I don't know if its my video card or just the game, but my fps is only around 20-30 near the quest giver, which is very crowded in the starting area on 1 of the new servers. My fps is really choppy and doesn't feel like 20-30 even when fraps says so.
It got me really worried cuz i happen to get artifacts on bf3 too. Not sure if it's a coincidence that both games perform poorly on a months-old video card, but it shouldn't have problems handling such an old game even with hundreds of ppl in the screen.

CPU: i7-2700k
video: GTX 560 TI
ram: 8gb

it never "finishes" loading, L2 loads player models dynamically (old engine) so choppy performance is usually down to HD speed

I'm still debating if I want to go with an SSD later (sign, money) or RAID my two existing drives instead. I was going to do a full reinstall of Windows anyhow (spring cleaning).
Everyone is laging. The problem is all the players on screen. its not really your sys. i'm running 2 video cards ad play every game on max settings.. This game with all these people just standing around is a lag feast.
SO this is how to get rid of someone the lag:
Go under options then Video
At the bottom you will see Display Limit
This pretty much lowers how many players are on the screen and the range that you can view them. Move the slider all the way to the left and see how it is. Move it up till you like it where it is. Lag problem fixed
A few other things you can do is lower some of your graphics settings. I tried this and I was still lagging still I lowered the Display Limit. That pretty much tells you thats its all the players thats lagging the system..
Disable Shadows or just lower it
Disable Anti-Aliasing. it really doesn't do make much of a difference in a game like this....
You mainly just need to mess around with the graphics settings to increase performance.

Playing with asus g73(with ssd), got no lag at all, everything on top graphics got around 60 fps in any spot so with ur pc should work even more clear. Try to install Leatrix Latency Fix helps a lot.
SSD drives are the magic key in lineage2, Raiding two fast drives a close second. But if you rely on a regular single drive you will lag/stutter when there's lots of players around you. What NetBlaise suggests (dropping the display limits) helps but the solution as has been mentioned is fast drives

it's bizzare that a 7-8 year old game requires a 2 year old technology to play. Well, I guess it's good news for me at least.
