Question for RPers

Aria Started Last reply 44 posts
So I was thinking about some other games I have played, some of their game mechanics and how I'd like to see some things in an MMO and that made me curious...

(Before I go any farther, let me say that I have no interest at all in RPing, I'm just curious about how you handle this, also, that I'm not trying to ask out of sarcasm or meanness or anything.)

How do you RP through mobs dropping items? In particular, non-humanoid type mobs dropping mobs? I was just thinking about it, like why would a wolf have charcoal? I mean where would he even carry it? Am I supposed to believe he swallowed it? Or a ghost, how would a ghost carry anything?

Seems to me wolves should have wolf pelts and bones, not money, recipes, silver nuggets or fist weapons.

Just curious. :)
A very good question.
As it stands, your description is how most other games work, and to find coal, charcoal etc you'd have to mine them. (e.g World of Warcraft)
In L2 however you could simply consider the fact that these animals can be found in their collective dens, nests what have you. These items end up in these regions through natural causes; fires, floods, mineral deposits.
In other cases some of the mobs are unnatural, made of stuff; Horrifying Canon Golem for instance yields Iron Ore.
Others could simply ingest or produce these items: Fafurion Henchmen giving Orichalcum.
But yeah L2 sucks donkey wang when it comes to RPing, as much as they claim to support the RP community.
I think part of the answer, Listof, at least for me, is that it sort of depends upon the style or approach of RP.

Some RPers consider themselves to be 'in character' at all times. On the opposite end of the spectrum, some only think of RP as a sort of situational occurrence that happens at times.

I don't and have never RP'd while hunting or sieging. I can imagine a story-line or situation where someone might. I've seen others do it. But I think those activities (and the others participating) deserve attention focused on what is supposed to be accomplished. Just my opinion though.

For me RP is almost like an event. So I'd say, "today at 4pm I'm going to manor on a low alt" and "at 6pm Clanmember X and I will meet in Gludin and continue a story line".

I suppose it's important to point out that many see RP as only done one way while others (and other clans and even alliances) are open to defining RP as nearly anything that involves adopting a characterization at any time in the game.

Most are better at it than I am and many, many players can easily become very absorbed in their characterization.

So I guess the answer to your question from my standpoint is "idk", cause I don't know why a wolf would be carrying charcoal or how that would work into an RP story line.
Lol--half the monsters appear to drop whatever (mat or pot) out of their backsides when they die. How you'd seriously work a dying mob pooping out a silver nugget into an RP session is beyond me!
Jokes aside, I could see how you'd have "to work at collecting mats for a new sword" in a general sense into the role playing--probably just not being detailed about why the mob might have it.

Generally, RP is pretty diverse though. It has a lot of forms and settings and is widely affected by the individual's interpretations and style.
Kama will come here at some point and post 3 sentences explaining it perfectly and making it all make sense :)
Wolves are dorf's slaves. They make them mine coal.
=O
Here's your explanation

wolf is born, wolf grows, wolf goes out into the world, wolf gets hungry and eats random stuff,

later wolf decides to go to a random area where alot wolves are at and walks around in a small area just waiting. player comes up kills wolf, wolf throws up random stuff he ate (+ some money he thought that was candy that he got when he attacked a child (which is why children never show up in L2) ) and player picks up random stuff that wolf spews.

And that my friends is how you get errr silver nuggets and money from a wolf.
lol
The mob drop tables were always something I had a little trouble with, as far as RP went.

However, I found that in terms of coins for wolves and the like, you could see it as a bounty reward for the pelts, almost like a non-coded quest. Things like iron ore, silver nuggets, and such...

Well, that's a bit harder, but I think I can still explain it away. A wolf (our "default" mob) is a creature of the wild, and one of its desires, even its genetic programming, is to find a mate. Who is to say that a wolf, like a bird, would not collect something shiny to appeal to a potential mate? That would explain coins, silver ore, etc.

Extrapolate this idea a little more to your non-humanoid mobs, and you start to come into the idea of RP-Based drops, though granted, it takes a lot of stretching the sense of imagination
you could perceive it as divine intervention, grace of the gods. :p
Except that the gods are withdrawn from the world, after Einhasad's little fit with the Giants.

Biology in l2 isnt the same as in rl.. Thus instead of kidney stones, the body produces all weird sorts of materials. And spiders just have a habit of making webs in the form of humanoid footwear.

This idea works well imho. As for ghosts or other types of creatures dropping odd things, you can say that perhaps the things they drop are items they gained by killing someone (or some thing). Like a wolf dropping a weapon or gold, you can safely assume it ate a dwarf and swallowed its weapon and gold pouch. :) (hey, sharks are the same way! they eat license plates for crying out loud, lol ^_^)

Oh, another idea along the line of ghosts and things..ghosts weren't always ghosts, typically. :) They were once some other creature or being, and perhaps the items they drop are a part of their belongings they once had...?

Sorry if I'm totally regurgitating something someone else said, I didn't take the time to read the whole thread. As backwards as it will be, I will read the rest of the posts here after I finish typing this. ^_^

Anyway, just some ideas. ^^

HAHA ;) nice....so true, but still ^_^
I don't know if many actually rp the random drop items in L2 - sometimes you have to overlook a games mechanics while rp'n.

Now, you can rp drops if you're scavenging for certain items such as EMI shafts, animal bones, thread, quest items, etc. You're hunting specific monsters for specific items - makes rp'n the drops a bit easier.

Since, in the lore of L2, all creatures were created via magic, magical herbs can be rp'd as a by-product upon their death.

Some mobs have a society to them such as lizardmen, orcs, bugbears, Mahums, etc. They have camps, barraks, weapons and armor so it's possible they can have loot and other items on them.

Some mobs it doesn't make sense (wolves, jags, eyes) so you have to over look the games mechanics.

I always thought that if a mob wields a certain weapon it should be able to drop that weapon or parts of it...same goes with armor, spellbooks can only come from magic using creatures, etc.
How do you RP mobs drops? It's very easy actually. If it is an alligator it ate a traveller and swallowed everything so you can expect to find anything. If it is a spider normally you find the stuff in the web, if it is a goblin it was hidden under a rock nearby, and so on you get the idea :)

The only limit is your imagination when you roleplay.
Just because things are in game, it doesn't mean that there's the need to RP it.

For example. I don't RP b10231gfgr killing lifelessly in a catacomb. I don't RP dwarf123 overpricing stuff in Giran. And I don't RP drops (Unless there's a good reason to. Like, for example, a mob dropping a piece of equipment. Or something "feasible", something they could be carrying on them, or something that can be integrated into the storyline). Rarely RP mobs, depending on where you're hunting. And most people I know rarely RP hunts.

If I have a character that has absolutely NO reason in character to go, let's say, to Enchanted Valley to hunt, yet that's the best spot for his level, why do I have to force that into the RP? You don't HAVE to be in character all the time, and especially you aren't forced to "create" solutions when hunting. You can just be there out-of-character. Simple as that.

That said, I had fun once trying to adapt spoiling into my little dorf's RP. She was young, and in her mind, it was a little magic she had that turned the inside of monsters into useful things. For another person I know, the spoiling was "pickpocketing" mobs. I know people that don't RP healing spells as spells, but more like healing abilities, meaning their Elders don't cast spells that immediately heal people, but use healing processes that will do that gradually. I don't like that, I prefer to think that there's magic in the Fantasy world, and my Elder can cast magic to enhance people's abilities and some minor healing, thanks to his connection to Shilen. It's all a matter of how YOU want to RP, there's no rules, and no forceful ways of thinking.

It's kind of a misconception to think that everyone in L2 RP's every single thing in the game.
On NWN servers the hardcore roleplayers RP absolutely everything, including quests, even repeatable ones.

Really rokeplaying drops is not the difficult part, the difficult part is for a paladin to explain why he opened a tomb and took items from it. :)

I suppose that if you roleplay a good character you would never kill a Gigant because they are envoys of the gods.
Some people in Korea program the mobs to drop random items.

Congratulations, you've explained the Out-Of-Character reason. This concludes our exercise of "How to not contribute to the thread" successfully.

Please remember to place your seat back and tray table in the upright position, to return the towels you took from the motel, and for the love of God, please put on your pants.
yeah what an [censored]
Sigh I can't wait to roleplay my Roleplayer taking 4% from Lionna characters repeatedly.
Like the OP, I have a question too and again, nothing bad is intended - I have done some RPing on Lionna too, I just haven't come across this situation.

How do you RP through PvP with someone who doesn't RP and speaks like 'your mum', 'm'er f'er', 'wtfpwnt', 'lawl' etc.? I think this will become a bigger problem moving to Kain.
at that point we drop the RP gloves and call the big boys.

some, however, have ways of incorporating actual pvp into stories. case in point the war between the light and the dark side.

it isnt merely a clan war for rep, or a war thats fought with tactics. the light doesnt go hunting the dark.... on purpose.

and IF it does, it doesnt bring a gun to a knife fight - the rp wars that have existed on lionna were not about siegeing, or tactics involving ganks. spies, maybe. but not a full party of A graders going to hunt wartags in C zones.

Should be fun.

Just think of it as a roleplayer griefing ebayers (lmao).

As said RP is something only limited by your fantasy, so you can decide for yourself what to RP and what not. Normally drops happen too fast to roleplay them during a hunt, even if they were sensible (which, as I agree, they often are not).
So the suggestion to just pick out remarkable drops and integrate them seems good to me.
As for roleplaying PvP I think the best way to do that is fan fiction. My clan has a bit of a L2 fan fiction culture and it's really amazing what great stories can be inspired by tough duels, even if you did not have time to write a single RP line while you had them. ;)

(about the Red Wedding: Was that hero guy you see SoEing in the end in league with the Zariche-dwarf? I just so hate traitors >.<)

In RP terms, they are just insults...no matter how it's typed you see it as an insult and you respond in your rp way.

Your mum = Yer mum tis vile scum of the earth!
wtf = You dare challange me?
lawl = Your nemisis is boastfully laughing at your lifeless body

Or whatever you want to come up with.

All throughout history slang was used, swearing, forbidden words and phrases used to provoke and invoke the ire of others. You just have to view those comments as their way to provoke or add insult.
