Hi.
There is good modern trend to open some projects at some stages of life-cycle.
Sometimes they put it free to play, sometimes public source codes for developers community - openness is success I'd say :)
And about Lineage II game client.
Lets discuss here is it potentially possible to revive our game by opening client-sided codes for alternative projects. New game engine, optimised graphics - NC will never make it for such an old project as L2, but game fans might to do...

Sorry mate, the code is proprietary to NCSoft Korea. You will have to post this on their forum.
Also, GoD is bringing a new engine (I hope it will be at least a mod of Unreal 3) and better graphics.
and the Trial Account is a great way to tease players to buy. Most good games aren't F2P nowadays. Try playing Counter-Strike without buying a cd-key, playing on Non-Steam servers... it just sux.
Cya,
Luxiel
PS.: In your sig, Ashes is written with a S instead of a C. Hope it wal helpfull :)
oh, now that sux... Unreal 2 is already outdated =/Yeah but i don't think it's easy to upgrade to UE 3.0 unlike many think, since the UE 2.x they use has been heavily adapted (i.e. source edits).
If they want to upgrade to UE 3.0 it would mean alot of those newer files need to be edited in their source aswell.
If those UE 2.x files weren't heavily edited in their source it wouldn't be so much of a problem to upgrade to UE 3.0.
It really depends on how much work has gone into adapting the source.
Like you said "code is proprietary to NCSoft Korea" the edited engine has become proprietary, meaning the code can't be compared anymore with another game that runs on an unaltered or even different adapted UE 2.x

Yeah, guess you are right... but since there were such a big time since prelude I was expecting they would hire an entire team just to make a UE 3.0 version...
But it's Ok, even with UE 2.0, Lineage 2 already has one of the best graphics for a MMORPG. ^^

On top of that, countless legal issues would have to be over comed to open source something like that even if NC Korea was willing to do it (which I heavily doubt).
Apart from that it would open the gates of Hell. The number of exploits found would be countless. And in contrast with other OSS that started as OSS and evolved that way, a serious exploit could destroy everything in some minutes. Depending to the time discovered or how heavily it was exploited or the impact to L2 in general that could lead from a mild rollback (best case scenario) to a complete wipe and start fresh (worst case)
And ofc, as in the case of OSS, manufacturer would have to provide some "premium" and some benefits to use is branded product (aka official client / official server ) instead of the OSS version (aka community client / other servers). It would require some serious changes to the current business model to keep NCSOFT alive. That can't happen from one day to another. OSS is a different beast, some started building a business model about it from early days and from scratch and some of them succeed (though not all). Others who succeed just embraced the model getting some other's code, or by contributing something, not by just open sourcing their sole property, their cash cow.
Altering the game code in any way and/or trying to open "client-side" variations of Lineage II is illegal in many ways, including being against the EULA and copyright laws. Thread locked.
