Manticore is a good D grade light set but check the armor shop in Giran for others, you can read what is needed for bonus if any on the top armor piece. Common would probably work fine for you the short trip through D grade :)
Hunting zones are shown on the map, click World Info/Hunting zones and sort by level. I also go by what quests are available for different hunting areas, which is also shown on the World Info and when you click one it shows where the quest is. Some sites that have quest guides are elliebelly.net and arktic.net/woj
Yes, get a pet as soon as you can :D They are lots of fun and good helpers :) The wolf quest is lvl 15 and the baby pets lvl 24/25. There are sites that have a lot of pet info too, try google I don't have them bookmarked. They also become quite valuable at higher levels. I have leveled several wolves to great wolf (lvl 55) and a buffalo and kookaburra to Improved (lvl 55). Sold a few, have some I wouldnt part with hehe.
When the pet is young, be sure to carry plain old rez scrolls from the grocery, they do die occasionally. After they get higher level you can buy blessed pet rez from the Dawn Priest. I usually try to level them either in a cata, parked in the hall where I pull to them or in a non aggro area like lower Execution Grounds where they can follow you around but not get hit. If they die from a mob or pk lol, you have 24 hours to rez them before they go poof forever but be aware, if they die from starvation, lack of food, they are gone for good right away :/ Just keep plenty of food in his inventory (he will feed himself) and don't go afk with pet out.
I have heard people say the baby Couger has the best range of buffs for Kamael but I have never leveled a Couger. That link above should help you decide.

do i have to be the same level as the pet? like if i am 20 can he be 40 or something if somebody gives me one or whatever.
One thing I have heard but not experienced is that if a pet is 15+ levels above you, you will lose the ability to control it. Maybe others can verify.
I level pets of different levels and they still level, example a new baby lvl 24 on my 50ish spoiler still gains xp but at a slower rate. If you and the pet are closer in level it will go much faster, seems if the pet is a little higher than you the pet's xp is faster still but I haven't done any actual number crunching.
