Returning user: first bunch of levels go too fast!

General Discussion Started Last reply 40 posts
Is there any way to slow down 1-20? I feel like these first few levels go by way too quickly. There's not enough time to explore this portion of the game anymore. The L2 I remember took 100 times longer. The herbs and the newbie buffs are easy to avoid, but vitality is inescapable early on. And what's with that quest in the Kamael village that gives you a set of wooden armor for barely any work? This makes a whole bunch of other quests pretty much obsolete because they're so completely overshadowed by this easy quest -- and this is aesthetically hideous, because I'm the kind of player that likes to do all the quests out there. The early game is just not long enough to appreciate it anymore. Is this a common complaint or am I just nuts? Are there any rumored plans to at least implement the option to turn vitality off?

I figured I'd come back to the game because the bot problem seems to have diminished to a bearable level, but the game itself (at least the first bunch of levels) is not enjoyable for me now because it goes so freaking fast. What's up with that?!

LOL You won't be saying it's "freaking fast" after level 76.

And no, yours is not a common complaint. The common complaint for four years has been: "it takes to long to level up! This game has too much grind!" etc.

The player base is high level now, so if they had not made these changes then new players coming into the game would NEVER have a chance to catch up. Even now, they don't have much chance to catch up, unless they cheat (or play 10+ hours a day, every day.)

Also, most newbie towns have been deserted for years. Even before all the bonuses to low levels, players would powerlevel their way through the first 20 levels. I used to do it in 2 hours. So new players who weren't able to powerlevel would come in and never see a soul. This new system gets them out of the newbie towns and into populated areas faster.

Although I think you're crazy for not wanting vitality, I do wish they'd do something with the starter areas, like add higher level dungeons or mobs there so we'd have a reason to go back. I love the LEV area. And there's all these areas of the game that new players will never even see now, because they aren't even required to xp much to hit 20 and don't even have to run places anymore cuz they can teleport to any town/hunting spot for free. It is kind of a shame.

If you don't want to level up so fast, don't do the quests. As far as vitality goes, I don't really think it'd work but maybe if you leveled up to 6 or something (high enough for some mobs to turn blue) and whacked on them for a while (a long while), you could loose your vitality.
Your not alone...I feel the same way. And a friend I got to play the game recently (less than a year ago) even said the same thing to me when we were discussing the new vitality system.

In fact, NC might as well just have everyone start at L52, because it doesn't take long for them to hit A grade at these rates.

It's sad, but B grade is the new 'NG', and A grade is the new 'D' Grade. S is 'C' and the two S80's are now B and A respectively. Although the whole 'NG' grind is still gone, now you got that 'D' grade hump at the new Lux shop to get over much like everyone used to grind like mad to afford top D in Giran. (If you were a 'new' player) Although common items 'ease' the steep spike at the B/A levels much like clan oath and shadow/adventurer items used to help lower levels.

NC could (and probably will!) just cut out entire sections of the game in the future...what is the point of places like cave of trials, mithril mines or even the ant nest anymore? Other than a few quests...half of which you aren't required to 'do' anymore or the 1-2 raid/boss mobs there...the mobs are redundant now. A bit of quests and some Kamaloka a day, and you can be L52 without hardly killing anything.

In short, there is no captain behind the wheel of this ship anymore. All we have is a bunch of Gilligans running to and fro trying to make the passengers happy while the ship careens aimlessly through the sea. Sure, a lot of this can be laid at the level treadmill school of bad design...but then again many players seem to be mindlessly stuck in that mindset, as well as the game designers and they re-inforce each others bad habits most the time.

Until something better comes along, I'm just going to stand on deck and serenade the rising waves with the rest of the band. /Titanic

I couldn't agree more with the idea of adding high level content to the low level starting towns. And I believe Sovrath was the first to suggest doing this years ago, not that it has ever actually been implemented outside of a few bland catacombs in C3.

The other problem with the starting zones asdie from no players being there, particularly the light elf zone, is that the amount of mobs was greatly decreased either in C3 or C4 to increase the number of mobs elsewhere (in the catacombs?).
we need more places for 80+ and with mobs like IOP has.
no we need more content for 40 - 62 ;)
I 100% agree with Kama. Most of my toons are 50 +/- 10 levels. Why? Because I get bored of 20 levels of the same shite. There is little variation and nothing worth while farming.

I can get a toon to 50 in a month or so, once it's there, it takes months to get to 60 (godda love the 50-53 xp wall), on the same mob every day.

I want to be useful to the clan, and help them out in their ToI and Varka rubbish.. but I can't. All I can do is pole in the rift, hoping that one day, I too will be A-Grade.

Can you believe that? I've played [on Sayha] since C4 and I still don't have an A-Grade toon. I'm a casual player and doing the same thing for 20 levels isn't for me. So I just keep re-rolling. My Paladin will change that though... roll on A-Grade!!
why restrict it to that range, we need better quests, better spoil tables, and more backstory. Doubt we will live to see it, but thats my 2 cents. (also before any of my previous suggestsions WE NEED SOME FORM OF BOT PREVENTION)
Let's not derail another thread with the 3 letter swearword.
lol sorry :P
Yeah, the lack of players in starter towns surprisingly doesn't bother me a whole lot. I'm okay with just soloing through the first part of it.

I guess what I'm gonna do is go ahead and figure out exactly which quests are "obsolete," and only do the few that are actually worth doing. I'll start a new character to not get the ridiculous newbie benefits my original guy gets. And I guess I won't be killing nearly as many monsters early on, to give me more time to explore and figure out which monsters are what level and all. And I'll make sure to never save in towns to keep vitality to a minimum. I just haven't had enough of the newbie experience to move through it so quickly yet, and there's so much stuff out there! It used to take long enough for you to actually develop a distinct feeling about each of the places because you've been there so many times. I loved that. =(

I guess I'll just experiment for a while and give it another chance. All the other MMO's are even less appealing to me for various reasons.
If your going to do the quests that are only worth doing you will be at level 19 in 4 quests, less than 1 hour. If you want to level slow don't do any quests lol. If you want the benifit of the armor and soulshots and buffs you need to do these quests though:

Start at Kamael village and do the quest called "Supply check" at guard Marcela (i think) at south gate entrance. That will take you to lvl 5 and gives you a complete armor set - speak to newbie guide there and it takes you to lvl 6.

After that quest go to your own starter village and speak to the newbie guide.
Get your shadow weapon and speak to him again and he will tell you the next task to do. When you finish that task speak to him again for your next.

There is a total of 2-3 quests (after the armor one) that will get you to lvl 18. You can start class change quest at 18 which takes you to 20+ when you finish.

Thats it - 3 - 4 quests, no exping and you get to 20.

I guess what I'm gonna do is go ahead and figure out exactly which quests are "obsolete," and only do the few that are actually worth doing.

Just follow the advice of the Newbie Guide NPC, and you will be lvl20 in a hour max. Then find a clan to join the academy.
I think if 0-20 (even 40) goes too fast, there's NO NEED in low "D" and low "C" gear (and OMG in low NG gear). I think: /delete low Ng-C grade gear and keep only Top one.

Bad Idea.......Pkers need something to wear and Wood Set is the one they prefer.

Devotion for mages is also the best No Grad and it's not even top. ;)

Clan Oath is the best Looking D grade armor and it's not top.

PL is the best C grade armor for any Fighter and a few mages and it's not top. :p
Ashley, what's the differnece?? A pker can wear Carmian (ok keep low "C" grade) or TOP "D". It is NOT that expensive, common.....

I'll start a new character to not get the ridiculous newbie benefits my original guy gets. And I guess I won't be killing nearly as many monsters early on, to give me more time to explore and figure out which monsters are what level and all.

You do realize, I hope, that all this information is completely useless in the long term, because you will spend infinitely more time doing other things in the game than running in newbie village areas.

If you want to do it for fun, by all means go ahead. If you want to do it to get a distinctive feeling of the areas, IMO it's a waste of time because you won't have to see them again.

And I'll make sure to never save in towns to keep vitality to a minimum.

I think this does not matter, only time logged off does.
imo the game has been become much less hardcore for every new patch and thats sad ur right! but also remember how much content they have added for end game. ive been in game since OB and quitted/started a couple of times. last time i started, was with the new vitality system and i must say i enjoy it. with this i can experience end game instead of getting stucked lv60-75 as allways. l2 has so much more to offer at 75+ now, that you really shouldnt hang around newbie towns more than required!
Oh Comeon people it's a 4 year old game who cares about content that's been there for 4 years. Yes in prelude it took us a month to get to first class change , ok yes in prelude we did SODA parties and laughed but things move on. The bulk of the playerbase is not ng/d/c/b any more and all ncsoft is doing is giving newer players a nudge to move them closer to old players. Just enjoy, if you want to grind wait till you get 79+ and you ll regret you ever wanted it in the first place :)
I completely agree with Edisson. But.. well there are plenty of b graders, cause people like to mess around on their subs.
It does suck that there is nothing to keep people in newbie towns because they are so wonderfully developed, but think of this, the quests given to you by the newbi guide make you go ALL over your races noob territory, so you do get to see it all, even if its just a breif glimps. I've had clannies and known people who recruit friends and would lose them because "its to hard to grind" in the low lvls. They couldnt play with their friends so they didnt want to play at all.
Even though there are all these new boosts to noobs, no one is twisting your arm to use them. Sure you cant avoid vitality but you arent forced to follow the nooby quests. I actually have told a lot of people "go do the nooby quests" because they were new and didnt have enough adena for gear, or couldnt lvl fast enough. Think of the new lvling system as more of a personal choice.

And Purp, pm me on sayha and i will p lvl the crap outta you. I'm a HE with a Boxed prophet, and im lvling the fastest i have ever!! But i love to bring company along!

... but the game itself (at least the first bunch of levels) is not enjoyable for me now because it goes so freaking fast. What's up with that?!

Actually he has an extremely good point.

NC really botched this one in my opinion.

Instead of making it so that all the level ranges had more meaning they decide to zip everyone through.

So now look at your map. Most of the world is supporting low lvl areas which will be zipped through extremely quickly.

Essentially there is no lower lvl game anymore.

Of course people will say "but yeah, everyone is higher lvl". Well, in a game that is based on levels I don't think this is a bad thing IF the lower lvl to mid lvl gameplay is interesting and can have some sort of application to the larger world.

Quite frankly, they would have been better off with a small tutorial and then jumping you up to C grade and revamping the lower lvl areas to support that.

Because quite frankly they have pretty much tacitly admitted that there is no reason for the lower lvls.

And to continue this train of thought, what really has happened is that the devs came up with a system that really wasn't thought through completely.

What did they think was going to happen 4-5 years into the game? A game that requires a great amount of time for both leveling and economy!

It's almost like governments saying "no worries about trash... we'll just bury it!".

Only to find out that at some point there is no place to go.
I made a map of places that should be deleted (or entirely reworked for end game content) from the game. I left 1 starter town... everybody can start there. Some quests would have to be reworked, but whatever. The places crosed out are just completely dead anyway. Just remove them.

The area under GC should prolly stay, but besides that the map is pretty close to exactly what should be removed. I left all of the 'new elmore' because i really don't know what it's like.

Map: http://img266.imageshack.us/my.php?image=deleteareaskg9.jpg
I see that you deleted few places where I leveled my toons. :) And others level there too.

I don't agree with your deletings. So what if the started towns are deserted when the game is almost 5 years old? But to remove the starter villages? That's just not right!
Only problem I'm having with the "leveling to fast" is the money issue. Constantly at 4vit bars, spamming shots is just not economically smart. Especially when its taking 3x a swing..ugh

I am with my duo just hunting and I get accused of botting cause I am not using shots. Since when saving money was a bot thing to do?
change duo, or level solo without shots ;)

I don't think anyone has a problem with an older game having fewer players in the starter areas. However, given the rate of lower level advancement, it seems that you pretty much just breeze through.

I imagine it's almost as quick for the 20's which seems to disenfranchise ROA and ROD.

Not to mention the wastes.
some of those deletions were harsh

I xp to this day (on alts) at cemetary, Giants cave, Forgotten gateway, Dragon valley, plains of lizardmen, CT swamp

Elven ruins, abandoned camp, and abandoned coal mines should be historical monuments to the lineage of old. They ruined CT when they put in that level max cap.

in my opinion, places that can be changed/reworked for not being used....Forgotten Temple, Devils Isle, Sea of spores, and SODA. I think this will actually mix a couple High lvl areas into lower lvl areas to gain more traffic to the lower towns. And greater use of the entire map.

I agree, quite frankly I don't like the design idea of one area for one level range.

I think it would be very cool to have high level content mixed in with the lower lvl areas. Not that it's something that a player can run into that he'd have no chance, but something that the player could explore and take a chance.

An added lost sub level to SODA for example for high level players.

Same thing with Cruma. etc.
It seems to me that NC has decided to push the game in a different direction from what it used to be. As the updates go on they seem to continually prop up the base that have built. Also they are pushing any new people into that base as fast as possible. All the wile making the game more and more solo friendly. Even if they artificially created more traffic through the newbie villages I think people would still feel the same because at the root NC is making an effort to push you past that part of the game. I only play sporadically and from where I sit it's pretty clear to me NC is changing the basics of what L2 started as. Hind sight being 20/20 I can't help thinking that they are somewhat victims of their own policies though. It seems they feel they have to push people to the more active part of the game ASAP instead of addressing the issues that have made the low / mid level parts of the game unappealing for many folks. I still find L2 the most enjoyable MMO out there. I do also think they could have held more true to their original vision of the game if they had done a better job implementing it. So now things have changed. The core of the game is changing. Its a bit sad but not necessarily bad.

Its still a fun game... once you pay your dues. lol.

I just leveld my sub a lot of levels in cemetary. For no other reason than I had Clan hall port to it. I'm not saying that the areas never get used, but that there are plenty of other places, and they are redundant.

There is not a need for the areas that I deleted. Sure it is fun to occasionaly go back to soda and run through and feel all strong, but it is not necessary for game play,

The smaller the world is the better the world is.
can...can i say something. i've been reading for the pass hour and a half now. one thought always lingers in mind. don't the higher levelers want more friends to play with? if us lowbies make ways fast up to your level you'll get a new friend. or or perhaps even better. but what can be better than a friend right? an extra enemy for starters. eh eh?? just don't tell me you by any chance are weiry about a lil extra competitiveness are you? anyways, that is all i want to add for now.

ps,

i still think the adding of higher level content to the lower level areas is not such a fine idea. one being that the returning higher level players will kick the crapp out of the populating lil men :)
you are quite correct. new friends are always great. just a few problems this poses:

1: you really never can be sure this friend is not a spy of your enemies, or someone just trying to get to your soft spot so they can scam gear.

2: new enemies in L2 are never welcome. people dont respect wartagged players. never. if you dont believe this, have a look at Sayha, or definitely Phoenix. theres no respect for enemies. no mutually beneficial pvp, no fun, fair friendly fighting.

it just doesnt happen. either you "own" the server, or youre seen as a "scrub" (i'll leave the definition of the quoted items to you, quite frankly i cant figure out what either of them means)

3: new friends are really not wanted either. this is evidenced by the number of boxed buffers, dancers, and healers by the masses. youve seen it likely on more than one occasion and felt kinda left out. well, it has always been said that Solo exp >>>>>>>>>>> grouped.

completely true. adding more people to your grind means also you'd have to stop botting. so frankly these high level alliances wouldnt welcome a new friend unless he had his own buffers, his own gear, and his own levelling area.

all this being said, yes new friends are good things. the trouble is, when you get down to the nitty gritty of L2 new friends are not useful and not welcome.

Lol.

You have no idea about how wars really happen on Phoenix. Don't trust the forum trashtalk, it's produced by people with little (if any) brain.
but that's just wrong. so what you're trying to say is basically that you're trapped inside your little world, playing with the same people and you like it

but that's just wrong. so what you're trying to say is basically that you're trapped inside your little world, playing with the same people and you like it

well, thats the catch. these people that ARE in that world DONT like it. but they WONT have it change. its too risky.

those of us that stick to pve and nevermind warring the server really dont have a lot of problem making and forming groups or having fun with pvp cause we pvp ourselves in arenas.

its really quite exhillarating to find your own clannies strengths and weaknesses, and not not get into trash talk wars over minor occurrances like "2 vs 9 pve gank lol" or "we caught you botting in {place} and killed your guy 1000000000000 times."

it just doesnt happen. its the power of a 1way war, man. let them go red, they seldom come back.

and yes before you ask we do have 1 way wars with a few clans. we wont fight them. we dont get trouble.

well apart from chance pk's, but those are brezzed anyway.

Let's not derail another thread with the 3 letter swearword.

Well for bot sakes. I can't botting believe that we're going to botting well bot up another botting thread to the botting dirtiest botting word ever. BOT!
let's get back to the leveling thing here for a second. the plaintif is saying that leveling has become too fast and too furious. i remember a game that've undergone such change. for the most part about such game i've enjoyed the new while at the same time appreciate what the old had to offer. but that just me. yet, this is a forever changing(morping) game that changes has to be for the better. dispite the fact whether you think it's bad or not it may be made to be though of as that way.
i remember when people used to scam for gears and people who'd join your academy just for the armor, ect. but all that is a thing of the past now and i'm looking forward to an even brighter future. now we can put our worries aside from the gears and focus on more important things.
