I've been cruzing abit around the forums and one thing is for certain. To play this game, you need a clan. I am relatively new to this game. I have played it in the past but I have not been able to pick it back up. As this was all years ago I no longer have access to the account and I will be starting again. My friend will be joining me.
I would very much like people to point me in the right direction, on what I should be looking for in a clan (and if any make a suggestion, or an offer?
Or should I just avoid disaster and not play at all? Is there still much talk of cheating and is it still happening?
Curious for thoughts and input.

Gms very active nowdays banning bots/ebayers and we hope they will ban also any pvp programs user.
You will see very few bots in game now.
My advice to you is since you will play with your friend try and make at least 1 support class.There are 2 support classes in extremly high demand for clans/partys ,elven elder and swordsinger,clans also are lf bishop/overlord/wc.You may try a combination like

It's good to hear that they are cracking down on bots. It's what triggered me to come back.
We've both already thought of getting 1 fighter and 1 buffer or support class going. I'd like to hear your suggestions more on SWS. Are they any good in PvP? Will I be able to solo something? What would be the (yet wanted in pvp/pve) duo's we could go for? You have mentioned SWS+EE, yet I don't really feel comfortable with that.
I'd like to pintpoint this out a bit further before I endulge myself ingame, considering I have yet to make up my mind about a character. ;)
I would recommend you to play for a while on a private server and try some classes there before choosing the one u want to stick with here, just choose a really high rate private server to test stuff and decide what you two want to play together, but yes one support and one DD should work pretty nice :)
As for clan, just be patient and you two will find one clan that fits you both :)
A sws (with few buffs)can solo only on green mobs.If you plan to solo as a sws you will need a wolf,together you will do enough dmg.
I proposed the sws because it is the class many partys are missing,so you will find always partys and can enter any clan in the future when you hit 80 with your friend(your friend alone as a warior maybe not : )
About pvp,there's not pvp before 80+.On high lvls sws can pvp very well but never solo,always as a member of a party.Think of sws like a support toon(most of supports arent made to solo)who can do a lot during pvp but always inside a party.On next updates i saw sws gets a new skill that do good dmg,using this you may xp and pvp a lot better solo also.
Any melee class duos nicely with sws exept archer,you can choose whatever you like to play.Even if your friend wants to make a warcryer(who is a buffer),you can duo very well together for xp and make a strong couple to find a good clan(for pvp since you will be both support toons you will need to pvp inside a party always).
The idea of testing in a high rate prive server some classes and then decide what you want to play is very nice.
I don't think I'll be trying out your suggestions of a Lineage 2 Private server. I don't think at all that will give a realistic image of the class as everything will be overly modified.
Also, about the SWS suggestions, I don't feel it will be the right class for me nor my friend. We want to make a little bit more of an impact, not just 2 support players. ;)

Compared to before, they are much fewer :) It is still a long way to go till we can say GMs are doing their job, but they do something, at least, while before they only did a massive ban once a year or something.
Regarding clases and wolf, take into consideration that wolf is leveling much harder in party. They are also relatively cheap, so it is not really worth leveling when you can buy that exp. Asuming you dont have the money to buy, I would go for a destroyer and use that to level the others in aoe party in catas. You will need 3 accounts for 2 ppl tho and i dont know if you can afford that. AoE party in catas will also provide a bit of income. If you want to have dwarf tho, use that to pole and the other account as buffer/healer (EE/SE).
Regarding clans, it depends on what you are looking for. There are some recruiting threads in this forum.
