I rename this thread the official "cats are awesome" thread! Please post cats pictures!! oh, you can also discuss about names here if you want....
------
Let's say I re-name my lvl 78 dorf with a cool new name. I am 100% certain that name does not belong an active player because I never seen that name in game, ever. However, the name was taken, probably by a box or mule. Is it possbile that a few days later, some lvl 15 dorf files a petition wants his name back, then my dorf gets renamed "namechange12345?" ty
Even if you have never seen the name before, have you checked all the servers merging to see if that name exists on any of them???
And if they were banned, or a bot toon, I don't think they would care if there name was namechange1232 to take the time to fill out a petition.
I think the only way you have claim of the name is if your toon had that same name on the old server. I would think if somoen had the name and you changed to it, you would deserve to lose it if they petition.
The name-stealing appeals process is to prevent abuse of the "free" name-changes that some players will be prompted for.
Name-stealing doesn't mean that you maliciously tried to steal another player's name on purpose; it could have happened innocently. Either way, players who had a certain name before the merge will have more right to reclaim it after the merge, more right than someone who is just taking advantage of the opportunity to rename their character.
Could someone please explain to me the concept of "name griefing" as I have never heard of the concept (griefing to me was always used in the context of repeat killing of one person - or killing people on respawn points in other games)?
Samuel has that name now and i randomly rename one of my toons Samuel and he wants it back he simply has to say i was grieved and gets his name back cause he was too slow?
and then what i have to choose again? how many name changes til you let us keep one? and how long do people have to complain?
If somebody is using all the chars he named the same like you he hasn't actually stolen anything from you. He might say that you stole the name he is using on a number of servers.
But if he has just created characters with the same name as yours and he has never played them then ... they'll get deleted anyway.
I think they want to say that the name conflict resolution process has a hole. And if someone uses that hole (intentionally or not, knowingly or not) to get a name of another player, that other player may request his name back.
Unfortunately, there is no way for those "other" players to know if their name was taken because of the process hole, or because of the "proper" resolution of the naming conflict, so NCsoft should expect that every name conflict victim will petition them.
So, if you were forced to take another name by the name resolution process, there is no guarantee that it will be your final name on the server.
unless your like me and had lvl1 alts on all servers blocking my fav names and someone tries to use the hole to claim one of those names cause then yes NC Soft will have to rectify the situation as their logs can without a doubt prove my "first" claim

what happens if your the first person to get on your char select screen , can u change ur name due to name conflict even tho your the first person with the same name on char select screen,
so if u dont want to claim your old name and u wanna change it can that be done ?
or what happens if the first person didnt claim your name and ur the 2nd ,
will u be stuck with your old name or can u change it to a new name too ?

Was ist los!
Cheezeburger ich haben!
Yes you can change it, it will show your name with a numeral after it and you can then change it.
In the character selection screen, you see that your character has a number at the end of their name which was not there before the merge. This means that you have a character name conflict. If you don't have a new number at the end of your name, you're fine, and you can log into the game.
When you select a character that has a name conflict, a message box will pop up explaining that there is a character name overlap. It says "Please enter a new name for your character."
You can enter in your original character name! This will check and see if the name is still available.
If you are the first person to request that name, you will get it! Then you can log in with that name.
Its epic fail...
I can't take my lotek name...
btw. I was the only one who had 1lv char with lotek nickname on every euro server
I made that chars @ 1st servers days and didnt log in on them.
I sent mail to "lotek" char on new Naia server so somebody stole it.
Is there any chance to get it back ? If not I definetly quit... ><
Yes, you might be able to get it back. You'll need to write a support ticket, and then the GMs can examine who the other 'lotek' is and see who has the most rights to the name.
Players who had a certain name before the merge will have more right to reclaim it after the merge, more right than someone who is just taking advantage of the opportunity to rename their character.
Btw, if you have a toon named Sauron or DarthVader please don't come here QQ'ing that someone stole your original idea... Now if your name is truly original then you will have a case and most likely if you been using the name for some time (years!) you are likely to get it back.
i noticed that, someone made my name on all other na servers lol
That happened to me, too. Actually, they made my name on all servers, including Euro. Didn't think it was that good a name, to be honest. Oh well, life goes on.
Wonder if I can convince the GM's to allow me a one time exception? I always wanted the name "Gran Kain." Hey, I'll get more use out of it than the NPC, might as well let me have it. :D

You can change your name to anything you like, as long as the name hasn't already been taken.
For example, let's suppose that your character's original name was "Bubba." If there was a naming conflict, when you log in you will see your character with a name "Bubba29" or some other number at the end of your name. Select the character and a window will appear prompting you to change the name.
Note: you are not changing the "Bubba" name, you are changing the "Bubba29" name. You can try any name that you want at that juncture. If you would like to keep the name "Bubba," try entering it. However, if you want a new name entirely, enter the new name instead. You are not obligated to keep your old, original name.
If no one else has claimed the name that you want, you will be able to log in. But if someone else beat you to the punch, you will be prompted to try another name. You will not be able to log in until the character has been named.

Sace, it's probably best to further define exactly how that "right" is established.
I suggest that the old naming conventions should apply as though the server was one all along. In short, the named character with the most seniority (according to creation date, not levels or anything else) should have chief rights to a name. (The seniority is not attached to the character, but the name...for those of you who wonder how this applies in light of the paid renaming service.)
Will this work for everyone? Probably not. And I feel sorry for any of you who started this game after some of the Prelude/C1 folks, and have built up a nice history and community rep for yourselves, but have to change your name anyway, because someone more senior than you decided to activate his or her account post-merge and claim their name. That's life, I guess.
Too bad it's not American professional sports where players barter for identity when older players, who have an established history and affinity for a given number, are moved to a new team where that number is taken by another player.
Yes, I'd like to know how will those 'rights' be established... and whether that character is currently active. I won't like losing my Shadowdancer name if that happens, as I stayed up all night to get it (sucks to live on the other side of the world from server locations! But I adapted to that...).
I think though, if this is a case of name griefing and simply ganking the name with a lowbie toon, have a look at how high level the characters with the 'stolen' name is. Maybe that will help determine if it's name griefing.
Still seems rather unfair though, given that before it was a matter of 'well, if you got it first, then, that's how it goes.'
Despite how unfair that seems, I can still see the other side of the issue and how it can be name 'theft.'
All the same, I wonder how this 'right' will be determined. I hope it isn't simply based on 'wahhh someone stole my naaaaaame' and they'll simply act on the complaint. It doesn't seem fair to the person who had the name in a different server.
