**** Policy -Items not Back-

General Discussion Started Last reply 34 posts
Hi all , i just want to know if all those that happens and i am seeing are Fair.
Because we are customers

After 2 of my party mates , be scammed
with legal way of play , i mean no share-accounts or different ips of log
And after many and many slow replies from NC company...

The scammer removed all his items , after few ours my mate realised it and made petition
After some hours he took the response bla bla about account verification...
After 3 days the ticket that iccident promoted to higher state...
And after 6 days the answer that items will be back to him...but not a Skull Edge[CD]300
cause the scammer -Sold it- (ofc he will)

After so many days...

So thats my question...on a Scam NC company can't restore 100% the items?
Because a scammed guy...losing his gear...his days that paied for this...his patient..
I think cheap the excuse "The scammer sold it"

p.s. My english sucks , sry :P
I don't understand that this is a scam if the account was logged into and ripped off.

Either it was shared or it was hacked i guess.
Yeah ofc was hacked :(
Yea it is cheap. I saw a Baium the other day for 900 mil and an AQ for 450 mil, I figured they were coming from a hacked account and they wanted to sell it ASAP. Kinda sad when someone loses all that work.
yes it has happen to me twice.. and there is no recourse on the second time.. please read my post

I know its not what you want to hear but it's the sucky truth.
If you guys stop using bots/radares etc. you will stop getting "hacked". It is as simple as that.
Why I have never got hacked? After 5+ years of playing... and I have never used an anti-virus program... Strange isn't it?
We not examine the case that someone scammed , with what way...
I want just to comment the way that someone lost his things...and didn't took all back
Especially for a MidS84 full dagger....it sucks
If it wasnt a shared account, then it was a botted one. Crime doesnt always pay, sometimes you get banned (rarely) sometimes the bot company makes and extra buck or the "crack" you used for the bot software is stealing the passwords...
I will tell again a story that happened some 1 year+ ago.
There was a bot shouting in giran about a new free bot, L2Swift, it was another sucky event like this one, drop based, where bots have the edge and get thousands of items, so the ad was get L2Swift to benefit from event. The site said it is OOG client so I fired up a virtual machine, copied it there and launched with some bogus data and watched it to see where it connects. Needless to say it didnt even try to connect to any l2 ip, but it went straight to an australian IRC server. Every 10 seconds was making an attempt for that.
I had antivirus, i checked it before launching, uploaded on some AV sites, all results were negative.
Also, ******** "cracks" that i checked either install spyware, not connected to l2 or are stealing passwords the same method as above. So, sometimes cheaters get unlucky, but unfortunatelly GMs instead of banning them and the ppl that stole their stuff, they are returning some items...

If they dont return my account to original state, I will never buy another game of ncsoft as well as tell my friends and family to turn off all thier accounts. Make the victim more a victim isnt it so great? I go play other non ncsoft games now

Misleading thread title.

There has only been one instance of hacking in all those years have been around, and it's that one time everybody had to change their password.

There is no account hacking. None. Don't give your info, don't install random things, and don't use a stupid password.

Why I have never got hacked? After 5+ years of playing... and I have never used an anti-virus program... Strange isn't it?Are you really that nieve to think cheating is the only way anyone can get thier account stolen? Yes it greatly improves the chances but it isn't all inclusive. It's not strange you haven't been hacked it's just luck. I played for over 5 years without it happening to me until one day my luck ran out. Just so happens that I was out grinding when I got disconnected. Tried to log back in and got invalid password. Tried to log into master account got invalid password. Notified Support of possible hacked account. THis all happened within a 10 minute period. Still before NcSoft locked the account they managed to steal everything of value from my account. It can happen to you and probably will eventually since its happening more and more to everyone.
don't use a stupid password. Very very true, my mistake not realising I had changed my game password to the same password I used on blah a long time ago. Will never make that mistake again.

I never got hacked either in about 5 years, I use only simple passwords, half the OSes dont have av because i only use for l2 and nothing else. It maybe means legits are more lucky, perhaps bad karma makes the others more prone to "hacking". There is a god, ya know...

actually, i recall reading that in the beginning they did always restore everything, problem is, too many of the same ppl always got "hacked".

there is a reason why there is a thread about account security and what to do to increase it for yourself.

Even if you are following everything on acct security, never share anything or use same pw and are completely legit, and then this happens and NCSOFT gives you just you common gear back. how would you feel? You did follow all the rules, but you yourself gets cheated by the very company that is suppose to protect you?

The odd part is that the "legit" people that I talk to, this never happens, only to those that, well... most people before they log in to a different computer (Mom's Basement, netcafe, friends house, etc) to transmit sensitive information usually do a full scan and do other checks... honestly, if all the people that are saying that they have been "hacked" in L2 and are not saying that their bank accounts as also being emptied ( which clearly is also NCNA fault.....), may not be telling the whole truth.

If you were "hacked" due to NCNA problems then the thing that you should be doing contacting your lawyer...

does not happen.

I dont allways follow everything on account security, I log in many places including trains, hotels, even other countries, I shared accounts, etc, but it never happened to be "hacked".
It is true I dont bot, dont use stolen software, dont download anything from boards that promote cheating, tho...
And, put yourself in the place of NC...
One guy one day comes and says all stuff from his account was stolen. GMs check and see who did that, get the items what are still traceable and give them back. In a few days the same guy asks for items back... That in spite of all the warnings on how to protect your account... Same ppl get "hacked" all the time, perhaps 10-15% at most, why it doesnt happen to the others ? This is a mistery, same as our insane lag in sieges, while ppl that have 4 times our populations have smoother sieges... I wonder why that happens, anyone knows ?

Did anyone hear about this ? It's an article from nakedsecurity.sophos.com that was
linked to in my monthly security newsletter where I work.

Japanese police have arrested two people suspected of stealing virtual characters and goods from players of one of the world's most popular online games.

29-year-old Yu Nishimura, a company employee of Kawasaki, and Kaori Tanaka, 39, a medical claims processor of Adachi Ward, Tokyo, are alleged to have used spyware to steal usernames and passwords from players of the Lineage II Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG).

According to local media reports, the two are said to have advertised a website that offered Lineage players free tools to boost their online characters' combat characteristics.

However, in reality, the tool is alleged to have stolen players' credentials and sent the information back to Nishimura's PC.

According to the claims brought against Nishimura and Tanaka, they were then able to illegally access the Lineage II game through other people's user ids, and sell virtual belongings (such as swords and shields) for real money to other players.

In total, the pair are alleged to have made approximately 1 million yen (approximately US$ 12,000) through the scheme between April and June 2010. Over 100 people's accounts are said to have been compromised.

NC Japan, the maker of "Lineage II - The Chaotic Throne", which says it has lost about 100 million yen fighting hackers who try to break into players' accounts, is reportedly planning to sue the two suspects for compensation.

Kanagawa police are treating the case as a violation of illegal access laws, but it's possible it may be expanded to a more serious charge of business obstruction by fraud because of the financial impact on NC Japan.
Heh, so I was right. Ppl trying to cheat using 3rd party tools get naked. GF !
Edit: No wonder NCJ loses money in this process, as they try to give back the items instead of baning the perpetrators.

Have you ever considered that this guy could accidentaly open some **** in email and got trojan with some keylogger ? No offense but i wish it would happen to each of you who are saying he is botter to be in his position...not everybody is skilled IT freak to know everything... even 50 years old ppl play this game with their grandsons and granddaughters...never forget...offending somebody is easy..to say sorry is harder...
I am very curious if people used 3rd party and if you did, your own fault to get stolen. Now, for these other people that play without any illigal programs, I am sorry for you. Its really sad especially because it took you real effort to get these items, years of work sometimes.

I would advice people to take a complex password for the account, such that they won't be able to change your password. When you notice a problem quickly take another computer and change you gaming password. (don't use the trojan pc)
I agree fully with BerenRuyter. If possible, have a second, maybe old, computer just for accessing your main NC account. If you find you are being hacked on your accounts, don't access your main account from that computer, for fear you got a trojan key-logger somehow. Still, it's a major bother, and not easy to set up, and keep set up.

Also, nothing is truly free. Sure, some websites on the net are free, until the person or persons find other things more interesting. Then it's still free, just not useful. The cost of that sort of free site is you lose it.
But others are much more interested in getting an income. So anything free you run on your computer, or something cheap, and especially something illegal (so you are less likely to complain and admit you were not following the rules) can be viewed as potentially dangerous. You access and use these sorts of things at risk.

Nope, as usual, they were trying to cheat as ANY 3rd party tool is forbidden.
As for the grandparents etc, I know them well, they never got "hacked", none that I knew. I want that ppl which report "hacking" to be scrutinized thoroughly before any other action is taken. If found to be cheating, banned for good. This way GMs wont have to investigate so many "hacking" cases, cheaters will suck it up and buy another train.

How would they lose money by giving back virtual in-game items?
How would they lose money by giving back virtual in-game items?

Giving them back involves GM time, even if they give them dirctly they still have to spend 10 min or so, depending how many items were they, not to mention time to investigate and see if the claim is correct, i.e. someone logged in the account and stole them.
It is undesrtandable why they dont spend more time to check the record of that user, but that in time will spare them a lot of lost time as cheaters wont bother to claim anything back, knowing they will be banned in that case. So money saved for the company in the long run if they see beyond the time spent for investigating cheating.

I really sick of people assuming just because you have been hacked you are a cheater.

Ive been playing close to 7 years and one day I got hacked. It was a trojan from a website and my AV didnt recognize it because it was a new virus until the day after I got hacked. I almost never access my plaync account since it is set on autorenew but my credit card expired and i needed to update the info and forgot to sign in on a another pc (i was tired and in a rush) and bam hacked a week later.

Does not matter how much security you put in place, NCSoft needs to change their password system, you should not be able to change your password hints unless you know the orginal answers to your passwords, you should not be able to change email address without a notification going to your old email address, and finally there should be an emergency one use password to totally lock out and down your account because a lot people are at their pcs when they are hacked but cannot do anything to stop the hackers even PMing a gm from another account they will not stop the hacking even though any gm with a half brain can see whats going on when a hacking is happening.

NCsoft is to blame for very shotty security that is about 6 years outdated. Simple changes to plaync could correct 90% of hackings if they choose too but havent ever made a change to it.
May I ask what site gave you the trojan and what were you downloading from there ?
That being said, you are right with the other things you say.

I caught mine from L2Vault, but it was hidden in an ad on the Google AdSense network. Once I updated my a/v, I blocked another attempt from an unrelated network (being Stratics)

It was a sneaky new trojan that linked back toa company in China.
I've taken a ethical hacking class in my college courses and I can tell you there is 3 ways the hackers obtain your information (besides a shared account).

#1 you use the same username/password on the account as you do on anything else (forums, work accounts, fan sites, other mmorpg's). These hackers can use sql injections to obtain admin rights and see all the information and accounts and passwords. I know it sucks but if you can, use a different username/password for everything you do (and have a hidden file of all the list of username/passwords you use).

#2 3rd party programs may contain hidden code that direct information to the creater of that program. I watched a youtube video of this guy making a bot program for wow and show how to inject code so the user wont even notice that he/she is giving away his/her account info. The solution is do not use them.

#3 Trojans coming from fansites. This was how I got my WOW account hacked if it wasn't from option 1. I thought to myself I don't need an antivirus because I am careful about what I do. Well I let my friend use the computer and he got the trojan from some fallout 3 site that ended up stealing my WOW account. Even though all my items were deleted, blizzard was kind enough to restore everything. The solution to this is to keep an antivirus/firewall and make sure it is on auto update. I know of 2 fansites where my virus protection detects trojans from them. They are l2vault and l2stratics, both have great information especially about quests. But they have trojans on them.

Oh wow I didn't even read your reply on l2vault and stratics... haha well there ya go.
This is strange as I often followed quests in both sites you mentioned. I havent got any trojan, nor (if i had AV) was any detected by my AV. Perhaps it is true, but it didnt happen to me. I will make a test in the future when i will have time and browse those sites for a while and see if anything sticks.

Did the OP receive his items back finally because they were "common items" because they were essentially considered common items in the game with respects to his ability as a paying customer to earn them back in a game in which he/she pays for? Or the complete disregard for the hours and time the human behind the character spent his/her keyboard earning them?
