Great L2 Site down :( It's time to update Official Site!!!!!

Rohirrim's site has been taken down due to bandwidth theft, details here http://boards.lineage2.com/showthread.php?t=204349

Since we can't post in that section, only fan site mods can, I wanted to mention that it was the ONLY site I have found with accurate and CURRENT skills info, and also recipes, weapons info and much more. I used this site on a daily basis and Rohirrim put a lot of work into it.

It is time to get the official site updated. It is very annoying not to be able to get accurate info here  and I don't mean the fan sites page ><

Hope you find a way to fix the bandwidth theft Rohirrim. Dang it ncsoft should pay for more bandwidth for you lol :p or hire you...
you don't realize just how horrible the information on the official site is till you lose a good site like this.
Moxie promised to be working on the website in the interview. It will be ready soon™!

have to see to believe :x
It is a great site, I tried going there this morning and was wondering why it wasnt working. That sucks, best site evar.
I agree, I was disappointed when I couldn't get access, and to be honest, I thought it was like what happened to Stratics, when all their good quest info disappeared mysteriously. Another L2 site bit the dust....

So the question I have to the Community Moderator is:

If you don't have time to put up a site that reflects the current chronicle, why don't you:

1) "Hire" Rohirrim to do it, or give him the ability to update it (his UI is better than yours anyway, tbh)

OR

2) Provide a wiki function for community members (who are logged in and forum bannable) to make changes and assign community moderators to enforce language rules and keep it clean and accurate.

This way, you can "manage" rather than worry about every little detail, and it puts the responsibility of keeping the information up to date on the community (who are the ones complaining about it).

Just a thought.

What is wrong with L2 Vault Site. What information does it not have that you guys want on it?
Too much to even list.

Vault is trash.

I don't mean to sound too mean, but that sight is borderline useless for pretty much anything I'd need to look up.

It looks like some abandoned fansite that hasn't been paid much attention since C4 or so.

Spend more time updating the site, and less time asking people what they need. When you have a solid foundation, then you can make better use of "community input."
What is wrong with L2 Vault Site. What information does it not have that you guys want on it?

I use L2Vault as my quest guides now, since Stratics degenerated. What is wrong with it? Well, it is disorganized, for one. There is so much information that is irrelevent, for two. It is God aweful slow, for three. It could use some work. Try not to put everything on one page.

For class information (skills up to 83) and clan skills, rochand is still the best.

And some quest guides are not complete, bugged copypasta or outdated.
This is really too bad. I really liked the tax and skills sections.

Stratics was good for quests but i always went to Ellie's site first...i still go to Ellie's site and let it redirect me.
EOGamer has what you ask for, it has up to date quest guides, tons of information articles, now adding raid boss info, etc. It does lack skill information, but we could easily add that if we had the information available.

We purely use the wiki system, as we invented that whole thing for L2 (with the L2 Stratics origional wiki, which the incompetent Stratics higher ups lost along with a lot of the quest guides) and our wiki is the largest and most used of all L2 wikis (having thousands of articles and over 20.000 edits).

We have also invented a nice DB/Wiki system where we can import Database information into a Wiki, so if Rohirrim has a database over the skills and other data he has for items, etc. Then we can import it into the wiki so not only can it be maintained through a database, it can also be updated and added to by the community...like for instance adding tips on how to use a skill, skill combinations, how a skill works at various levels/class, etc.

Check it out at http://l2.eogamer.com , links on the right to the wiki. It needs a better organised main menu for sure, but all the information is there...search for it if you're missing something.

This site is made by L2 veterans like Elliebelly, Maribel, me, Venkman (the author of the whole Stratics DB quest system) and Animoria,
What is wrong with L2 Vault Site. What information does it not have that you guys want on it?

Vault has a large chunk of it's content copy pasted from other sites, with no mention of original authors
It's extremely unorganized
there's too much useless crap on there

Although I find it hilarious when the poll results get posted here. I think <50 poll votes should tell you you're doing something wrong with your site.

Vault is just a garbage website.
I agree, I have been missing rochand as well. Best site hands down for Clan skills and Class skills. Also the descriptions actually hace meaning, not some vague description that you have no idea what it actually does (Thanks NC).

Would be great to see a combination of rochand for skills/weapons and a place like eogamer for quests.

As to the OP. Yeah, it would be nice to see the actual website updated with current information. Even if they had to take 10-20 peoples monthly subscription fees and pay a consultant like Rohirrim to do a few updates a month.
I didn't even know about that site, so I guess I am not missing much...

I do want to give a +1 to the eogamer site though, it is what I use when I need any info and especially for quests.

I I went to vault one time and never went there a second time. Same goes for post crash stratics.
Well I don't have hopes for the official site to be updated fully any time soon™ so maybe someone has some tips for Rohirrim on how to stop the bandwidth theft?

There should be internet police for these thieves! ><
l2blah is da best lol

why u need those sties for? I've never used any sites except for l2wh and l2calc (back in tha days) after all, ppl at theforum are always helpful.

Put your hands on the monitor! You are virtually under arrest!
Hire Commander Riker to punch them in the face.

hehe another trekie :p waiting for STO to be released?

Thanks for all your comments.

As SoulMagic noticed the site is up again and will stay up for few days so that I can collect some more data on the bandwidth theft to improve my countermesurments.

So far I have managed to cut the bandwidth usage by 35% (give or take), but I'm still far from the target.

I got several backups of the site so even if the server crashes with 100% dataloss, I will still be able to restore it 100% ;)

If I ever got that offer from NCSoft, then I would had accepted it right away...although I kinda doubt they are willing to hire people that has to work from a remote location.
btw the thought of sending NCSoft an e-mail about it has struck me several times :p
btw the thought of sending NCSoft an e-mail about it has struck me several times :p

Doooooooooooo it! lol they are working on changes to the forums atm  I don't think anyone is spending any time on the important site stuff :(

Glad you got the site back up :D
Doooooooooooo it!

Maybe I should :p
Hehe, I am local, I can be your proxy, and go in once a week if remote is a big no no lol ;)
goha and 4game? Ok, atleast Goha, but wtf here 4game? :)

those two are on the top of the bandwidth theft list, but there are several other russian (majority) sites doing the same as well as some private server sites that use my icons and components to their forum and site theme...to bad all the sites that are hotlinking now will get a transparent 4000*4000 pixels gif image with 2 messages to mess up their site (I may blow it up to 8000*8000 later on).

I bet people in those forums are already complaining about it :p
LOL I fell off my chair and had a hard time getting up after reading and answering a mail I got from an angry forum owner.

He demanded me to allow hes forum to hotlink to my site so that he wouldn't have to edit hundreds of posts containing links to the images located on my site...aparently he didn't like the image I'm providing to everyone that wants to hotlink to my site.

I guess you all know what my answer was.

oh and btw...linking to my site has been disabled, you need to copy&paste the link into a new browser/tab to be able to enter my site (PM me or leave a message here if you run a fan site and got a link to my site so that I can add you to the allow list).
DEMANDED??

Wow... Thank you for the awesome laugh.
Rohirrim, when I try open site in my browser, i have empty white window. Why?
PS. This trouble only in Firefox browser... in IE norm.. Why? .. strange
Sa1en, It works fine for me with Firefox, maybe clear your cache or force load it.

and Rohirrim LOL the Nerve of that guy!!! Maybe he doesnt realize he's stealing bandwidth :p

btw Rohirrim now that you have that bandwidth problem fixed, how about adding about skill overenchanting and what it gives? :D Sagi first!!! hehe

I will look into it.

I'm still monitoring the bandwidth usage so I can't say with certainly that it's safe.

Adding new stuff like skill OE is in my agenda, but 1st I need to make sure the bandwidth usage is withing my hosts monthly usage limit

That in no way is the proper way to do things. After all, you do want people to visit your site. If someone clicks a link to go there, and all they see is a blank page, they're not going to think to manually enter the URL, and in the end, they'll go somewhere else.

I'm no coder, but I know what you need done can be accomplished with the .htaccess, because we used to do it on my site (I didn't write it, again, I don't code much). It essentially disallowed anyone from hot-linking images and it solved all our problems. It's really too bad you find yourself dealing with this, though. You are offering a valuable service, so you shouldn't have to stress over things like this.

I second that the site is fantastic though... I visit every few days.

Because I feel so compelled, and the question was asked, I'll toss in my 2a about L2 Vault. I used to also run a game fansite, so I have respect for those who help run them, but there are obvious improvements that can be made. The navigation for one isn't easy to follow, and the way the class guides, for example, are laid out is a little bizarre. There will be more than one category for various aspects, and each page has one or two paragraphs. It's straight-out ugly to deal with in all regards. Then there's the lack of proof-reading/editing, and less-than-ideal screenshots. I'm really fussy with things like this, so maybe most are not. I don't know.

Then there's the issue of many quest guides with inaccurate or poorly-worded information and broken images. I visited the site recently for a few quest guides, and each one had broken images, so I just went elsewhere.

EOGamer is doing a good job of things, and if I find myself with more time in the future, I'd like to contribute where able. It's helped me get a couple of quests done in the past little while, so kudos to the volunteers there.

I'm not happy about it aither...I will some modifications and block only the worst sites.

All my blocks happen with the help of htaccess and some other blocking technices that I'm trying out.
You shouldn't need more than htaccess, just make sure your images reside in a subdirectory and not the root of your hosting directory (cause running htaccess on root can slow things down for you)
hey all,

I don't mean to intrude on Rohirrim's thread here (glad to hear you're sites back up though dude and hopefully you get those wrong-doer's put in their place. =)

But..... L2vault's name is mentioned here quite a bit and I figure it was time to respond to some of the feedback given for our site. Thanks to those who have given their input. I respect the mature manner in which it's given, even though I know the postings were meant as a general fan site comparison. Here's a couple things I'd like to touch on that were mentioned:

1) Broken images in guides: We've found a problem where the volunteer who posted 300+ guides (yes, bless that wonderful child) had served the images on her server and not ours. She has since moved the location of the images which broke the links in our guides. Over the last week, I have been recovering these images and updating the guides to fix the broken links. Out of the 300, I have 100 more to go. Fun times, let me tell ya ;) So, ultimately, the broken images problem will soon be a thing of the past. I'm sorry to hear about anyone who has lost trust in our quest guides during this time but please try again shortly. With guides to almost 90% of all quests available, I would like to think that l2vault is valuable quest guide resource. I'll make an annoucement once the remainder 100 are complete. I'm hoping by the end of the week, if not sooner.

2) Navigation: No objection here; our navigation needs work. Believe it or not, it has actually improved greatly. The idea of putting all the guides on one page came as a result from the guides being all over the **** place forcing people to look in 10 different places before they found what they were looking for. However from the sounds of it, it seems as though this may not have been the best solution. Maybe one page guide navigation wasn't the best of choices and we'll have more work ahead of us to find the happy medium. I'm always open to suggestions, so please email me at [email protected]

3) Poor Poll Results: It was mentioned that we shouldn't think greatly of ourselves because our polls only bring in a sad number of results. With 12-15 thousand hits on any given day, I think we should still be pretty proud =)

Thanks peeps! I think there were a few more points mentioned, but I'm out for now and will look back when I get home... back to you Rohirrim =)
Thanks for hopping in on this Jayla. I also have something to add.

L2vault is far from perfect. I have to admit that it has been a struggling site ever since I first ran across it in C3, and it looked for a long time like not much work was being done on it to improve it. I hopped in to help about a year ago when Jayla was left alone to handle the entire site herself, and we have both worked hard to improve it one step at a time. It has been a lot of work and proven to be very difficult, with out-dated guides--some submitted by people who don't speak english as a primary language (which is fine)--and some with old images, broken images, etc. As Jayla said she's trying to fix the images in the guides. We have been going through step by step trying to fix spelling errors and old information. It is a LOT of work. But we are doing our best.

We have also been trying to put our focus on community-based efforts, like interviews, which takes a lot of time as well...thus why we recently put out a call for volunteers. We will not sideline features like this however, as we feel that including interaction from the L2 community is more important by far than having a perfect site.

Are we constantly working to improve it? Yes. Will we continue to do so? Yes. The site's look has actually been re-designed by me, including an updated banner and colors that more closely match the current look of the official site. My hands are tied with activating the new look, however. So when that is activated, we will let you all know.

Please be patient with us. If you see things on our site that you feel you could improve, by all means join our team and help out. Real life often takes a front seat in many things, and all we can do is our best to help out the community with whatever we have to offer, and improve things as best as we can within our means. :)

Complaining about what? You, as well known hater of russian players just banned all russian IP`s and thats all. If you think you somehow can ruin 2 portals with tons of self written or translated guides (all with links to original sites like elliebelly or stratics if this translation or quote) and with visitor count you cant even imagine - keep doing this things. I think they just should ban your site on the boards if you dont need 60% of your visitors.
Ps: if you were the owner of huge mmo portal how would you check each guide "Does it contains small gif from rochand or not?" when they appear each week, growing and modifying? I think you cant - you even cant handle your own bandwith and crying about this now.

ps: you have good site but not unique, not the first and for sure not last. Just dont spit on the visitors from Russia - not all of them are "bandwith triefs". Lack of money - make donations to handle popularity.
So go make your own gifs for the russian sites. Why should he pay for your site?

So ... instead of apologizing for stealing the dude's bandwidth you 're hmm doing what? Blaming him for your failure at siteadmining? Good strategy dude, clearly you are one of the better siteadmins on the whole internets.
Contact them, communication is a bliss.
I'm keeping a french fansite up-to-date with translations of news, events and interviews, and frankly even if I take the time to upload the pictures on the fansite, it's tempting to go faster and just copy/paste the address of the original picture.
Just ask them politely to upload the picture on their website, even if they only do a translation of your work.

If you can find in my post words "im the forum owner" - i give you a candy. Site management failure? Why Rohirrim dont disabled hotlinking when he started project? Oh wait, now when tons of users (not the forum owners) on public forums use his gifs (property of NCSOFT btw :)) he trying to "revenge" with distructive methods) Nice way to cut off visitors (nice webalizer stats ;))
Well he didn't block visitors from Russia as you claim, he blocked hotlinking, it's his right so get over it. And since it's property of NCsoft why are you using it?Go draw your own icons

Hotlinking is frowned up by pretty much every siteop on the internet, why are you trying to argue it's your god given right to do whatever you please? If you don't like the way he behaves copy the icons locally, run a 10line perl script (or db query for dynamic pages) to replace links back to his page with local links and quit freakin whining.

Did he tried first to contact those portal owners before making 5kX5k pix gifs, before calling them thiefs and talking about "they will complain". No he just silently cut off boards who make 22k and 8k hits for his site each day. Nice and friendly way to do things.
Right on Rohirrim! I'm glad your site is back up and ******* all the thieves off. They deserve that and more.

you 're not generating hits by stealing pictures, you just generate traffic for yourself. Linkbacks are hits, do you have stats for your linkbacks to him cause I seriously doubt you 're sending 30k visits/day to him. You maybe be leeching 30k pictures/day though.
So Jayla16 and Tamoh, why do you work for Vault anyway? Is it for the positions? I don't think they pay you. They didn't even pay my friend Seridove when she was Site Manager for L2 Vault, and she generated more visits than you have now.

Its not like the system is all that awesome either, the system is old and cumbersome, the wiki's are fragmented and non-cached.

Perhaps you might be interested to join a bigger team, with other veteran Lineage 2 players and the biggest L2 Wiki in the western world. We would be more than happy to have you and it might be nice for you to be able to interact with other equals and feel what you're doing constantly multiplying, instead of it all always hinging on your work. As you said, RL calls.

Just an offer. And yes I am serious, I ran the largest legit L2 site in the western world (L2 Stratics) all for free because I loved doing it. And we had at our peak over 43.000 unique visitors daily.
No, they don't pay me. I'm 100% volunteer. I personally could care less about page hits. I enjoy featuring player interviews and (for example) my Tamoh Blogs...why? Because if I can make ONE person smile or help ONE person with a quest or game tips, that is worth more than all the status and page hits and pay any day.

I'd appreciate it if you stop downplaying our site. I know it has a buttload of work to be done. We are working on it. We are not going to drop it just because it takes work. We are trying to obtain all of our information in a 100% legit fashion, and that takes time. Besides as I've said quite a few times already, I am personally more proud of the interviews that we do more than anything. It's a thrill to me to help give regular players their spotlight in the community. We're not about competing with this site or that for popularity. And I personally am not going to jump ship just because there's something out there that is supposedly shinier. No thanks.

And with that, I move on from this thread. I've said what needs to be said and my opinion on the matter will not be swayed.
I appreciate any site that features L2 info and have enjoyed many vault features. I just want to thank all those who volunteer to provide these sites, and if they aren't perfect they still provide great info and features. The adventures of Tamoh are a fun read and really give a cool peek into the world of L2 :) A little work on the site navigation would pay off in more repeat visitors I think

Vault does have a lot of the quest guides, the one thing I would like to see is just a simple page showing the name, level, npc and rewards linking to the guides so we can peruse which quests we might like to do at various levels.

I know other sites have this but I don't think they have all the quests that are in game now and up to date guides. Darn arktic.net did have most but they are gone :/

Anyway good job everyone who works on L2 sites! I appreciate it and I know many others do too :)
Because if I can make ONE person smile or help ONE person with a quest or game tips, that is worth more than all the status and page hits and pay any day.

Boy, if I haven't heard this a billion times. Is that actually true, though? Surely you could find a better use for such energy than to make just one person in some online game smile? Heck, run out to the street and make a funny face at some kid... it'd be a heck of a lot quicker.

The problem with L2 Vault is this... the lack of real desire (and no doubt time) from the management to control what's being done with the website. I'm not looking to insult anyone, but when I hear stories about how all these volunteers are running amok, uploading tons of quest guides and hosting images on an off-site server, I can't do anything but shrug.

If a site manager really cares about the site they're working for, they'd put a little more effort into making sure that the content being posted is top-rate. If someone with poor English is submitting quest guides, why make everyone who needs to refer to them squint their eyes in order to figure out what's being said? Guides and content in general should be proof-read, and above all, images should be hosted on the same server as the website. If that was done from the get-go like it should have been, there would be no problem (and trust me, I once had to go through 200+ forum spam posts manually deleting each one, so I know what tedium is like and certainly don't envy Jayla16).

Either way, I'm glad you're happy with what you're doing, and I give kudos with regards to your focus on unique content. Many people don't even think twice about trying to create something truly unique, so it's nice to see. I should mention that I have a serious sore spot for some of the larger gaming networks out there, as I've worked for a few (Vault included). I've since seen through the bull, and some of that might rub out in my comments.

All I was asking was why at Vault? You could do that just as well, if not better somewhere else.

And you know, the page hits ( I was talking about unique visitors) is the amount of players you get out to, the more players, the more players you make happy...and I'd rather have 1000 players smiling and happy, than just seeing 2 players smiling and happy.

I'd appreciate it if you stop downplaying our site.

I am not downplaying your site at all. I was giving you a serious offer. What has been created at Vault is because of your hard work, I was saying there wasn't anything keeping you from continueing that great work elsewhere together with others who seek the same as you.

And I personally am not going to jump ship just because there's something out there that is supposedly shinier. No thanks.

You could still continue to do all your interviews, all your current work. And again, it was just an offer. Why should someone work for Vault, when you say that doing something better doesn't matter? Then the same holds true for those who just contribute for their clan and don't want to work for Vault.

It was something for you to think about, not for you to get all defensive about, nothing I said is invalidating any of the great work you've done...and may I just point out in the end, that I have been praising you on several occasions, yet you have yet to say even the slightest nice thing about me or our work.
I know other sites have this but I don't think they have all the quests that are in game now and up to date guides.

EOGamer has the largest and most up to date quest guide collection, just about all of them are updated to Gracia 2, with more updates being added, as its a wiki and therefor easily added by the community as well as things are released.

All of this have been made possible by the same people who brought you the massive Lineage 2 Stratics Quest Database and the Lineage 2 Stratics Wiki. (Largest L2 Wiki ever).

So head on over. I know the navigation can be confusing in the beginning, but give it time and with the new cache system, the wiki pages should load pretty fast from our dedicated server system. :)
You, as well known hater of russian players just banned all russian IP`s and thats all.
How come neither of my Russian IPs got banned then?

LOL

You are right about the IPs, but that was only temporary until I could get the hotlink prevention up and running.

No IPs are banned at my site at the moment.

And no I don't hate Russian players, I did what I did with the IPs because my host threatened me to close down my site permanently if I didn't reduce the bandwidth usage within a certain time.

The ones that made the guides should had known better than hotlinking images "stealing" bandwidth from other sites instead of saving each and every icon they need on their computer and upload them to photobucket or other image hosting services.
So don't blame me that their guides now are messed up, it their own **** fault.
If they had asked for a set of icons then I would gladly had ziped them into one file and e-mailed them to that person.

If you still think that I'm being an then give me 300$ and I will upgrade to another host that allows allot more bandwidth usage.

oh and about the visitors that you talk about:

none of the forums that hotlinked to me even said a word where those images where taken from and they almost never gave me any visitors at all except for several thousand hits everyday.

even now that I have disabled hotlinking, every hit from the leaching sites generate traffic, so my 4k*4k image stays until all the links are gone.

In July I had over 3x more bandwidth usage (over 95GB) than what my host allows me to use, just to give you an idea of how bad hotlinking is.
All I was asking was why at Vault? You could do that just as well, if not better somewhere else.

Sorry in advance for not responding to your entire posting (I'm at work and shouldn't really be on here ;). Don't take that as discrediting what you were saying, but I wanted to just take a quick second to answer about this one thing.

First off, take your preying hands away from mah Tamoh **** it! ;)

Second... With all the work that has already been invested (and it's been a hell of a lot), I'm sure it's easily understood why someone would be reluctant to leave and head somewhere. The top reason I could see for them doing so would be a) a bad experience at current position or b) incentive or $$ at the offered position. Without either a or b, any typical individual would stay where their hard work has been invested. Or so I would imagine.
Did he tried first to contact those portal owners before making 5kX5k pix gifs, before calling them thiefs and talking about "they will complain". No he just silently cut off boards who make 22k and 8k hits for his site each day. Nice and friendly way to do things.

LOL... get lost bro, nobody wil support your cause. If it was me i would make it a lot worse to the thieves.

Did they try to contact me first before starting to steal my bandwidth? NO

Did the silently start to steal my bandwidth? YES

So why the hell should I contact them? Why shouldn't I silently pay them back for all the work they just gave me by hotlinking virtually every image that I got on my site?

Heck...some websites even hotlinked some elements from my menu systems into their site...

I could serve them a few GB in size files making their site take ages to load.
