They were closed due to GoD lore, but the problem is that devs didn't replace them with new similar spots in therms of mobs(4x) and exp, and melees now compete against nukers and WC-OL in spots made for mages, it's really boring when you're almost reaching a mob but a WC kills it before.

People managed to level up with catas before they came out. People can still level without them.
I heard they were closed because they we dangerous and many people were harmed and even killed when they ventured down to those caverns dedicated to Shilen.
I do believe there is a quest to investigate what happened in the catacombs and you can teleport in there. But you will not find the same catacombs you did before...

And there are such spots at each lvl range (with high hp/exp mobs, where nukes are useless)
