Magical Damage Variance and Weapons

General Discussion Started Last reply 19 posts
I've looked, but can't find anything definitive about how weapons affect the magic damage range. I've heard it depends on the class of weapon (e.g., sword, blunt, etc.). Can anyone confirm this. as well as how it get affected (e.g., swords have the most/least variance, etc.)?

Thanks, and sorry if this has already been answered, but I really couldn't find anything definitive, and the notes are vague.
I think its the same as for melee, sword have a small deviation, blunts havea large deviation. Seems to hold true too, was hitting the same mob for 1600-2200ish with a blunt and another type of mob for 1600-2000ish with a sword

not done any extensive testing though.
WTB S grade Mage Sword.... uuhhh
Weapons don't effect magic damamge range. THe range nerf was for bows and not magic skills. The only thing that efffect the range of magic damage is the skill range itself and the enviroment ie..walls hills ect.
grade of wepon might effect the range of dmg but not type such as swrod/blunt not not sure about it

When I said magical damage range...I mean the following from the Gracia notes:

Changes to Magic Damage Skills

Magic damage is no longer a static value.
The range of possible magic damage depends on the type of weapon being used.

Does anyone know how the type of weapon being used affects the range of possible magical damage?

Thanks.

I apologize if that note is confusing. I couldn't think of any better way to word it. The word "range" is not referring to distance; rather, it's referring to the range of possible damage you can hit your target for, for instance from 1 to 100 (these are just numbers I'm tossing out there). This note is indicating that this value was once static, and now it is not and is determined by the weapon you have equipped. Does that make sense?
Indeed it does. Thanks

So... Basically, anyone trying to nuke with a rapier is wasting BSS?
Now here is a question. I'm using an A grade Blunt on my Warcrier, and call me crazy, but it seems like his health drains and CC skill's aren't working as well anymore. Is this connected to what was changed?

With a +8 homoc, i was able to sleep and drain 70-75 mobs pretty consistently. I didn't notice a difference when i switched to the Spiritual Eye until after the update. The M Attacks are virtually the same.
Which A grade blunt? I ask this because I suspect that non mage weapons, regardless of Matk, are going to do less damage than a mage weapon. Call me crazy but NC soft can be sneaky.
Spiritual Eye. I don't know who else is going to use it aside from orcs, so it better not be nerfing drains. I guess I'm going to have to test it on white mobs and see how it does.

I just got the **** thing too.
Well that is certainly a mage type weapon, there should be no problem there.
Maybe i was just having a bad run. I'll take the Homoc out again and do some tests tonight.

I understood your note the first time :D But thank you for clarifying.

Unfortuantely, no one still seems to know how exactly weapon type affects the range of possible damage. Or even if it's by weapon type or if it's on a weapon by weapon basis.

I'm hoping magic blunts do the most consistent damage (i.e., the least variance) since I've always considered blunts to be the classic mage weapon (wands, staves, etc), not to mention I own one :p

Oh well, if anyone knows, please post. Thanks.
I'm with gb, I understood - it was plain English and I guess people just read what they want to read.

Earlier today I went to VoS on my Necro, +9 Homu & Avadon with newbie buffs. Not a single problem.

Yes, I hit low damage a few times, but I've played there for months and months and I know how to recover from a failed attack.. I just have to do it more often now. I've noticed that failed attacks aren't always 1 now.. I've had 3, 4, 20, 60.. and so on.

Managed to get 10% in a few minutes with V4... I'm soooo loving this Vitality...
personally, i kinda hate the variance now. Mobs that were a sure 2 shot, 50-55% of mob hp killed with each nuke, now if you're unlucky can become 3 shot mobs(magic failures aside.) I miss static amounts :(
as for the ranges in damage, just as melee weapons, swords have a smaller range, blunts have larger range.
don't worry, there IS an S grade magic sword. too bad it's S80 though :)
both are
