Right now I've been playing two characters. I have a DE Assassin headed towards AW. And I also have a LE Knight headed towards SwS. Are either of these a bad first choice? I prefer melee over any sort of caster. From what I've read if I go AW I'll be solo quite often. And if I go SwS (support class) I won't be useful to a guild until 78+ due to the newbie buffs. Maybe I should go BD as they can solo a bit easier? Should I even go support at this time?
A lot of the data that I've found is quite dated, so any input is appreciated.
actualy a sws is usefull at lowlvls but only if u have a clan that helps u :P , sws are very needed at aoe partys in places like staksto and other hardcore places.
well for solo bd are the best for sure .. but if u dont have a buffer when u get lvl 76 u wont be able to lvl in good solo places.
the good thing about bd is that he uses 2 swords and have a good attk speed with his dances (warrior ,fire , fury) plus when u get lvl 74 u get VR dance wich is realy good for meele xping
u can also make tyrant and titan , those can solo to 76 easy with noob buffs.. they are the best demenge dealers mixed with tanks against mobs :P but.. like i said , after lvl 75(asa u get lvl76) u dont have noob buffs so u'll need a buffer or a clan that helps u ^^
true.. sws are better and unlike with other support, your songs will always stack to other buffs, so even if you're exactly 19lvls lower that your party's max, you'll still be welcomed and useful for their exp...

There aren't many really awful choices as a first intro to the game. You really can't miss by far (though opinions will vary a lot--lol).
My question would be "why support" in the first place? Are you playing with a number of friends or hoping you'll get picked up easier into groups with strangers?
Because there aren't many pickup groups at this point (really).
I would probably suggest picking the stand alone classes at first (you do have 7 slots).
The top melee, the summoner (which is a bit more complicated as a first choice I think), the nuker.
Someone will say "warlord" (human warrior) and someone will tell you to play an orc mystic. Sure.
Opinions and tastes differ. But what you want is quick kills--not because it's fast exp, but because it's generally cheaper in the early rounds.
A BD is a fine class, but it eats soulshots compared to an Orc Destroyer.
An archer can deal some significant damage, after you level it for a month solo as a dagger that can't kill for **** (as far as efficiency goes).
Nukers levels fast and cheap and fairly efficiently through 61. They click once or twice and *poof*, stuff dies. Their gear is a bit cheaper too (heavy armor is usually more expensive than robes through 76).
I'd say nuker, dagger, heavy orc melee as a true first toon. Just my opinion.
In L2 "first toon" should be also your last toon (reroll a lot if you want to never have a high level char and never see interesting things this game has to offer).
That said I advice you to go support, especially as a casual player. Mainly for the reason suppport chars are nerf-proof and always needed. Picking SWS or BD, you can expect that in a year or two, your char will still fulfill the same role as today, and still will have no competition.
In opposition to what most people on these boards will tell you, L2 is a massive multiplayer game and it is not meant to solo with bunch of boxes.
It doesn't matter if you start alone or with friends. Not later than lvl 78 lvl (which is ca 5 months) you will need to find yourself a group of people to play with. And this is *far* easier as a support.
Especially as an SWS, cause there are only few of them, and they're needed in every group (there are some support chars that need only specific groups, like OL, summoners or to certain extent PP - and by coincidence these supports ar far less popular than the others - make your own conclusion).
Also as a support player you get additional bonus of that people will not care about your level and gear as long as you meet minimal level requirement to enter hunting spot of their choose.
Playing DD after 78 lvl be prepared to hear often "you're too low" (by which they mean "not 81" or even "not 83") or too crappy gear ("only one boss jewel?"). Also be prepared that your now-decent class will become obsolete when you reach higher level.
Imo if you want to be succesful as DD (and play legit), you need to be very focused, prepared for spending a lot of time on making money and prepared for a lot of solo.
On the other hand, support class allows you to find a good group without having p imped out char. And your choose of groups is not narrowed by the type of dd you play - you fit everywhere.
To sum it up, I strongly advice you to stay with your SWS. And belive me, you will appreciate my advice on higher levels.
I for myself am happy reroller (archer->cardi) and only it makes me cry IRL when I think, that back when i was starting L2 I had idea to make SWS. But I discarded it in favor of an archer - not without "help" of people telling me to "play what you like". But I was noob back then, and you don't have to repeat my mistakes ;)
i would say BH, it was my first toon (named nuku) (and financially glad about it), but that was back in open beta where the class was very much appreciated still and wanted in clans.
Well depends, the AW will rock in pvp if you get it high enough, but you will solo alot more then a SwM.
A Sws is needed allways, when as all their songs stack with Newbie buffs in this case they are still wanted.
A Sws can ask for the princess hand and half the kingdom from certain clans if he like, they are that wanted and rare in end game :)
I'm going to stick with the SwS. I don't plan on botting or ebay'ing anything. So the fact that I can be of use to a guild with lower levels and gear is a big plus. Is there a guide to good leveling spots? The few good guides I've found have also been very dated. I need from 25+. Thanks again.

open map info and click hunting zone tab, sort by lvl... any "field" type area around your lvl should be fine w/ newbie buff...
orc barracks then gorgan flower garden then the area around hardin's should get you to 40 easiliy.
if you luck into some ok gear can try cata/necro for better $
Id go with either Elf, human, or Kamael classes. Id be a human Paladin (eventually), Eva's knight for elves (eventually), and a kamael Judicator (eventually)

Well adena will probably not be a issue, becuse you are not really a DD or a Tank just a buffer that do some extra damage to the party.
So people wouldent care if you come in dirty rags, swinging a wooden stick for all they care, as long as you sing for them :)

Until you get into an elitist party and everyone hitting a mob is required to have AQ/Baium, lulz.

I'm probably not the elitist party type anymore. Those days are long gone. Although I miss the days of UO, AC, EQ and such. I had lots of time to play back in my Army days. Heck I even played the hell out of Shadowbane. LOL. Now, I've got my girl, a child, and racing (mountain bikes and endurance sports - 50/100 mile runs) to keep me busy.
L2 is what I plan to do to unwind and relax in the evenings after they go to bed. I figure playing support will allow me to see parts of the game I wouldn't otherwise see. Thanks again for the feeback everyone. I'm sure I'll have other questions as I haven't started looking for a clan yet.
