I just hit 44 and my new Death Spike actually does less damage than my 35 Twister. So, what level shall I stop using Twister and start using Death Spike?

level 52, deathspike hits harder, twister fails, PS Deathspike sucks too much to use to level anyway, stick to twister then use your summons, you're a summoner not a nuker.

When I was leveling my SH at your level. I was leveling outside of Ivory Tower killing the bugbears etc.. (Fast exp, mobs pretty close together & herbs drop)
delete your ps and sub a warlock. Kai will help you lvl to 56 10x faster than you will be able to manage to do with deathspike/twister/any nuke aug on a ps.

You don't need to wait until 52 to get servitor haste 2 for your summon to be useful. Kai is an unbelievable dd even unbuffed from 40 all the way up until you get feline king
Using kai to lvl is much easier than having to nuke to lvl up, especially if you don't have a boxed buffer. I am not sure what to say other than if you ask any warlock, they will tell you they had the easiest time ever lvling through c and b grade using kai.. and if you ask any ps they will tell you it was a pain in the *** not having a summon worth using, and very low lvl nukes and gimped matk/mp pool/mp regen made it difficult to lvl.
You can easily lvl with deathspike srry to say. Yes you are a summoner but just use the summon as a meat shield and deathspike away on stuff. Been in vally of Saints for a week and i can 2-3 shot them as my summon takes crap all damage. Very fast and safe lvlin.
If u wanna call it easy, if u wanna call it difficult, if you wanna say it took u more effort to get to lv 20 than to nuke ur way from 40-52, then I am okay with that.
The OP was asking for suggestions on where to lvl, from what I understood they just wanted to get 56 for summon. All I suggested was that you can lvl much faster with kai as a warlock than nuking on a ps.

I do want Summon Friend, but that is not the only reason I made the summoner - it's just something I am looking forward to do and want to get as soon as possible. However, I want to stay as a Phantom Summoner and plan on playing it long-term, too. I can't stand the cats if I'm honest.
Use soulless, do herb areas, you get herbs for haste2 etc. And nuke when u feel like it. What Jayy is talking about is not anything special for warlocks, the same holds true for all summoners.
U dont really see the difference in patk on the different 10% xp steal pets of the different summoners until 6x-ish.

Fast cast equipments are better for ps, hunt the places with herbs drops and use death spike in pvp or when all going bad for you :)
if PS is what you want to play, then nuking is pretty much as straightforward as any other nuker, grab +acu magic sword and hunt in herb dropping areas that you can 2shot easily, and if you don't have a recharger, then just use /walk and try the best u can to conserve mana. Smittie said to use soulless, and it really is a good idea, but not always 100% neccessary if you are hunting in areas where mops are always 2shot kills. If they aren't just use the summon to clean up while you move on to the next target.

Right outside of Ivory Towers (44-52) or Alligator Island (44-48) are good places to level if you are nuking. Both area's drop herbs! ;)
The dmg of the death spike of a PS is the same with the dmg of the death spike of a necro?
The only differences between them is in the power of the skill:almost the half power of the necro's death spike VS the power of the skill of the PS.
Also 44 INT for the PS 41 INT for the necro.
You have to calculate these two and if the dmg is the same you can lvl up your PS sub from 40-->75 without any summon assistance.

sry to say that but even with 3 int more a half power spell sucks to pretend to be a real nuker maybe with all mattk support it might be playable

I'm not a huge fan of the Silhouette either, but the others definitely have their uses. My recommendation is that people at least play around with each pet from time to time and see which ones match their playstyle. Yes, 95% of the time I use my Nightshade but I have found more uses for my Soulless as the levels go flying by and I have even gone back to my Shadow on rare occassions when I am solo grinding in difficult areas.
If exp is not a concern then the Silhouette can offer a fantastic value to summoners that are looking to grind for some adena.

Ok thats true but the pvp one in not a pvp summon. My nightshade does way better in pvp (admitting that i'm not S grade yet so it doesn't mean much) The shadow is actually good for catas but catas are way over rated if you solo there, and boring. Nightshade just seems to be the jack-of-all trades. Plus it can buff itself which helps.

This is what I did for exactly the same purpose:
got a typical nuker's set-up: Demon set, top C/B staves, +4 INT +4 WIT tattoos;
leveled using Twister (it barely failed unless the mobs were 53+) and Shadow Spark (never fails, overhit++); note that by that time Phantom Summoners did not have Death Spike yet;
as soon as possible (don't remember at what lvl) I moved to the north of Ivory Tower (south of Bandit Stronghold) area to hunt Elder Basilisks (low MDef) and Hunter Gargoyles (weak to Wind; better xp compared to other mobs of the same lvl) and stayed there until 56; the xp was pretty decent, and only the last 2 levels seemed to last rather long (did not have Vit herbs either); note that due to having no spellcasting mobs around I did not even bother to wear any jewelry.
I still visit that area regularly to do sin eaters on PS sub, in a nuker mode of course. :)
And I still don't use Death Spike because it does not look very efficient (both mana- and adena-wise) as for a PS; good old Twister and Shadow Spark work just fine.

I never thought I would go solo nuking in FotD on my PS with Nightshade out just for Transfer Pain.
I two-shotted every frigging mob, except the Zombie's in the groups. Went very fast ))
For the details;
Lv74 Phantom Summoner w/ +4 Sword Of Miracles Acumen

Done this on 3 warlocks, 1 ps and 1 es but with karmian set, two shots is what it takes much of the time, perfered two fast shots that hit a little harder than needed than one shot that had to do all.
Tried all with summons for part of a level and all without summons and just nuking!
Nuking is faster. But at certain levels and/or level spots doing both together is good.
And although they nukes 'fail' it isnt nearly enough to be that concerned about.
Fastest leveling is 1) ES (fastest) 2) WK 3) PS (slowest)
im curious why no one has mentioned that the PS is a dark caster, i leveled like mad when i hunted devine mobs. Further currently im soloing in Martyrs without any real effort, jut leveled again actually on my sub-ed PS to 64 and am flying exp wise. I use my nightshade for the exp grind the only real outside buffs i get are Holy for the undead and Devine Resistance. Otherwise my Deathspike works great on the devine creatures, i dont bother with the undead thats what the summons is for. Afterall, that is why were called Summoners, we summon, let them do the hard work.
