lineage2's gracia final gameguard was updated so that host's file cannot be edited in order to connect to a private server.
That made players from private servers not able to connect to their server and their only option is something like "not retail,no l2"
My congratulations for that strategy because lineage 2 retail servers thanks to that are getting more players(noticed that in gludio today)

I have no experience with this but if they were able to do it then congrats; however, it's safe to say that this won't bring more people to retail. Perhaps you noticed an increase in people logged in because it's the weekend (and a holiday weekend at that, within the United States).

Epic fail, imo. Using the hosts file to redirect L2 launcher is for very lasy server admins only. The private server which forum I used to read to laugh at stopped requiring hosts file changes like 3 years ago.
Sorry but there's no way to prevent players from modifying the client or their network to connect to a private server. The way Blizzard does it is by shutting down private servers with their team of lawyers.
Even if the GM's searched it's not like they have the legal power to shut anyone down. It's a whole legal process that many times involves taking people to court. It gets even messier when people are overseas. GM's are game masters... not lawyers :P

There are client mods that let you run lineage on the official servers without gameguard. Google it.
They haven't stopped anyone.
Like I said, it takes a team of lawyers, not a team of GMs.
They need a team of lawyers, and a big BIG bag of money. The second part is why blizzard can do it and NCSoft cannot.

because i've seen a more steady reduction in player base ever since they released beta testing of that new fangled wow breed Aion game...

Actully since the precedent has already been set by Blizzard it probably wouldn't cost them much more than their retaining costs to have the servers shut down. All they have to do is prove they are making moeny and then they would have the operators by their balls.
Plus they would even be able to collect a bunch of money form the operators due to them profitting off of their Intellectual Property (and yes people "donating" to help keep the server running is still making a profit off of it).
Of course the smart thing ot do would be to go aftr them only 1 at a time so that the operators won't be able to pool their money together to get a really high priced lawyer. Plus when a few sites start gettign taken down and large fines/setttlements are slapped on the operators almost all the rest will drop out themselves so as not to get hit.
