Trying to decide if this is the game for me

I just got the game yesterday for the low price of 19.99 from Best Buy. I am in the Pheonix server and has seen about 4 people so far and 2 of t hem actucally spoke back...I am lvl 18 with very little playing and was wondering if this game is worth the time. From reading the forums so far it seems like bots run this game and it is not that much fun. At what lvl do I start meeting alot of players and where can I learn more about the game?
Around 25-30 you move to Dion and will begin to see more people. Bots aren't horrible but they can be an issue. Grind is tough as you get higher level; whether or not the game is for you all depends on what you're looking to get out of it.
You will love the game more as you level up. Don't desperate.

Ha, think I saw you at DE village when I was starting my next academy toon for clan rep :)

(at least there was a DE fighter there with "Drk" in the name, and I thought "oh, he is fighting keltirs, must be a new player who does not know about the newbie quests" :D )

Like the poster above said, it should be better when you go to Dion or at least Gludio. The changes which were put into the game during the last few expansions make lvling up from 1 to 20 VERY fast (depending on your race and what quests you have to do, it can be done in about an hour, including class change quest). Combine that with the problem that the game is already quite old by now so that not too many new players start out, and all you see in the low lvl areas is long time players who start an alt character and level it up in the most efficient way.

At Gludio and Dion, you will meet more live players, because that is where people start doing their daily kamaloka dungeon (that is an instanced dungeon which you can do once per day, basically you go in, kill one boss, get good xp (ca. 2 levels or so for a lvl 20-30) and it works well in a duo or trio). So people will always be there waiting for other random players to team up with. And that is also where you should start looking for a clan. Unlike many other games where you can solo just fine straight up to the highest levels, you pretty much NEED a clan in this game. It will be possible for a new player to solo up to lvl 50, maybe even 60, but after that you need the help of a clan to get regular xp parties (the good xp spots need you to be in a party with buffer/healer etc and most people party only with people from their clan/alliance) and help with getting your gear.

There is much more to say (e.g. advice on how to make money/get gear, whether you should start alt characters or not etc.), but most of that has already been posted a few times, so you should find it somewhere on the forum. The game is pretty good (otherwise we would not play it) - you're just arriving a bit late for the party. But because of the subclass system and people starting alt characters every now and then, you should be able to find a clan and people to party with.
Thanks for all the helpful advice. I has noticed more people in Dion and the others cities.Actucally found people to talk to and joined a clan. So things are looking up.

Well, your new to a game that's been around for quite a few years, so unfortunately those lower levels will always be rather lonesome. I have a few friends that run clans that stretch all levels, I can recommend you to on Phoenix, but until you start getting into those higher levels, like 61+ range, you won't find too much companionship in the game. Lucky for you they have made getting those levels far easier over the years though.

As for the Bots, yes... There is, and will always be plenty of those around, and NcSoft has been working overtime apparently of late to work on that problem. Next time your in game, shoot a message over to Shaboom, Angeliqa, Pumuky or Krontus if your looking for a clan.
Good luck in game hope you like it :) Also feel free to ask anything.

Your life is over! You will forget to pay your bills. You will forget your wife and kids names. You will miss graduation because you have a siege to attend. You get less sleep. You will become a zombie.

Actually it's a great game! When you get past DE village you will meet live people that will talk back. Enjoy!
Welcome to L2 :)

My best advice for a newbie: Learn how to use the manor (http://www.lineage2.com/Knowledge/manor.html) and do it as much as you can. It's the best way to gain resources at lower levels.

Glad for you :)

If you accidentaly find this clan to be not good for you, don't despair and lvl some more and look for another one. The higher the lvl, the more serious the clans get, and the more communication and coworking is required between clan members to reach their goal. If you stick around u'll see :)
Honestly, you won't enjoy the game until you are probably lvl 78+ and have ample gear and support character to buff you. That equates to having 3 accounts, for many months to get where need be. This is a great game, but not one for a part-time player. It's all about resources that are too difficult to obtain..

Just put it this way.. If you play legitimately, by level 52 you will have gear just good enough to kill level 40-45 mobs.. By 61 you'll sadly be killing level 50ish mobs. If you haven't quit by 76 you'll have been farming on blue mobs for 6 months and still not even wearing A grade(lvl 61)..

Hope you enjoy the game and stick with it, god knows we need more players even if for only one month.

I don't agree. It depends on your class, on the needs of your clan and on your desire to box a 2-nd account.

As for serious pvp tho, yeah, 78+ is almost required.

Depends on your class, okay tell me a class capable of soloing to end game? there are none.. Tell me a class capable of exping entirely on it's own to even 78 for a regular and new L2 player who might never intend on 2 or 3 boxing? once again, 0 classes available.

To the original poster, I will repeat what I said. Plan on running 3 accounts minimum on your computer and needing the next 6 months of your life to get to the point of having fun. Think about it like this, this stage of the game it will not operate in reverse, people are only going to gain more levels, get better gear, and be outside of the areas you will need help in. Hell, I know a clan on Luna who can no longer do Baium because of the fact they are all too high. How terrible is that?

you can start meeting people really early in the game it just depends what server ur on .join a clan
Lineage 2 is currently bordering on the tedious for me. I don't mind those kill x monster quests; but finding quests with good reward~work ratio annoys me so much!

Welcome to L2. l2 is a great game..mass pvp. This game is a hardcore game which isnt a game to play 1-2 hours in a week. Dedication here is needed or you wont succeed. Have fun!

If you're playing L2 hoping to have a lot of nice and rewarding quests to do, I'm sad to say, you'll be disappointed.
You can enjoy playing the game at any level - go out and do a little XP, chat with some people that you will meet in game and take enjoyment out of gearing up your characters and watching them grow (like a small hobby), however, if you want to compete with people that have been playing for 2-3 years - forget it.

If you want to compete with anyone towards the end of the game you will need to cheat. Each chapter that is released widens the gap between legitimate players and those who bot and buy adena (or have bots in game bringing in adena). I am in no way condoning cheating as I prefer to play legitimately myself, however, in this game you need to cheat to compete. Its funny how a game that has a focus on players competing vs one another actually forces them not to compete by encouraging cheating by design (and for those that cheat - you aren't competing at all - if you want to compete you need to play by the same rules and thus play the same game).

Before anyone flames me, I am just being honest here and ensuring that the guy knows what to expect before making a commitment.

I have to agree with the other poster. I have played the game perhaps about a month now, but I have to say people is where it is at. If you can find even ONE...FUN player to hang out with and do quests, it makes it worthwhile in my opinion.

I myself don't mind soling and am kind of a loner, but there are still some good quests that you can do. The rewards aren't substantial however, if that is what you are looking for.

It is a grindy sort of game like others I have played, but don't let that despair you. Just find another person to even experience points level with.

Other than that, I level with different characters to break the tediousness of it all. I recommend that if you have only one character.

I have learned from reading about the manor system, you can play the market by selling stuff to other players or even collecting drops.

Some items you get off mobs players don't need, but the NPC's will gladly buy for a good price from you.

As far as the OP, I had to ask myself the same question. I have played other grindy sort of games like FFXI and what have you. I'm no WoW person though with the cartoonish graphics.

It all comes down to what you want out of the game. That will decide if the game is for you or not. I have ALREADY found there to be more variety in Lineage II than other games I have played.

I highly recommend to not give it up. Like someone said though..if you only have a hour at a time sometimes...it can take some time to see progress. It does take a bit of ingenuity though since most people who play this game are like other games I have played...they are HIGH level.

Ostensibly that means that there won't be as many people to group with you. So pick a character you can stand to look at for hours on end and find something you like to do.

e.g. Myself for example, I like using ranged weapons. I get a kick out of it, even if it does cost more in the long run.

Other than that, don't let the costs of things beat you up. You can use the shadow weapons until you can buy a descent common weapon till you get to C grade or even higher I suppose I can't really say. There is no point buying a nice D grade weapon when you won't stay level 39 forever.

Dion is the first place you really see a lot of people in my opinion, unless you goto some of the other towns...which for me I did since I wanted to compare prices on gear. You can meet some interesting folks there and participate in kama's and what have you.

My last comment is aside from figuring out if the game is for you, is establishing what you want out of the game since consequently that goes hand-in-hand with whatever clan you end up joining. Clans typically have different objectives. Some are more PvE oriented, some have other objectives. Just like any other online game.

Again to the OP...hope anything I have said helped. I've played a month or so now.

yes sorry to say this forum has been since the last 3+ months crawling with people that do nothing more then complain so I can understand that is why you get that picture.
Nevertheless Welcome to Lineage2.
Nice to see that since the launch of gracia part1 many new players come here and also old players come back.

Lineage 2 really is a great game, but you really need to find a great clan to help you out.

Not only will clan members help you out but its fun to chat with them too while you grind
And you need to invest a lot of time...
