So since i'm new to the game i was wondering what class to choose, i've played several MMROPG before and played Healing/Buff/Archer/Mage classes before (mostly in AION :)).
I'm sooo confused right now, can't figure out what class to pick.. or should i first pick a race and then pick a class?
I love party-ing, but solo is also kinda nice (don't know how easy it'll be to find party's) so any help will be very appreciated!!
consider first what u wana do.
u wana be damage dealer or supporter?
most of ppl nowdays take some dd - destro / tyrant/glads/daggers
personaly i admire good healers (cardi or ee or se)
so what kind of playing style u prefer ? making dmg or helping others?
a class will depend on your play style, classes on this game are super different than other MMO's for instance Healers here are does not have a lot killing abilities like in Aion and damage dealers will not kill anything if they have no buff or support so pretty much every classs depend on other classes to succeed
The last two points are dead on, but there is a saving grace in that there is a noobie buffer in town to buff you well enought to level and learn your toon.
You will need to consider what you like, if you want a pet, and if you like to use magic to kill or get face to face.
There are quite a few of all kinds of races and player types here, so most of them can offer a good compair and contrast for you.

Thx Valheru
Valheru? You don't perchance read Raymond E. Feist books, do you? If so, I think there are about a dozen of his devotees running around the game now with names like AshenShugar, Pug, Rhuagh, Macros, Calis, and Tomas just to name a few. You're going to fit right in! :D
Getting back to your quandary, the most important part is to pick the style of character game play that you prefer. It's not enough to say what you don't like. Even after nixxing the buffers, archers and mages, there are still a number of options to choose from. So tell us more about the kind of play style that gets your blood pumping.
forget what we have now...
they will disapear anyway....
If u chose enchanter for ex, make a BD...
think like what race and what class of GoD u prefer...
the L2 as we see now is about to end

sad but true
now, now, SirT. let us not preach destruction.
to Valheru: really all classes are needed and versatile in Lineage2. for the first 85 levels you will see variations on 36 different classes with unique skills. we won't worry about beyond that level until you understand how each of those 36 classes differs and changes.
what i would offer you in terms of advice is to take some time and pick an archetype; pick something you have had fun with in Aion. if you preferred Assassin in Aion maybe pick the best looking dagger in L2 because the differences between elf/darkelf/human are so subtle and so small that they seldom can be called a difference in the first place. tiny things like elves having 1 more dex, or darkelfs having more str... small differences.
whatever you choose make sure you knuckle down and really go to work to learn the class and the gear and the tactics of playing the class from fellow players both here, and in game. in the later levels the small differences make different party tactics. in the instance of Dagger classes you will need to know your party composition of friends and the goals of the party; pvp party/raid party/aoe party etc... you can't take a dagger in a mage party. some clans are pretty strict in this, so take heed.
there are no Top Classes in the game. only very capable classes with good and bad players and situational variances that can vary from lucky crits to lucky skill landing, to just plan lag.
good luck. post again with your choice of archetype and server!! we're not bad at giving specific advice when we know what you want find out.

:P
sorry but i have to correct u...
the play style of those daggers are completely diferent...
the diferences are much more than simple stats.
Its all in skills!
dark elf gets a great boost in critical damage, skill counteratack, evasion counter, among other skills
Elf gets a great boos in critical CHANCE, skill dodge, evasion chance, among other skills
Human gets boost in critical damage and chance, but not as great as DE and elf.... +dash, skill mirage, evasion haste among other skills
only these little diferences i listed here make all diference in playstyle...
search for the other skills they dont have in common and u ll se that even though they are all daggers their are very diferent classes!
can all 3 dagger classes deal 10k damage backstabs? yes. isnt that what matters? can all 3 daggers do lethal stabs with high frequency? sure. do all daggers tend to evade over 190 without being overbuffed and undergeared? dam skippy.
how you deal 10k damage is slightly different, but all 3 are just as capable.
same goes for archers
same goes for mages
in a sense, same goes for healers.
the only true differences come when melee splits between classes, a la differences between daggers and warriors. this is where the differences make the classes unique and contrastingly glaringly obviously different.
nobody picks Light Elf Dagger because they heard they were super in pvp. they go by their leaders. people can be led to believe anything with sufficient convincing data; but my point is not that i am trying to mislead anyone. i am trying in a roundabout way to say
"the difference between a 10k stab and a 12k stab is the difference between light elf and darkelf"
thats a pretty small difference considering there arent very many classes with >10k hp.
but this small fact is what has led so many to chose one way or the other.
what i am saying is that this small difference really doesnt/shouldnt play a huge factor in the choice of class or race.
the the examples you cited there are common threads you should be noticing; each have critical chance or damage passives for stabs. each has an emphatic ability to evade, and counter by evading to increase a stat. each has a 10 second lv 79 skill to reflect skills/dodge skills/counterattack skills. each has a lv 83 skill to boost ability during critical moments, afaik also each has an invisibility skill.
in a sense, same goes for healers.
Again, you went too far in your theories, Spudnik. There were lots of differences between the classes able to heal, before GoD.
In a sense, L2 is like rock-paper-scissor. In a sense. So why paying an account and grinding through all the levels when you can play L2 with friends at the coffee machine? ;)
No, there are similarities between EE and SE, but neither PP or BP are the same. The classes of L2 share some skills, but are all different enough to have an interrest by themselves.
if i were you i would have a look at the skill database at lineage2.rochand.com to get an idea of how similar/different the bow classes are.
@washtak while i have known that there are big differences between EE and Bishop, in the past i have been in groups where the EE INSISTED she was main healer, and then when the same group had a different EE (the party composition exactly the same) the Bishop was dubbed main healer.
but i really never saw much of a difference in group dynamics. we survived and had mana in both cases. no PR danger (even if there was there was 4 people with PR2 augs lol) no critical damage breakpoints, orcs frenzied and zealoted without problems...
there may be a touch of difference playing the class but theres not a big difference on the healing end of the stick.
also when was the last time you saw a Prophet be a good healer? level 40 maybe.

I've been in a group where an OL (83+) was the main healer, and I was pulling/stigmaing/trancing/mass-curing on my EE. While usually my EE is the main healer in that type of parties on that spot.

Why you people insist on doing simple things in a complicated way? :P
In a party without BP, the EE can be the main healer. Of course. Otherwise just /kick the EE who's claiming to be main healer. It's amazing what players invent when there's no serious support needed.

We maximize XP and fun within the parties we have. And EE has higher runspeed, so it's a better puller than OL.

Or the BP
I don't know about "most other cases", but EE with stigma (and/or nuke augment) is more suited to pulling DV groups than OL. There is not a big range from there you can pull (mobs try to return back if you pull them from too far), but the runspeed still matters. Besides, the OL should better be near the DDs if after a bad respawn there is a need of throwing a couple of seals.
