All you hear these days from peeps "just buy new computer and you issue will go away". Sounds like Microsoft's answer to everything.
I don't think it's (primarily) a hardware issue, on either side. I'm playing on a computer that I built about a month ago (AMD Phenom II X6 1090T, 16 GB Ram, ATI HD9850) and it's laggy out soloing EXPing.
I'd place my money on an game engine that is just showing its age.

well rams good and all but its really about read/write data you want to play l2 faster you get SSD hard drives
To be honest if the game doenst work fluently on up to date PCs (lets say 0,5 year old) something is really bad. Noone should expect NASA computers on clients side.
And such lags which can be felt during massive actions more suggest that ncsoft doesnt have enough connectivity.
Actually they are going more and more steps to push the people off the game. Probably the first company who wants to turn away the customers.

Although I completely agree Lineage II is an extremely large game that would benefit from SSD hard drives, however I don't feel that it should be needed to avoid latency issues within Lineage II. I would also like to state that connection issues can't honestly be the main issue, at least not client side.
Client side hw and connectivity is not the problem, altough I have to agree with Arbunt saying SSD is the way to go to avoid stuttering when you have lots of toons to load up on your screen. I have one myself and just wow!!
The real problem is the server side: they collapsed NA and EU to two servers, x5 and x3-ing population. This means LOTS of connections to handle for the server, and it's the moment to remind players the good rules to avoid server lags: dont toss stuff on the ground if you dont really have to, turn off titles during massive PvP/PvE, avoid useless shouting, unsummon pets/agathions if you dont really need their presence....and the like.
Plus, events that involve summoning always are servers' death because of all those NPCs spawning all over the town and players flooding the server spamming skills and shouts; I think this more or less doubles the data stream toward the server and back.
I can easily guess we'll see lags disappear asa this tiger madness will stop (not that I can call myself innocent for such a sleepy-genocide! ^^).
A problem that wont be solved with event's end, to me, is the massive re-log after server maintenance and sudden crashes like yesterday. People keep opening threads in the tech issues section when they cant relog because getting automatically kicked out, but that's just the expected behaviour when 2-3k players try to relog altogether at the same moment. If bots are around, then it's madness, cause botting programs try to relog again and again and again till they're back on-line and then start flooding the server with their redundant iterations.....KICKING ME OUT RIGHT AFTER 2 MINS I LOGGED IN!!!! >.<
Last note: did they really collapse 5 servers to one and didnt take this kind of events in account for hardware/connectivity upgrades!? XD

I have two SSD drives in a RAID0 configuration. It helps but not entirely. That is also way more than should be expected of a typical user.
Great stuff, Elrohir, I was just thinking of such a set up! =D
Is it fast!? I bet it's like lightspeed!! ^o^
Btw, I've read of something new that sounds like madness: a 120GB SSD in RAID 0 embedded in a PCIEx x1 card....just OMG!!!! XD
But it still costs like 3-400$+, nothing I'd pay for a SSD, not even that fast... =p
SSD helps in loading textures and poligons faster, but that's all. Once everything's loaded up in the RAM, any slow down has to be ascribed to graphic card and CPU.
At times, graphic slow downs can bring to gameplay latency because of desync between local client and server: client is still calculating and drawing old frames while the server is already sending new infos on PC/NPCs' actions/positions.
But this usually doesnt affect games like L2 too much; FPS games mostly suffer of this thing because you constantly need a very precise correspondence between the actual server data about players' status and current drawn frame, otherwise you'd always miss your target.
That's why we euros can play L2 on NA server even with 170-200ms ping time. ^^

LOL
That is right, you are certified to figure out the IOPs of a game you don't program in and have no concept of where their bottlenecks are at or how much they have invested in their server setups.
SSD is not the be all / end all for SQL servers and certainly not up to what the cost per bang is for a game as small as this.
Nope, as any good systems person would tell you, research before you just toss money at a problem or you won't fix the problem. Well, as long as they are not useing a NetApp as their filestore solution, they should have linear results in their spindle count and inner connects...
I can honestly say that it doesn't suck :) I haven't even overclocked yet. It can play Crisis at the highest settings without a hickup but lags on L2 in someplaces mercilessly (and not just in town).
I still think most of the fault is a game engine with more grey hairs than I have.
Actually I kind of enjoyed the lag. I did damage to many players with my bubble before I appeared on thier computers and they killed me lol, was funny as hell to watch the chat. Then again I died a few times to invisible foes on the battle field. works both ways I guess.
i dont really care what ncsoft should do.im not an expert in this mater.......
but i know what i have:lags and dc's,and i will not make any investments for dying game:(
I/O is certainly an issue, if you just watch your HDD led it will tell you the story, however, with large memory of today, 16 GB sould really load all textures in a siege once and for all, and not unload them at first tp to town.
I dont know how game engines work, never researched the problem, but i guess L2 is too agressive in freeing the memory, perhaps having some ppl thinking at the times ppl were DC in Giran because of too many textures and memory leaks.
It is also true textures in L2 are very nice for a game this age and this is what many ppl like here, attention to detail that only oriental ppl can have.
Rainbow chars with poor texture WoW style should never come here, although malgmed...

Lineage 2 just seems to be a horribly optimized game. I have framerate issues, lag issues, and slowdown all the time, just EXPing in the Hunting zones solo. All of my system specs are well above the recommended.
And LOL at people telling anyone that they need a SSD to play Lineage 2 without issues. Lineage 2 is 6 years old, so are WOW and EQ2. WOW and EQ2 run fine on my computer, on a standard SATA drive, yet Lineage 2 runs like ****.
