First off, NC make money from subscriptions which go into paying for development. If the game went free to play we would end up seeing adverts all over Aden. Sieges would be sponsored by Coke and my Strider would have a Subaru vinyl stuck to it's rear.
Then you would have even more people botting. They'd open 10 accounts, bot them all in different places and whichever managed to make it to 85 without being banned would be thier main character. Nothing to lose if the other 9 were banned.
They'd have to start selling in game items to make up for lost revenue. I don't want this on our servers - events should be where we get special items from.

Just had a chat with some old friends and they all say that they would come back if it turned f2p. As they like the game but dont feel its worth the Buck every month.

Paying for Lineage II keeps most of the idiots out. I've played (and still do) a few free to play MMORPG's and the majority of the players are extremely unkind, ignorant and a general nuisance. This is because they can just log on and off when they please without a care if thier accounts are banned. In P2P games, people tend to take pride and care over their actions.

Short answer: No way.
Long answer: There are a whole lot of reasons people dont play L2, the cost isnt a major one. Ive never heard anyone say, I wish I could play L2, if only I could afford those 15 bucks...
Making L2 free to play would further damage the game, more people would bot as theres no longer a monetary loss asociated with the risk of getting banned, hell, people could run an infinite number of bot clients and even if only a small percent escape the ban, they are golden.
I have tried many MMOs in the last decade, and the free to play ones have always been the worst, theres huge ammounts of botting, unfair advantages to those willing to sink huge ammounts of cash in the item shop and ultimately if you want to experience the whole game you always end up paying more than what a monthly subscription is.
They are still charging for Lineage 1, and that came out 10 years ago. I think both L1 and L2 have much larger user bases than other games which have gone F2P after having subscriptions (RF Online, etc.).
Free to play would not be a good thing, and I think purp outlined the two main reasons why in his first post. Being 1) Too easy for rolling many accounts, 2) Though not advertising, would be buying of ingame items, and probably end up spending more than do now anyway. And if you cant afford it, you'll end up feeling others have an advantage.
The subscription fee isnt a concern for most people, or especially anyone who has played the game or any other subcription mmo before. Constant development and maintenance, I think its fair and worth it, its just how mmo's operate. Far better than the problems with free to play.

The biggest issue with Lineage 2 is that it can take a loooooooooooooooong time before your toon is a end-game toon.
Also the adena are for some a problem, especially for those who are new to the game.

So basicly, the hard part of the game is leveling to high level and get the appropiate gear.
For example, in WoW, you can be in 1 day lv 80, we don't want that... But many people want that, thats why WoW has more (stupid) players then L2.
L2 is for the elite, in order for the elite to be elite, elite must be a few of many.
Consider it as a blessing that our servers arent run over by 13 year old kiddies who just dropped their Action-Man in their closet.

Everytime I only feel like using 1% of my brain.. and rest.. I'll go play another MMO like WoW, AoC, WAR, etc..
f2p MMOs are for kids who can't aford real games... lin2 is fine how it is, what would be worst than having a small comunity, is having a comunity of 10 yr olds, you think its bad with people acting like kids in war now, wait 'til they actually are kids.
and yeah... lin2 isn't an easy game, there are tons of MMOs out there for quick and easy gratification... this isn't it, and please, please, if you want that... go play one of them, don't try to push lin2 into being one of them, because believe it or not, some people like a hard game, and lin2 is pretty much the only MMO out there that is truely a time consuming pain in the *** to play.
To say F2P are for kids is overstating.
However L2 should stay p2p and improve on content and leveling speeds.
Not to the extent of what wow has (lvl 80 in a few days is ridiculous) but still there's room for serious improvement.
A game for the elite is not by any means a good game, however the people playing it do feel special.
Don't get me wrong, I love L2 no matter how many times I've quit or stopped playing, I'm just saying it from a more objective pov.
I'm probably not typical but this would not bring me back to the game. It would, however, leave me free to post to my heart's content until they pull the plug (this site is now blocked at work so thank your lucky stars about that). So, for this very reason alone, I give this idea a thumb's down, for the sake of the community.

Innova opened Russian servers. Free to play.
All sorts of idiots all over them. Everywhere you see - harsh harsh language. Every ******* from every private server comes there and shouts such idioticy that you can't take. (2 mins there and my brain exploded). Every moron makes 3-4 accounts and starts exp/bot. 5 servers filled (5k limit) within 5 minutes.
Tons of bots, adena sale sites already selling Adena on ruServers.
While f2p is great way to earn more $$ for NC soft, it's brutal to community.
And why go f2p? for few cheap ppl to return to server? for ppl to buy bots and bot up w/o fear of ban?
