Phantom Summoner Noobie Questions

Dark Elf Classes Started Last reply 15 posts
Hi Guys/Gals,

I have a few questions that I have done some searching in the forums for, and asking in game, but have received various responses. So here I am.

I will be doing the class change to PS this weekend and my questions are:

1) what type of gear should I be aiming for? I've heard robes for faster casting/healing your servitor, but I've also heard leather. Whats typical? advantages disadvantages?

2)What type of weapon? This kind of goes back to question 1, I've heard melee weapons that swing fast to activate cubics as much as possible (such as duals or fists). but ive also heard mage weapons for better healing of pets etc.

3)What servitor do you typically solo with? which do you typically party with? which do you typically pvp with?

4)It sounds like the servitor will be spamming beast shots but do you typically also use SS? I read a guide that said SS were not even worth it because the servitor with beast shots still way out dmg'd the summoner. thoughts?

thanks in advance
if you use robes or light armor depends from situation, but mostly summoners use robes + mage weapon with acu, till 50lv you should be able to nuke mobs with mage equip on your own and if you choose good places to solo you will not need to put out summon at all, after 50+ youll see what summon is best for what situation on your own :)
the cubics will be activated as the summon hits target (was sm in last updates)
the best PS summoner is on 79lv
use robe + acumen weapon (karmian + homunculus e.g.) until you hit lvl 50. since then you exp fastest as a nuker. begin in ivory crater, later move out on formors and bugbears.

after 50 you can begin exping with you summon. your dmg is neglectable, so you dont need any other weapon than acumen weapon (you will be fine with Cgrade mysterious sword).
you have to heal your summon, the cubics fire constantly every 30 sec or so - it doesnt have to do anything with your atack speed anymore.

for solo exp take shadow, he has VR, you will have no problem keeping him alive also in catacomb, which you can do solo.
for party take soulles, it takes less xp from you and has higher dmg.

as for shots, you should buy pletny of beast shot and few blessed spirit shots for your better heals. you dont need any ss, it just useless to hit mobs, you dmg is very low.
1) With the new Gracia changes, you will want robes. In Gracia, the PS gets the death spike nuke and you will want enough MP to be able to use that when needed. Light armor used to be a viable option and still is if you want more Pdef, but I would go robes for the MP and mage benifits.

2) You can either be a semi fighter with Light armor (plated leather) and a weapon like a dagger or 2-sword, or you can get an acumen weapon. I would suggest an acumen weapon for healing and for nuking since the PS will have death spike and other spells to cast.

3) I always used to play with soulless because he took less XP from me and had the highest Patk of all the summons, but now, with the changes in Gracia, Nightshade may also be a good option to grind with because he will have pretty high Patk, but also a very strong defense. He can also heal you and hex/gloom your enemies. I usually PvP with Soulless for being offensive and Nightshade for supporting, but I think I will PvP with nightshade after the up-date.

4) I always spam shots, my shots and my servitor's shots.

Helpful tip: It is best to play as a nuker to lvl 52, your Dg nukes will still work just fine and you will have deathspike as well. I say this because summoners do not get very effective until they are 52 and can buff their serivtors with haste lvl 2.
1)Go with robes and Homu/Accu and nuke for much of C-grade. The XP will probably come faster since you will not have Shadow taking 30% of everything you earn. I played summoner from day 1 as a summoner and I’m sure it took me longer to get through C-Grade because of it. You can play it as at true summoner as I did, but it is a little more difficult until you get Haste 2. I simply love the summoner playstyle and hated having to nuke from 1-40.

2)Weapons…hmmm. This is where the debate heats up a little. I always preferred robes/accu over light/dd, but I have recently changed my tune. I always bought into the “summoner doesn’t do much damage anyway” argument, but the fact is your damage will indeed add up over time. As an example, at level 61 I use +4 TSU/SLS duels and Majestic Light. On single HP mobs I do anywhere from 80-150 per swing with those duels spamming shots. I attack the mob first and take agro. I send in Soulless who takes agro after 1-3 swings and use Corpse Life Drain when the mob is dead. CLD heals for about 300 HP and uses only 15 MP, and since you took some of the damage you didn’t have to use a servitor heal which takes about 100 MP at my level. If you use this method where herb pots drop, it’s even easier and you really never run into MP problems. On multi HP mobs such as catacombs or Giant’s Cave I still use Shadow. I let him do most of the work here since he has VR. I get behind the mobs and with the crit duels I use, the damage really adds up fast. In that situation I can crit for up to 300 per swing with those duels. Hardly chump change over the course of time. In high A-Grade, a switch back to robes/accu may be in order, but I cannot speak to that personally.

3)Soulless=single HP mobs especially if herbs drop. Shadow=multi-HP mobs. Nightshade=parties that need a healer of some sort. PVP I can’t help you much there. I’m quite inconsequential in PVP at my level.

4)Shots….In B&C-Grade I didn’t use soul shots since I used a mage weapon. In A-Grade with duels I do spam them. As mentioned above I feel that my damage warrants their use. Beast Shots are a constant and must be spammed in my opinion. Food for thought…I feel that by spamming shots I use my cubics less on multi-HP mobs which saves some money on crystal use. Also top C-Grade weapon will use 3 shots per swing while (I believe) all weapons in B-Grade only use 1 shot, again something to consider depending on your budget.
1) As most people have said nuke till 50ish with your low level nuke , i'd say 48 is probably where you start failing too much for it to be convenient but next update you can use death spike which is half powered but won't fail as much. Honestly though you're going to be 3-4 shotting the same mobs a nuker would 1-2 shot. I actually recommend light armor and a fighter weapon for leveling till you get to A grade or so.

2) cubics no longer care about how often you hit so that doesn't matter. If you don't hvae a -str tat you will actually do decent damage, not like your pet but you'll notice a kill speed difference if you don't help. I prefer to level with a fighter weapon and my acu weapons are for PVP and such.

3)Shadow, his passive VR makes him invincible. If you're hunting some place with herbs or if youhave VR/ healing from some source then use soulless he hits much harder but lacks the VR. he currently has a nasty debuff that drains your mp but that'll be gone next update.

4) I did some calculations and found that witha decent fighter weapon and no - str i was doing about 20% of the damage if i used shots. So yeah you'll see a leveling difference if you use them. Honestly though i don't use them, mostly because i now have -str tats for pvp but honestly it wasn't a big enough difference for me to want to pay for the shots.
Funny. I dont pvp, but i also went with -str tats. To be able to carry more soulshots tho. And the buffers I bring along have same tats to carry even more soulshots.

Beast soulshots that is...
compressed shots are super light.

I'm level 61 right now on my PS sub hunting in Devotion. I've got 72 SE buffs and use potions for haste2/acumen3. I use either BWLA or PL with Tsu*Tsu+10 and have STR+4, WIT+4, INT+4 tats. With this setup, I do almost as much damage as the Soulless (maybe 40% of total damage). When using PL I also generally use TP if I pull more than 2 mobs; otherwise it is still not needed. I should be able to level to 66 in this fashion, but after that not sure what I'll do.

Does anyone have any experience using NM light or Tallum Heavy? I figure I could switch between BWLA and another armor set if I need the cast speed. So far, it just doesn't seem like any of the A grade armors offer much improvement in kill speed for PvE over BWLA or PL.

Weight is a problem, even though I stow shots on my SE. I use compressed beast shots, but haven't tried using compressed B shots. It's a hassle to find a craft shop for those.
Tallum Heavy?

you can't wear heavy
The only class that is forbidden heavy armor, to my knowledge, is Kamael. I'm sure I can wear it; the issue will be that cast speed is super slow. Since I hunt exclusively by melee I was curious if anyone had ever tried it out. I'll probably try it just to see as I have it for my Destroyer anyway.

Your fighting speed is super slow also in heavy.

If your hunt Exclusively melle then Heavy is no way the answer.

You will have more Attack speed in "any" Light armor then Tallum.

I recommend +6 Blue wolf Light set (better casting speed you get nukes with the next update and better P defense then any A grade Light armor) if you have the money or NM light if you don't.

Your gimp so much in heavy you might as well be forbidden.
