Don't talk to wow-players. That's admitting they exist :(
They exist.. but.. LoL.. are they sad or what?
ofc WoW players know Everything, and they dont know about L2, so logically, L2 doesnt exist...but i bet none of them knows what 923 means...cuz they just n00b ^^

WoW was not the first successful MMORPG. EverQuest was, and it's still rolling (just got another expansion, or maybe soon it releases) almost 10 years later.

They're setting a record for Longevity. I think it's the oldest [true] MMO on the market with a factorable playerbase in the NA region.

WoW is successful because it's easy and the adequate game for rerollers and altaholics (faster you level, the more you can reroll).

Spoken like another biased player who's defending the MMO he started with.
For first successful MMORPG + longevity, try Ultima Online. Sure now there's not a lot of player in comparison to today figures. But UO was first there, and opened the market with up to 250,000 players and they set the rules of monthly fees + regular updates. EQ smashed UO and brought a new dimension for MMOs. Players by millions, and time sinking online activities.

But UO is still alive, with a monthly fee at the height of top dogs of the market, expansions you must buy and an online shop. Why would EA close it if there's still players to rob. :)

PS: There's still more players in UO than in a lot of MMORPGs. (Around 100,000)
Diablo! Oh.. and NWN!
Diablo is not a MMO, and NWN, even considering the persistent servers, is recent (2002).
Yup I remember going from text based MUDDs to Ultima Online, was the awesome.

Link to the wow freak thread?
Uhh crybabies from easy WOW unite in AION! Once it hits ... and once hard conditioned L2 players hit AION ... well, L2 was a tough school.
I enjoyed the year I played WoW....but yes too many jerks there....I ll be back when the expansion hits prolly :)...killing jerks is fun XD
OMG..even the new expension release comes on the TV NEWS!!!! -_-' I mean...wtf?!?!?! WHERE IS LineageII?!??!?! That makes me always angry!!!!

Well, I think that's because a lot of average people play the game. I don't mean that in a derogatory way but for example, the woman in our marketing/sales department, a family I know, etc.

WoW has allowed your basic, everyday non-gaming person to experience what online games can offer. For those who really like it they will stay and for those who like the concept but want something more challenging they will go looking around the market.

And as far as Aion goes, I'm afraid the L2 forged players who play the game are going to find that it is quite easy as compared to L2.
Doesnt L2 have more subscribers ( around 14mil) than WoW (around 10mil) ? So how WoW is the most sucessful and the "one at only" in the mmorpg genre if L2 beats it in many ways? Why Blizzard is claiming to be the best if they arent?

Well, I know there is a debate as to how WoW defines its subscribers, but L2 does not have 14 million subscribers. If they did that would be a HUGE jump from a few quarterly reports ago.

Oh yes, they are extremely popular in Asian but it's not 14 million current subscribers.

Their latest quarterly report was published so when I get a chance I'll look up the numbers.

I think you are referring to that little marketing blurb that was recently put on one of the boxes.

That was a 14 million have "tried" L2 thing.
Text based MMO (MUDs) were awesome. I wish modern MMO would pay attention to how much fun and rewarding the MUDs were for quests.

Anyone that remembers Genesis or PaderMUD or AfterHours knows what I mean.
WoW is easy, and you have a constant feeling of achievement (or well mini achievements) ... thats what gets and keeps the masses hooked to it... Lineage is more for the hardcore player that don't need/want instant reward...is a game for the patient...and you know...most people is not patient
Well if L2 doesnt have that subscribers than WoW doesnt have 10mil neigther. In my opinion WoW is more played because they make some good marketing and L2 doesnt...i dont know why..but well..nevermind.

Here (http://www.ncsoft.net/global/ir/quarterly.aspx) is a link to the quarterly report.

It's not pasting well so you guys can just check it out.

Total monthly access to L2 servers: 857 531.
407 346 of them on servers in Korea.
63 674 in US+Europe.
MUDs lol...way before the age of graphics!

Well that depends on how they count their subs.

I will say that since blizzard is part of (EA?) that they are publicly traded and therefore there should be a listing of subscription numbers.
Yes, but there are still different numbers for "concurrent players online" "active accounts" and "overall people ever registered and tried game". The last number looks great on any report or game package. But it barely tells truth.
The only thing warcraft did..... other then having a relaxed game experiance... was have a great marketing team.
since i dont have the facts, i have to state its my opinion
that they had something like a 30 million dollar budget, and spent only like 10 on developing the actual game. the rest went to its advertising campeign,
my argument is:
people play the game not because of game mechanics,
they play it because the marketing team outclassed every other game of this type of genre.
C'mon...i bought the game after i heard mr t say he made a night elf mohawk class......which doesnt even exist.
Warcraft Sucks

thats the link to the warhammer forums....pick a thread all of em are warcraft is holier then thou threads...the *******ess
And I still think Starcraft, Diablo 1,2 and Warcraft 1,2,3 are good Blizzard games ...
Even with good marketing l2 is not even close to wow in western market. We have like 50% of l2 here, so it's pointless to say that good marketing will help.

Amen !!! Still wating for SC 2 and Diablo 3...those games will mean a 1-3 months L2 absense for me :)

Yeah, I don't think marketing would do anything.

When I've shown friends this game in the past and explained it, they laughed at me. The only thing they did find entertaining was a huge siege that I took part in.

When I've explained games such as WoW and LOTRO they can at least understand them and though they would never play them, find the gameplay makes more sense to them.
What makes more sense to them?

What makes more sense to them?

the part where it's based off of a theme in a movie or other game that is already familiar to them. star wars jedis running around chopping each other with beams of light, blasting enemies with lightning and pushing each other around in the air wouldnt make much sense unless you saw the movie or read the books.
Warhammer is the worst mmorpg i've ever played.

What makes more sense to them?

The idea of having quests and tasks. As well as following some sort of story line.

Camping an area grinding mobs with the possibility of getting killed wasn't their idea of fun. But they are "the average person" when it comes to games. They are not interested in more hardcore experiences (if any experiences) when it comes to video games.
WoW was sucessful because they were the first MMO that really dumbed the game down to where anyone could be moderatly sucessful at it, but it was still fun to do. Kinda like reading a book, whereas every other MMO is much more dificult, much more like writing a book than reading one. Lin2 is by far the dominant MMO in korea, because computers & internet are something they grew up with, most in US grew up with easy single player platforms like playstation. Its only natural that the much more dificult and complicated Lin2 would be more popular in korea and the much easier WoW would be more popular in the US.

No the problem is that NCWest is not even trying to adjust l2 to western world market..

Opinions might change if Diablo or L2 came out with a movie like Stars Wars...
That's also if, the movie turns out to be anything like the game.
How many people see movies that turn into video games, or vic versa? A game that was mentioned years ago to 1 person, who's not interested. Suddenly becomes interested when they make a movie out of it.. What changed?

why would anyone wanna play wow with castles... the reason l2 has a playerbase in the US is cause its really the only decent korean grinder in the market here. If they tried to make it just another wow clone, they'd lose what subscribers they have.... besides thats what aion is for, heh.

I actually do think that people would play a WoW type game with castles. Yet I do agree with you that Aion is the contender for the more casual market. At least regarding quests and leveling curve.

However, I also think they have adjusted it to the western market.

We we started this game

you had the chance to drop and item or items on death
there were no bsoes, you had a pretty hard xp penalty especially at higher lvls
the grind was harder -no vitality system
no noob buffs
no blessing so you won't be pk'ed
no way to mitigate dropping a weapon
You couldn't pick up items that were sent to you unless you went to the warehouse they were sent from
1% xp death in a siege

The game is easier now then when it first came out. At least regarding those items

I meant they adding all new armors, new levles new bosses, adjusting current ones for end game lvl players but in NA servers 99% of legit community wount even have 80. or s80 armors/weaps. While in korea nc has pretty good 2-4x events, batle tournaments and other stuff..

Actually they can raid every town of the opposite fraction on any time they wish and I think it's almost the same as the sieges here.
raiding opposite factions town in WoW is nothing like sieges here in L2. all it takes is a skillfull rogue in WoW to cause havoc in opposite factions towns. and if your talking about Aion not WoW then i retract my statement.
Well, yeah I'm talking about WoW and maybe you need a skillfull rogue to do it, but it's not like here, I mean you can do it whenever you wan't and start a killing spree in the middle of the town and do it all day and night if you have guts of course... I hope you understand what my point is.
i do get your point about doin it whenever you want. but still like others have said, theres allways gonna be someone in your clan/ally that makes ya mad, and in the WoW style you cant just go and kill em and let out your aggresion wich sucks. thats why factions pvp is blehhhhhhhhhhh lol
Well, yeah you have point here, but instead you can go and kick some alliance [censored], right ? :)
lol i was alliance for the short time i played..........and to show how bad L2 had me hooked......lvl 70 night elf rogue named Frintezza >< i r lame.....rofl
Lol, alliance are all the bad guys and well, you know ... The power of the horde ? :) and still I like l2 AND WoW and some people say it's impossible for l2 player to love wow and the opposite and I think that's not very true atleast of my side :)
Don't worry :) at least as far as i can see l2 is becoming WoW, so if u dont like Wow, but like l2 well....u may better start getting used to it.
I like both games, but i prefer Lineage2 .....

I like WoW for the freedom and mobility you have, but I like more the skills and classes in Lineage2, although the same classes seem to be OP in both games. :)
