my my ! ive heard alot bout em great wolves and fenrirs,
so is it really worth havin one of em around?
i mean do they do any close to decent dmg or are they just for the
looks (and well im talkin bout pp buffed wolves!)
my second question would be if its hard to exp a wolf till 55 or 70
in a duo with a 42 th?:o
or well lets put it in general terms :
how long would it usually take to get a wolf into the 55ish or 70ish lvls?
does the wolf need the best wolf gear to pwn or should i just put him behind me and let him leech?:o
Wolves do good damage from L15 to L54. For those levels however, their pdef and hp is very weak even with top armor. Thus it makes a good assist but requires some care to prevent it from dying a lot. You could just let it leech, but then what is the point of having one at all? It will cost about ~4m to get the top wolf armor and weapon. And an extra 6M if you get the top pet jewelry...I haven't yet bought any yet since the update went live, but it's in the planning...I just am not fighting any magic using mobs with it at this time.
From L55 (when you can evolve the wolf) it becomes a Black hair wolf. At this point the pdef and HP of the pet becomes much more manageable, but the Patk goes up significantly. And it starts gaining skills every 5 levels. (You can eventually ride it as well.) The gear for a black hair wolf gets extremely expensive at this point. (Like ~90M for the top weapon alone.)
To illustrate, at C grade, a equal level wolf will have a patk roughly the same as a warrior class with a 1H weapon. (Sword/blunt) Mobs at the same level will 2-4 hit kill it though.
At L57, with only about 25M in gear, my wolf has 1K patk...my L59 Destroyer with BW Heavy and a Great sword...only about 600 ish....and it would regularily take aggro from me.
So yeah, you could just have the wolf leech to level it...but why if your not going to use it? The damage it can do does justify the cost of using it, assuming you have enough cash to 'start it up'. I used mine to grind w/o shots to pay for itself and helping gear myself up as well. Starting waaaaaay back in like in like chronicle 1 or early 2, when using a wolf was really, really rare. (And hard!)
If you decide to raise one, be sure to buy some blessed pet rez scrolls. They're fairly cheap and are purchasable from priest of dawn with ancient adena.
As for the jewelry, boy does it make a difference. My 54 wolf has 148 m.def without jewelry, 320 m.def with top jewelry. It doesn't get slept 100% of the time in apostate now :)
I agree, the jewelry makes a big difference. As far as Yatta7's advice tp get Blessed pet rez scrolls: I checked the price well over a year ago, and they are pricey. So I stuck to regular rez scrolls. By and large, I learned to be careful and to hunt in places where the wold was not in too much danger. Every once in a while I would have a bad hair day before my wolf got to 55, and it would die a couple of times. What I found was, the wolf leveling curves are such that the wolf will recover his XP loss, reletive to the player, over a few days. If you've got a lot of money and you can afford the blessed pet rez scrolls, go ahead. Otherwise, check the price first, and consider my own experience, for what it's worth.
ty for the input so far! especially painamplifier!
meh im most likely goin to get a wolf :P
sounds cool but the expensive gear will be a prob! but meh! ill let
the wolf leech for now:)
and wow ...nice patk on the black wolf with pp buffs rofl.
hehe,i hope the expin of it ll go quickly but itll be like that,i guess.
and pets are aswell cool for the looks so yay<333
The blessed pet rez scrolls only cost about 20k. Not cheap to a new player, but they're definitely not expensive.
Useful to know, and you hit the nail on the head.
Blessed scrolls of resurection for pets are dropped by Ghouls, among other mobs.
So when you're a newbie and have a pet, be sure to farm these, everybody spends some time in EG anyway!
besides scrolls, make sure you have enough food for the wolf. I have seen so many people asking why their pets disappeared - most replied they just started seeing the pet ran terribly slow and less than 20 minutes later the pet went poof!
if the pet is getting hungry, it will become slow. if you forgot to feed it and let the hunger gauge reached 0, it will leave you. (the 24 hours thingy on the patch note on resurrecting the pet only applies to pet that is killed in battle, not hunger)
Getting to 55 shouldn't be too difficult, especially with the vitality system. But getting to 70 is definitely more of a grind...but I guess this game depends alot on how much you grind anyhow. I have a quite a few toons in mid/low A-grade, so I'm able to hop it from toon to toon to maximize vitality. It's taken me about 3 weeks to get from 55 to 69, and it should be 70 in the next day or two (can't wait :)). I generally cycle it between 3-6 toons/day depending on how much grinding I can fit into my schedule.
Even as a great wolf, it's still fragile. With my Paladin and BD, I'm able to hold aggro with the group mobs at Fields of Massacre or in the Catas w/out problem. With my Tyrant, it's a little dicier, but doable. With my nukers and archer, I just let the wolf clean up if I can't one or two shot the mob, or else I just let it leech. Try to avoid AOE attacks/stunners.
As for gear, try to look at your map and see if any castle/towns ever have the tax rate set to 1% ... it makes a HUGE difference in prices (but top gear will still set you back a pretty penny even if you are saving 15M). It's a long shot, but you should have some time before you evolve it. Buying top gear outright, I think, is a lot cheaper than upgrading from bottom to top.
is it possible to see damage to wolf
in the chat window? sometimes I park him
and don't see that he's being hit. having the
damage come up in the chat box would help
me a lot.
since mine is parked most of the time,
i don't bother with gear yet. he hasn't died yet, but
to each his own. I totally agree with goldenbear,
look for the cheapest tax rate, it can really save you alot.
At the moment I have my wolf at lvl 42 (almost lvl 43), he is definately worth it... He may not have the BEST gear but he is doin' ok with what I got him, and he is a fantastic Assist on the catacombs.
Most of (if not all) of the advice given here I do myself.
Just a side note for when your wolf gets high enough...
The "skin" of your wolf (i.e., the armor and weapon) appears on the wolf as it levels and is not dependent on its gear. So at 55, the wolf will always appear naked. At 60, it gets a sort of padded leather armor; 65 looks like half-plate, and 70 is full plate. It looks like that regardless of what you do or don't have equipped.
I dunno about anyone else, but I was a definitely disappointed when I equipped the armor/weapon on my 58 wolf and it's appearance didn't change
