I always hear this canned response from GM's but it cannot be controlled in game. A scammer is exploiting the game but using names that look a like in pink text to scam people out of gear.
There is no way to deal with in game since the person is anonymous and does not do it on their tagged or main toon.
I asked my petition be sent to GM Pomono or HGM Will so you finally changed the policy on this.
If the use a fake name for the sole purpose of stealing gear and never leveling that toon, why shouldn't they be banned? They are exploiting the flaws in the game to make a real life profit?
NA can start making their own policies I do not think you need permission from Korean to change how you handle incidents such at this.
I had someone try and scam me using my 2 box's name xD
Ported her out of town, then someone came running in "Hi! Me is the person you were just here with! You clanny! Let me borrow sum gear plx!"
Was quite funny. I simply said "Woah! This is incredible, my 2 box is talking to me!...Too bad you chose to try and scam me using one of my character's names...good try tho."
made my day :P

I may be naive and such but why just NCSoft don't change the font so the letters *I* and *l* as well as the combo *rn" and *m* to be not identical? This seems a no-brainer for me.
You can protect yourself effectively from this scam (by using yoru brains) several ways. For example:
1. Read the name carefully.
2. Talk in clan chat. If they pretend to be a clannie and don't reply, then you know.
3. Don't lend any gear. No exceptions.
I agree with the NCSoft policy that losses from name scams are they player's fault, not NCSoft's. It is a harsh world, true, but taking reasonable precautions will adequately protect you therefore you are responsible for your own protection.
Just like in the 'real world' where you should never sign a document without reading and understanding it all.

Yeah, but scamming in the real world is also illegal such as identity theft. Also in most other mmorpg's I have played if a player is scammed, then the scammer is banned.
This is a difference between L2 and most games. This difference is also something which makes L2 unique.
Lineage2 is a harsher world, it certainly isn't for everyone. To succeed HONESTLY* in Lineage2 you have to be smart, tough, patient and resiliant. That is why L2 has both a committed following and a small following. Committed because it takes a special person to make it in a tough game world. Small because, well the same reason, there are not a lot of these special people.
The real world tends to work the same way, the best people get ahead. Cheaters get ahead in the short run, then fail. Lazy people fail. Slackers fail. Low ability people fail. Smart, persistent hard working people succeed.
* Re: "HONESTLY" Anyone who breaks the EULA does so because they are not good enough to do it honestly, therefore any accomplishments, gear or other recognition achieved by a botter, walker, adena buyer or other form of cheater means nothing. By cheating they proclaim to the world that they are too weak to do it the way it was intended to be done, only honest players count.

That was a great speech. It might have worked on me when I was a kid. The truth is the lieing, cheating, and complete jerks are the ones who get ahead. That is how it works both in this game and in the real world. Took me a long time to learn this. I think it finally hit me in the head when I got fired because my boss had been told that I might replace his job. So he seperated the solution from the problem in my security solution to make the medical center HIPAA compliant to make it look like I was complaining. Now the place is out of business because he couldn't administrate it properly.
Long story short, top business guys are real jerks, and top clans in this game are real jerks. I play a game to get away from the real world so it can be something I can enjoy, not to mimic the real world.
* Re: "HONESTLY" Anyone who breaks the EULA does so because they are not good enough to do it honestly.tbh, that same EULA has traps honest players walk into, like i did once, for being too honest or too helpful...
It's not only the cheaters that get caught by the EULA.

A scammer is not exploiting the game. He is exploiting your stupidity. You can ALWAYS tell the difference between a fake and real name if you actually LOOK at it. There is no exploit to make a identical copy of a name.

combine 1-3
1. Don't be dumb

There's a lot of grinding, a LOT. but that doesn't make the world harsh.
You can play the game in a stupid way (only newbie buffs, farming everything yourself etc.) and argue the game is hard, but if you are smart about it the game world is not harsh at all.
And secondly, a lot of the people you see cheating have been legit for a long long time, the reason they cheat is because you can't keep up with people who do it with just the tools given to you in the standard L2 client.
NCSoft has a strict policy on 3rd party programs, except they barely enforce it at all, so it's a virtually risk-free endeavor to cheat, making it an attractive decision on a purely logical level. The only thing that stops the rest of us is a sense of pride.
What happens if we instead ban all the ppl stupid enough to just hand off their gear?
the game shuts down due to low population
Name scam is player controlled. But you are all smart players and capable of making yourself scam proof, so don't fill us in on what you plan on doing. We don't need to know what you and your friends are gonna do about scammers. By filling us in on what your clan and friends are doing about scammers. You're filling in those players who read the forums and go out of their way to scam, on what your going to do. Don't trust anyone not in your own clan. If a clannie scams you then kick the clannie out and report them.
If it was player controlled then would could identify the person main and pk them.
However since they circumvent game rules in order to scam which cannot be controlled since its traded off to a toon we do not know about then it cannot be controlled in game.
Also they exploit a text issue with the font to scam which is exploiting a game design which is directly against EULA, maybe this is NCSoft's problem they just do not care enough about what their customers actually want.

and falling for these scams is the player's fault. L2's economy and market places are much like the real world. You have over priced items. You have regularly priced items. You have underpriced items that are a good buy. And you have items that are mis-marked and/or scams. You also have the ability to barter and trade with other people. It is not breaking the EULA to attempt to scam another player, as long as that doesn't involve hacking their account or logging into their account and taking everything. You as the player have the ability to look at the name, look at the item, talk to your "supposed" friend on ventrillo or teamspeak, ask them in clan chat if its them, and the ability to say "log on MSN so i know its you before i trade".
If you walk into a store and buy an item, but didnt read the fine print on the box correctly or at all (not looking closely at a name in game), is it the stores fault? The manufacturers fault? No, it is simply your fault. What if you go into a store and buy an item without researching anything about that item, and it has a no returns policy, and you buy it anyways (scam shop), and it doesn't perform as you want, is it then the stores fault? How about the manufacturers fault? No and no again.
My point is, you as the player have the right to demand these simple things such as voice verification in ventrillo, type communication in MSN or clan chat, or simple saying no. It is in no way NCsofts place to control these things, as they are real world issues in the real worlds economy that have found their way into a games economy.
Be smart and double check what you buy every single time you're buying something. Double check a name when trading items. Talk over ventrillo or some type of communication device outside of the game. If you get scammed by one of these types fo scams, then you only have yourself to blame, no one else.
EDIT: also, NCsoft makes art changes to items of that look alike. Remember red gems? How about the invisible soul crystal glitch that allowed people to secretly add any amount of money to a package store without the player visibly seeing it? All major scam shop problems are gradually fixed in new updates, so saying NCsoft doesnt care about them is bogus, but as someone else said, there are much bigger problems for them to focus their time on.
Most of the points have been covered but a fast summary.....
Game is fine as it is. No matter what changes are made there will always be scam opportunities. NC Soft has more then enough to deal with concerning bugs, game updates, hacked accounts, etc. It is each player's responsibility to ensure they manage their own accounts properly. A few easy steps we all can take to ensure we don't get scammed whether by "name scam", or buying/selling items:
- Take 60 seconds minimum to perform a transaction. Closely examine each letter of the name, or the actual item and description in a buy shop. Many scams occur because the victim is simply going to fast.
- Perform all trades where you are giving items for nothing in ventrilo or teamspeak where you are actually speaking to your friend/clanmate and can ask "is this you I am trading with?" MSN is another alternative.
- Those who work hard for their items by making sacrafices in game tend to value those items and not fall for scams. Those who acquire the items easily by buying adena or other less honest means didn't have to work hard for the item, don't value them as much, and tend to fall for scams with a lot higher frequency. There is no hard and fast rule but the reality is, this last statement tends to be true.
Summary...stop complaining about the game and adjust to the way things are. There will ALWAYS be things to complain about.
