I quit playing L II a few years ago and the other day I woke up to three emails telling me my password had been reset by such and such IP address, not mine. I immediately went to customer support to report that it wasn't me that did the reset and then changed my passwords. I also downloaded the game to see if my toons were stripped, I do care even though I haven't played in so long. Finally got to log in and only two of my 6 toons were stripped of gear and weapons, of course the rest have crap so I guess they weren't worth bothering with.
When I was looking into my account info I saw that I was charged for reactivation on November 24th 09, again unauthorized, yea I know it sucks that I missed seeing it on my bank statement and only caught it three months later, heck I could have been at least playing all this time.
Just now I noticed on the news page it says this:

It appears that nc soft reactivated my account without my permission. I couldn't figure out why if a hacker was able to reactive my account back in Nov to get to my game then why didn't I get an email saying my password was messed with? I surely didn't get any emails saying NC Soft was going to reactivate and I needed to take action to stop it.
I've since removed my payment information, something I should have done a long time ago.
I guess I'm posting this message to see if anybody else had this happen and to serve as a warning to others that if you cancel your payments make sure to remove the payment info because if it's still there either nc soft or a hacker can re-activate.
I'm trying to get support to help me with this but they're slower than molasses.

I wanted to note that the reactivation events we do as promotions do not reactivate the billing on an account. These events make all accounts in good standing "playable" for a predetermined amount of time. I hope this clarifies the reactivation period in November for you. :)

If this person hasn't played for years, it is very unlikely that a keylogger/trojan was the reason for the hacking.
If the accounts had not been reactivated by ncsoft, he probably wouldn't have been hacked. I would strongly suggest that you not reactivate any accounts without peoples knowledge or permission like that promotion again. You could send an email allowing the inactive people to reactivate their own account if they choose to do so. Imo, you owe him for the months he was billed.
Another thing that seems very insecure to me it having the forum login and password the same as the game. We have all heard of sites being hacked, big sites with credit card info and such..
More likely this is some kind of security problem on the nc side, as happened some years ago where a hacker got ahold of everyone's login info and nc had to reset everyone's password and made us prove our accounts to be able to assign new passwords to get back in game. Some couldn't ever get it back due to some of the info required being lost as will happen after some years with computers dieing and such. Those people are gone and there were many :(
Rumor mill has it that thousands of Aion players were hacked. Did they ever figure out how that happened?
Other games I have played backtracked the gear, took it back and reimbursed the person that bought it (if legit) and returned the original gear to the person who was hacked, as long as it didn't involve account sharing (easy to pick up from logs). A lot of work yes, but you lose less players...
Funny how nc wants to just go by their own little rules and not think out the overall effect. Example, I bought a 4th anniversary box of L2 for a 3rd account, didn't have time to use it for awhile so I applied the free month to one of my other accounts. Later I tried to make the 3rd account with it but it said the code was already used. I sent a support ticket and explained with a few back and forths, but was told sorry, already used. They didn't really look at the big picture where I would be paying $15 a month probably for years for the 3rd account, so that little hard and fast rule cost nc bigtime. No, I'm stubborn and will not buy another box or code :p A little exception here and there should be possible lol

Then can you explain the timing of the charge and re activations and the fact that I didn't authorize the charge nor did I get an email saying somebody reset my password? It makes no sense.

fact is fact ppl loosing gear and U guys from support replace top gear with a common grade stuff..

there is an unbeleiveable number of people that are reporting the stripping of their accounts very recently

you have any idea how many countless people do not post here, let alone even comprehend that such a forum excists or how to use it that play the game?
You hear and see the results of these in game...
Worst experience for a clan is when a officer logs in says some really cryptic things and then proceeds to start booting people OR start wars OR bad mouthing various people, usually followed by either a few minutes to a few hours later the real owner getting on and asking wtf just happened to all their things

its proved again .. A toon was hacked before and stripped ... Couple days later some1 was shouting the stuff ( true or not, nobody knows ) that other guy lost, they temp ban the hacked toon for investigate.
Couple days later, hacked toon back ingame fully geared with his own armor/weapon.
A month ago a friend got hacked .. And ncsoft just gave him common s duals, couple s grade armor and the rest u dont want to know.
Theyr explenation .. They couldnt track everything where it went ... Imho ... Bs :(

One of the majpr Aion fan site was hacked sometimes ago, i believe the hackers then use the information and emailed the players with phish emails. Some people I know did not check the emails or the link, and even the web site it directed you to, and typed in their info.... You know what happened next...

When the forum changed to use the game account login info it opened up a security hole big enough for Antharas to stroll through.

If you were to log into your master account on the NC account management page you're using a plain text username and password which could be captured just as easily as your game account when logging into the forums. Both actually send the username and password as encrypted SSL.
Specifically 128bit, PKCS #1 SHA-1 With RSA Encryption.
So unless you have a keylogger on your machine (which is no fault of NC's) entering your password on this site will probably not result in someone else logging into your account.

He works with computers all day but refuses to do online banking, direct deposit or use a debit card because he knows nothing is completely safe but paper and pen.

I didn't say that NC can't get hacked, what I said is that entering your password on the boards.lineage2.com URL is no different to entering your password at the in-game login screen. In fact, there's no SSL indication on the in-game login screen so I personally trust the forums more than the game client.
Both can be intercepted just the same, however SSL is somewhat harder to decrypt and you can be sure that anyone who can decrypt it is unlikely to care about a computer game password.
The breach in NC was probably nothing to do with their forums so is completely irrelevant.
that is why one shall not - share acct, sell **** and then recall, lend it to clan mate or 'friend', get power level service, or go to adena site nad buy adena.
