I have been away from the game for years... I hear certain things have changed a lot, especially with newbie quests and rewards... however I just rolled an alt and started a BD from level 1, and it seems some of the quests are still utterly pointless if you have some adena already. What is worth doing, and what should the strategy be for the first 10 hours or so of gameplay to get going quickly and efficiently? Just grind mobs around, or are there certain quests that are "must-do" ?
Just need sort of a quick guide to what to watch out for, and when to watch for it, in the first 20 levels or so.

dont go out and try to hit mobs to level to 20.
in the starting area there's a newbie guide, talk to him, kill 1 mob, get the free ss then go to your village.
When you get to the village go talk to the newbie guide there, he will give you a series of quests that will get you to lvl 18 in under an hour. At level 18 you can start your first class change quest which will get you to 20 THEN you exp.
Small pointers. When you complete a quest that the newbie guide points you to, go back to him, there is often bonus exp.
Doing it this way will get you to 20 with enough adena to buy a d common weapon and a d common armor/jewel set. When you 're 20 teleport to giran and buy them from the npc shops. Then back to dion to exp.
It's a clan quest, you need to be in a clan academy, have a sponsor and do the quest.
To be honest, with the free buffs you get from the newbie guide common armor is more than enough, I d say don't bother.
Take your main to a whare house location in whatever town he's in, locate the warehouse freightman npc and choose to send freight. Choose the char you wish to receive whatever you send ... and send away. Keep in mind this costs 1000 adena, so if say you have 10,000,000 on your main only send 9,999,000 (keeping 1000 to pay for it)
Wait 2 mins, I ll do a more detailed 1-20 walkthrough for you.

You will spawn next to 2 npcs, one is a newbie helper the other is a master (depending on race)
Talk to the newbie helper, he will tell you to get 1 blue diamon from the gremlins. Kill 1 gremlin, wait a couple of seconds, pick up the blue diamond it drops give it to the newbie helper he gives you a certificate and soulshots. Give the certificate to the master npc get some more soulshots and leave the starting area
Go to your home village. Find the newbie npc, read the text he will tell you to talk to another npc in the village. That's your first quest that usually involves talking to 3-4 npcs in town for a pointless reward. When you complete the quest go back to the newbie guide. He will level you up to 7 (i think) and tell you to talk to another npc.Make a note of the npc name. At this point the newbie guide offers you some shadow weapon coupons, take them. Talk to the newbie guide again, choose to get buffs, talk again choose the weapon wharehouse (or to receive the tokens if you haven't already). Pick one weapon from the choices (dagger is my preference), that's a shadow weapon that lasts for 3 hours (more than enough ... and if you need more you have I think 5 coupons you can trade for 5 weapons)
When you ve done all that talk to the newbie guide again, choose teleport to another village and go to the Kamael village. Once there locate Marcella (she's in an exit) and do the quest she offers. It's a talk to 3 npcs quest and get a free no grade armor set. Equip your armor, go back to the kamael village newbie guide and teleport back to your village.
Go to talk to the npc you noted down before .. if you didn't note it down talk to the newbie guide, text should point you to him. Npc will give you a quest to go kill some mobs and bring back quest items for money. Go kill enough mobs to get just 1 quest item, not more, and go back to your village. Turn in the item, get like 20 adena for it then go talk to the newbie guide.
Grats you 're level 10. Newbie guide sends you to another npc to do your wepon quest. You need to complete this quest (guides if you 're stuck are here http://l2.eogamer.com/wiki/Quest_List_Grouped_by_Town). Once you complete it you ll get a nograde weapon (which you can sell, it's pattack is lower than the shadow weapons).
Talk to the newbie guide again. Grats you 're level 15 and have a new npc to talk to. Go talk to him and do his quest. When you have completed the quest go back turn the items in and talk to the newbie guide again.
Avoid killing mobs before you hit 20 .. only kill enough mobs to complete the quests. You have a vitality bar that multiplies your exp, snag is it decreases as you kill mobs, so save your vitality for 20+ levels.
If you are away from your village you don't need to always walk back. You get 10 free soes to kamael village (and from there you can teleport back to your village for free) and 5 general soes (save those for later)
That's about it ...
PS forgot to mention in my last post, once you send the money you need to login your new char, take that char to the wharehouse freightman npc in your village and choose receive freight to get whatever you ve sent. Receiving freight is free.
If you do the newbie quests correctly you come out with 6-12k NG ss, not 400. You can also trade between alts by finding a hidden spot, drop stuff and quickly switch characters, pick it up. Just be sure to be out of sight of others.
go to kameal village after doing the gem quest since it gives you a free wooden set
at lvl 15ish go to dorf village since you only have to kill 1 spider to ding lvl 18
I heard that there is now D armor as quest rewards? Is that worth pursuing?
The quest is outdated. The armor crystallizes for less crystals than you pay for it. And, frankly, you don't really need armor in D-grade.
Crap... your guide says not to clan new characters, or the guide will stop giving tasks. We entered the academy part of our clan last night... and I'd rather not leave and cause them trouble.

I agree. I got the "Clan Oath Brigandine" set through the clan quest. Was great through most of C grade. Problem...cant trade, sell, or use with even another alt. My bone headed move was to waste EAD on them to +3 each...ugh, what a dummy

Nope not a dummy cuz now if you get another academy toon they can use it or is that not the case anymore? I've gave away my 2 clan oath sets i had so not sure what the changes are now.
academy armor set it tradeable and if you crystalize it you get the exact same amount of crystals as you gave for it back
You used to get the same amount of crystals back. However, in that update where they lovered the shop costs of D-grade, they also lowered the crystal count of Clan Oath armor, forgetting to reduce the amounts of crystals needed for the quest.
Buy a OE D-grade weapon (7+) and equip it to your level 1 toon... get to level 20 the fastest way possible :D.
Dont even worry about the grade penalty... you will kill mobs with one hit almost 99% of the time... hp will stay full all the time... 0 down time...
From 20-40, if you got a OE D-grade weapon 10+ heeheheh then everything will be a piece of cake, not need to party not need for a buffer... newbie buffs is all you need... Get some GHP for risky situations and thats it...
At 40, spend the 3kk in the easy 2nd quest transfer quest at Giran and thats it...
Sell your OE weapon and get yourself a C-grade amor+C weapon...
Reach 52+ as fast as you can, and buy a common b grade weapon... dont waste money in a superior item until you hit A-grade...
