RMT? Banned!

yay!!!!!!!!
Bah--this will remove 4 or 5 farmers from the game. If it actually happens this will make no noticeable difference.
The soulless you see in game are run by your fellow players--not some guy at a computer in China.
The NA Adena Sellers will be drinking Champagne. I think this will make little difference but i imagine that everything will be scarce for awhile so that "adenayeah" gets the best bang for the buck.

I just had to add this comment that was in the article :

"Game companies typically forbid gold farming but committed virtual currency traders find ways around such rules. Some game companies have recognized the futility of trying to ban the practice and have built virtual commerce into their game infrastructure."

Really??

This post will be locked or deleted as soon as "princess" wakes up and checks the forums so hurry and post :p
4-5 chinese farmers.. = 500 accounts.. :P

And yeah.. adena prices will go up.. if they go up, there will be less adena on the market.. so item prices will really drop.

I'm not commenting on the economic change--rather on the number of reduced soulless. My opinion isn't that we'll see 4-5 less farmers, it's that you will not notice ANY reduction in the soulless on your server.
Because the soulless we all see aren't chinese farmers.

Sure there will be an impact IF this happens--ebayed gold prices will rise. Who cares?
I care, because Item prices go down.

Good to buy S gear for my sub.. because I refuse to pay 2b for a +3 AM acumen 150 Wind.
I'm not going to go into how I feel about it because everyone knows already! What I am going to do is start contacting everyone I know that used to play and let them know what happened. I see this as a start to bring new life into a wonderful game. Seems like just baby steps now, but in time it will be running!

*Passes BEER to an Awesome Start!
Don't like beer.. gimme Whiskey! Real one!

Not so sure that prices will go down on S Grade. There are still lots of players in A Grade. What this might do is have the bottom fall out of the A Market...or more so than whats already happened.

Also Adena prices have gone from .19 to .21 and i haven't really noticed a drop in S grade.

I really think there is a HUGE misconception about botting in this game. I think the larger % (by far) of adena is a by product of botting by players--which they sell cheaply to resellers on ebay or whatnot.
It's just my opinion, but I think it's been the better part of two years since the so-called Chinese farmers were a significant % of overall bots.

Players are botting--pretty much "period". I'll predict that economic adjustments on most servers are pretty modest, and that is IF the actual Chinese Government can accomplish their ban. They can't seem to accomplish FEEDING people so perhaps we should wait to see how they do with this announcement.

Just my opinion, but if there are 2000 accounts on a server, and if--say--600 of those are bot account, I really think of the 600 that 10 are Chinese gold farmers working for resale sites. The gold produced by the other 590 24/7 botters is FAR more impactful on the server's economics (as are the mats they derive) than the remaining Chinese.

Of course I could be wrong--but this is how I see the ratios of cheaters. 99% players cheating and 1% chinese gold farmers.

yea lots of the bots r bots from the top clans or w/e so ull still see bots everywhere
Doesn't anyone find it interesting that the shere number of people employed by china and the actual income generated by these people for and in china is something the government is willing to just throw away in these economic times.

I can not believe that they are willing to stop this when they have a clean industry that brings in cash from all over the world for nothing but effort.

No, I think this is going to be used to kill certain types that they want killed, not all the farmers at all.
Out of 600, 10 are Chinese? You said "I think" yourself meaning there are no sources to cite on those facts. I know, I know... It was just an example.

Either way, my wife and I just started playing again after quitting twice because of botting that we remember being so bad we couldn't even level up a couple characters. It is good to see the game doing better. This could only make it better.
I love China in some decisions.. so get ready.. adena prices will go up.. and items will go down.. sell everything and buyback in 1 month!

This really doesn't effect L2 that much, and pretty much most of the Farmers you see around now a days aren't even Chinese Farmers anymore. They kind of left the game over a year ago for the most part, so you probably will see little to no impact from this.

Besides, it says China is banned from selling it, that is a pretty easy work a round anyways.

S Grade Prices have been going down already, because Dynasty is easy to get, and if your clan is doing Tiat, even easier to get Top S80/S84. As for paying that for the Arcana Mace... Unless people are gathering Wind Stones, and or XPing regularly in HB, don't expect the price of that to change much. Wind/Earth is still typically the most difficult elemental stone to get.

I would say you are 100% right on with this.

Like Jyrki inferred....just cause they say doesn't mean that they will ...plus lots of ways around it. If you read the article it also says that the chinese don't consider actual items as curency. So it could be rl dollars/euros for a weapon or whatnot. But again i don't think this will affect us.
Even if the majority of bots today are "players" they still have to bring their botted goods to market. I think that there are plenty of resellers based in China and I imagine this stage to be the choke point where the law gets applied. IF it gets applied. The point raised about squashing an industry during a global depression does seem counter intuitive.

Are Chinese-based businesses even able to accept PayPal?

why did this go into DrT's post?
What I mean by real Whiskey.. is that I only take Scottish and Irish Whiskey. :P
I think you are all overreacting to this news and reading more into it than it is.

The new Chinese Government policy is not being directed towards people farming Gaming Currencies.
poor farmers, except for the part where you have to call to NY for your adena to be delivered, not China...

So, I doubt that China would bann American companies... lol

I reread the article and did a search on QQ coins. It seems that farmers in China are able to trade their game currencies for QQ coins to be used for different services. I'm not familiar with the actual mechanics but it seems easy to buy QQ coins -> trade for adena -> sell adena for real cash via paypal or whatever.

Yeah Trism, I'm not sure how hard or easy it is to get a paypal account for foreign companies. Don't you just need a credit card/bank account and an email address to get an account?
You can get an account, but you will only be able to pay, not to receive funds on it if your billing address is in China.
grats L2 on the ban, hope you can wrangler out a few more after this
You can get an account, but you will only be able to pay, not to receive funds on it if your billing address is in China.

What about if you use one of those revolving IPs...but really all you have to do is get a NA partner.

So NA partner buys adena from Chinese partner with rl cash through Bank Transfer. Invoice is for 10 wazzos ..heh. Then NA partner recieves adena in game and sells on ebay. Paypal pays to NA Partner....and the beat goes on.
It wont have any noticeable effect on the game in this part of the world.
First of all China has no problem enforcing their laws so I think this will happen. It's one thing if your caught doing something like this in the States or Canada but if you get caught doing somthing like this in China they'll beat the hell outta you and then probably throw you in a work camp for about 5 years.

Gogo China go beat some farmer azz.

+1 I need some prices increase!!!
The Chinese government, however, appears to be uninterested in regulating sales of in-game items for real cash. A report (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/bizchina/2009-06/27/content_8330180.htm) in the English-language China Daily says that in-game gear is not considered virtual currency, so selling virtual items can be expected to continue.

I think you guys need to reread this before you get excited. Though for a moment there I was thinking of future games but meh this caught my eye.
How is this going to affect the bots on our servers anyway? They aren't run by chinese sweat shops, you fewls, they are run by BRAZILIANS!
Cool, at least we are keeping the money in the America's and helping out the poor here.
They (the pacific rim) can help each other with their local games, etc.

It a start to cure the cancer that has been allowed to grow on our servers!
and calling people names isn't going to help!

Isa, Cookies??? o.0
pff rmt shutdown woohoo u can buy EVERYTHING on american sites

they should close ALL private server this would really revive l2
on maxed out servers ppl will fight for their huntingground daily pvp drama and less bots cause if u want a hunting ground u will pvp a automato before a real player

more groups raids market erverything

so the big question why arent there any steps in this direction ?
As fascinating a topic as it may be, please refrain from discussing EULA violations here. Thanks folks :)
Isa, Cookies??? o.0
Told ya already at the LAUGHING DWARF INN I don't cook cookies, just shots!
*passes BEER to all cookie cookers! :D
The most popular form of virtual currency in China is called "QQ coins"...
lol
Regarding EULA violations, dont get me started... I heard for years ppl leaving for privates because the bots here. Of course, after a while their server is falling for any of the top reasons and everything they did there is lost. But that is not the point, the point is how can they manage to keep the bots out while here it cant be done ?
Bot programs recognise each other, a bot can say if a char is on bot or not, but GMs cant...
After a few weeks where the BS and HS areas had less bots, now they are back in style. They even have drivers that PK legit ppl that train their bots in the hope to get a spot to level.
Not that is something new, it was very widely used in the past in catas, but since the bot protection system which does not allow mobs to go too far was introduced, they are almost safe there, yet i can still train in BS, for instance.
The driver asked me if i have nothing better to do than hunt for AFK ppl... Of course, if there was a spot unbotted in BS, I would have just reported like usual, but since there was none, well, what to do...
M
But that is not the point, the point is how can they manage to keep the bots out while here it cant be done ?
The point is not that retail can't keep the bots out... The point is that retail don't want to. Hint: money... ;).
Updates: currency conversion corrected, added China Daily reference, corrected gold farming paragraph and headline.
Editor's note: The former headline, China Bans Gold Farming, was changed because it incorrectly extended the scope of the new regulations to all virtual currency exchanges. The new rules limit official game currencies sold by game operators, but not "virtual network props (http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=hp&hl=en&js=n&u=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.cnfol.com%2F090629%2F101%2C158 7%2C6103007%2C00.shtml&sl=zh-CN&tl=en&history_state0=) such as costumes, games, coins, weapons and other props."

Unless I see some hard laws ie Article 16 Paragraph 6 Line 12 That kind of stuff which I can use to research this as a valid article. This is a fake and/or not entirely accurate.
