The melee DPS classes in this game are Gladiator, Tyrant, dagger classes, and to a (much) lesser extent, Destroyers. I once saw somebody describe Kamaels as battlemages, and I kinda like that description for them. (I personally don't really get excited about L2's interpretation of battlemages, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who love them.)
FYI, archers and nukers do quite well in L2, although archers aren't that great until C or B grade.

Hmmm, I don't know, I would say destroyers were a dps class. i was on my Destroyer subclass and someone asked me what class it was because (and I quote) "you hit really hard".
I tend to try and ignore Kamaels. They don't exist for me. It looks like they added characters from two different games into one. All the traditional races really mesh together well, but the Kamaels are done by an entirely different artistic direction.

See, and I *do* like the Kamael for exactly that same reason. :D
All the other races are pretty much standard fantasy fare, beautified to L2's stringent design philosophy of "if it's ugly, make it pretty, and if it's already pretty then just give it less clothing".
The Kamael, though, aren't even remotely typical, and to be quite honest, I'm impressed with Berserkers' DPS capability.
They're not what I expected at all from a light-armor melee class.
Ganted, the Arbalester and Soulbreaker have yet to really wow me overmuch...but to anyone who is looking to play a close-range DPS with a little more involvement than simply "click, whack, whack, click", I'd definitely recommend a zerker.
Completely dismissing an entire race's worth of options just because you disagree with their artistic direction is kind of silly, really.
It's not silly. It doesn't stick with the game. Lineage 2 was all about freedom, a nuker could wear Heavy armor if they wanted to, but it wasn't the best idea (an example).
Kamael brought in the whole idea of removing the freedom that once existed. Forcing them to wear Light Armor only (probably because they didn't want to bother with extra textures). Also changing preexisting weapons into specialized weapon types that essentially did the same thing.
Let's change that bow into a crossbow.
Lets change that sword into a Rapier.
Etc.
Also coming with them were the instance dungeons and class specific S80.
As for artistic style? I'm going to stick with my opinion. I also prefer the UI before Kamael, I still can't get used to it. The artistic changes aren't complimentary and seem more like they fit in Aion more than Lineage 2.
As for the Kamael classes? Arbalest is what the Archer classes should have been from the beginning. Using traps and snares, focusing damage and doing all that an Arbalest does best. Like a ranger.

Its not just an artistic change. Their weapons have a very different states from that it was converted. Kamaels not really powerfull class and arbalester plain sux against any archer class.
@everyone who fixed the list "even more": the OP said he wanted a close range or maybe ranged DPS class and you guys kept adding every class in this game.
so much for not confusing the new player

If you check it's only 1 class listed and it's close range.

lol I didn't read the OP's post lawls...my bad.
but sws + BD together make a nice PvE combo.
However I'd say that AW might be a better choice for PvE + PvP with that new chance stun they get *meh so jellious*.
so u post w/o even knowing wth ppl are talking about? nice. no wonder i know so many ppl who tried reading these boards and just find them confusing :)
everytime i wanna say smth i read from post 1 to the end, even if it's a 30 page thread, because 1. if i feel the need to say smth on the topic it means it's of interest to me and 2. someone might have already said what i'm about to post, and i HATE ppl who repeat what's already been said
