When you go to the 3rd room, you must stay at the hall, dont enter the room. Your assistant NPC will not die as long as you protect him from the mobs coming from room 2. Once he deactivates it, you will be notified and then you can proceed.

He dies because you are not killing the mobs, you must kill them before they reach him, move close to where they spawn and start hitting them from there that way they don't ever reach him, only 2 max spawn at a time so it shouldn't be too big of an issue.
