We facing a second merge soon and I really would like to suggest/see a change in the payment system since the costs for maintaining less servers will be, I belive, a lot less then now for n reasons.
In Aion we the time we pay to play is only consumed while we're online.. I would **** love to see that in L2.
Posting here instead of suggestions because this is not a gameplay suggestion.

Same friend that plays Aion and told me that the way they charge Aion was like that, told me today it isnt like that lol. My bad.
But anyway.. would be **** nice for it to be like that. It's a lot more attractive to new and old players.

Even if Aion does not have that system in NA/EU, who cares, it was a suggestion and I think a good one. Make bots pay more, reduce the burden on legits, that is a wonderful idea. Playing with vita 0 means you need to spend more time, farming with 9 bot party is also gonna cost more, etc.
I wholeheartedly subscribe to this idea, even tho would make some problems for poor legits too, unless it will be a balanced approach, like make it for 4-5 hours a day cost about the same as now. More than this, either you are crazy for the game and will pay nevertheless, or you are a bot and same will apply. Let the obsessed subsidise the price for the casual players so we can hook more ppl to l2 :P .

Counter-argument: it will make the game seem more dead then it actually is.
People will take any chance they can to log out and save money so you have much less people idling in towns, resting for HP/MP, chatting with friends, crafting, etc.
It creates an incentive to play the game as little as possible.
A flat rate that would allow shops and peace zone idling and a fee for getting out hunting charged on time.
Seems too complicated, perhaps wont be implemented.

One part of game i always enjoyed the most is giran's market,its a ''shop therapy'' for me :)
so i have to agree with you,players are allready getting so few from current NA servers,they would immediately logged off after finishing xp/oly/raid but L2 needs high population from various lvls to be online to make game work.
If the economic crisis strike that bad,Ru model seems to work very well,ensure server is fulled with people with free-to-play and when they realise they do love the game they can pay for a bit higher xp/drop rates.
If no Ru model,then i expect at least many-many events with goodies :)
