I'm leveling a human wizard, but soon I'll have to make the second class change, and I'm unsure what to pick up so I need some recomendations from the more experienced players.
All I want is something that can level as fast as possible, with as little downtime as possible.
Now, I've researched their skills on 2 different database sites (L2GC and L2archive) and from what I saw, necromancer seems like the ideal choise, due to it having the main advantages of a nuker (Strong nukes) summoner (Pet that hits hard and transfer pain) and a rather large arsenal of debuffs to cripple and restrain the enemy.
However, several people have warned me that going Necromancer isn't a good idea because at higher levels most (if not all) mobs are highly resistant to shadow as well as necros having a noticeable lack of AoE, and that's the only element of magic necros can use.
Is this true? should I make a sorceress then? because they have both shadow and fire spells, but they lack Body-to-Mind (thus forcing me to rest every time I'm dry of MP) summons, and the overall quantity of debuffs of the necro.
Any suggestions? I know that they both end up as Feoh Wizards, I just want the one that can get me there as quickly as possible with as little downtime as possible, so the main factors I wanna know are: Kill speed, and downtime.
Sorc is better at AOE but has no b2m so had bad mp management,
Necro only has dark attacks but gets a beasty summon and transfer pain / a lot of debuffs
In the end yes they do end up as the same class...NCSOFT truely ****** up by making classes merge because now there's no uniqueness about any of the classes any more
Basically now you wanna focus on which has the best race bonus (both humans) or best base stats for your AWAKENED class... (im not sure if they're the same), as this is all that matters anymore. 85- is just useless grinding.
a bit wrong both of you
if you have a mentor, you cant lvl fast with cdl because now vr works on magic attacks too.
sorc does have btm but its lvl 1 and i personally used it all the way up to 85
anyway, it takes 3 days to get 76 or whatever and there are plenty of spots with mp herbs
after 77 till 85, there is no doubt that sorc will lvl much faster because it has the best aoe skills and thats the only thing that matter

thanks, this is what I wanted to know.
Though, getting a mentor isn't as easy as it sounds =(
I've tried to get one on the first character I made (Warsmith) and it was impossible. Whenever I asked, all I got was either silence, rude responses, or (weak) scam attempts (in the form of "Pay me 10 millions and I'll be your mentor" kinda scam. Particularly weak because the one asking for money was wearing an A-grade plate set :P I guess he thought I didn't knew about R-grade at 86+)
You realize I spend 7 hours yesterday (in a row) on Forest of the Dead (Warsmith lvl 64) and barely got 1 lousy level and a half? how the hell does one gets to 76 in 3 days?

there are guides in other forums section to get 75 in like 3 days but i had my own guide... kill mobs over and over, aoe if possible. i havent done any kamaloka or daily quests, waste of time imo. but this was mentor buff and the xp buff from mentor.
why do you idiots advertise bots or recommend them? anyway, its even slower botting, they choose areas with low risk of dieing but the xp blows too
Well I got to 85 on my Yul Archer in pretty much a month. Less maybe. But I had mentor buffs and currently no life (I am unemployed, so I can play several hours a day if I need / want to).
As for Sorcerers, I don't know them. With a Necromancer, it can be interesting. The nukes aren't as strong as the normal nukers (A Spellhowler's Death Spike will always have more power than a Necro's death spike at the same level), but the Cursed man hits for a LOT of damage.
That said... Curse Death LInk... I was always too much a wimp to use it. But if you're brave enough, that thing hits for a lot. I'm not quite sure you're aiming for PvP or PvE, if you're aiming for PvP, then Necro is superior. I'm a lousy PvPer myself and I've always done alright with my Soultaker whenever I needed to. (which was rare, mind you, but there were times...).
Not having played Sorcerer, I don't know how to aid you with the comparison. I know, however, I am not leveling my Soultaker anymore, and preferring my Storm Screamer simply because I'm not THAT fond of the hybrid state of the Necro/Soultaker anymore. I want either a pure summoner, or a pure nuker, not a hybrid of both.
PS: I couldn't solo PI's quest on my necro either with normal SE buffs, as the summons do physical damage and your nukes take a bit longer to kill them than a normal nuker. And there's corpse burst which is the only AoE you have, and if you're unlucky to get one of those **** dinos passing by JUST when you're nuking their friends... you're dead.
I would make a necromancer. Get some XP runes and if possible make a friend with an awakened player and get mentored. After your class change go to cruma tower and send your pet at mobs and nuke down other mobs. That should take you to 52. Then go to the cemetary until you're like 58. Then XP in valley of saints until level 70-72. Go curse death link at hot springs or nuke at forest of the dead until you're 77. Then either do the quests up to "attack sailren!" And use that quest to hit level 85 by pulling big trains, with transfer pain, and mass gloom, drain nuke one mob down and corpse burst aoe the rest, or go curse death link at the altar from the dark elf village and avoid dimensional gatekeepers or w/e they are called.
And yes you can curse death link. You have a 20% chance to gain 9% (vr4) of HP from the damage you do. You can keep that down easy with body to mind.

its more like 90% or more, i rarely see not getting hp when attacking, thats why i said, cdl isnt that good anymore

=/ I have neither of those.
Don't know anyone who can mentor me, and at least on Bartz, the few awakened players there utterly refuse to even give me the time of the day......
And I have a job, so I can't really play more than at best 6 hours per day.
I'm not quite sure you're aiming for PvP or PvE
Technically neither, all I want is to get to 85 as quick as possible, with as little downtime as possible. After 85 its the same since both evolve into Feoh Wizard.

can this whole strategy also apply to a sorceress? they do have better AoE after all.

Well, one COULD just ignore VR and just click it off. As a necro one wouldn't need it anyways since Vampiric claw, and corpse drain mixed with potions should keep you up.

Anyways, I traded my Soultaker for a Storm Screamer for a nuker. I'm happier that way. But if I had to choose between a Necromancer or a Sorcerer...
HEck honestly? I'd choose neither. I'd choose a Warlock if I were going the Human mage route pre-40. :D But if cute kitties aren't your thing, then I'd probably choose the Necromancer over the Sorcerer.
PS: By the way. The Attack Sailren technique that Knight has described? Don't even TRY it without Mentor buffs. You won't like the results.
With transfer pain, vamp, pots and buff herbs you'll do just fine in PI nest. With a Sorceror, unless you have a buffer or mentor, you'll find it difficult to survive aoeing in there.

I didn't find it "just fine" with SE in tow. Even with transfer pain, VAMP and full S gear.
Honestly enough. If I pulled three, it was ok. If I happened to be unlucky to get one of those Velociraptors passing me by, no amount of vamp, transfer pain, pots or even tabbing out to heal myself helped.
I wouldn't advise it. With Mentor buffs it would probably have been a breeze.
With ISS buffs and my sorc in DC robes and arcana mace I'm finding no problem to solo AOE 5-6 groups or raptors for a quest. Could prolly do more but it's just inconvenient.

I highlighted it there for you.
With Iss Buffs I would have taken my Soultaker to 85 by now doing that quest. THat's because Iss Buffs are TOO good.
The original poster claimed she doesn't have a mentor, hence no mentor buffs. So we have to think about trying PI on raptors on a necromancer with no buffs, or let's say, with normal SE buffs or even milk pots or whatever kind of buffs she can have (which is what I tried on my soultaker, but I didn't have milk pots OR those luxury cocktails that give the Melody buffs).
Trust me. It's NOT easy. It's very demanding, it's very dangerous, and it's very annoying.
Gimme Iss Buffs though and I'll go past it as a breeze.
Well I've already traded my Soultaker for a Storm screamer. But I did give the PI a shot without mentor buffs and only SE buffs.
So I can speak from experience.
People have to keep in mind that not everyone has mentor buffs, or an ISS enchanter following them around giving them uber buffs. And the OP is one of the cases. So her leveling will be slower unless she manages to find someone to mentor her.
with or with out mentor buffs or normal buff nerfing the necro is still a mistake when they removed the useage of cursed bones for death spike thats how they should have left it but no they had to nerf this and that and whatever else they did :(

mentor buffs are the same just no element/mental resists (not needed) and no sonata but you can try duo with bd/sws if you really want them but for most part, a sorc can do fine lots of groups with just mentor buffs

I know they're the same. They just don't have the 4 minute ones and the resists, as you say.
But on my Soultaker, I don't have a mentor and I don't have an Iss Enchanter. All I have is my SE buffs.
And of course in duos it would be fine. But I was referring to Knight saying it's easy soloing that quest on a Soultaker. It's not. No matter how much you can say it is, unless you have access to those buffs. Either mentor, or Iss, or the pots that give you the same buffs.
All the information I have given is based on the ability of an average solo player with no OOP or mentor.
If the OP can't handle PI nest, I advised altar with CDL if the OP can't handle that there are other methods but with his/her listed play time it'll be a long time before he/she awakens.
Every player can handle similar situations differently. What may be easy for one player may be difficult or impossible for another. So just try the listed methods and see if they work well for you. I wouldn't give a challenging task to a new, casual player.
Well, the ability of an average solo player with no OOP or mentor is NOT soloing PI on the Attack Sailren quest.
Let's put it this way. I've done it with my Stormscreamer with mentor buffs, which are Iss buffs, in the end. Even groups of more than 3, they were no big deal because the buffs make it so.
But with the Soultaker, it's not that easy. Three of those Velociraptors you can do it. Risky though, you need fast reactions, corpse burst after the first is dead, spamming vamp claw and with VR buff and transfer pain always on.
But the moment you're unlucky and another group happens to pass by when you're killing those (which happens all the time), you're dead.
It's not easy. Not even for an average solo player WITH SE buffs. Let alone without a buffer or mentor.
Altar with CDL without buffs I haven't tried. Can't say if it's easy or difficult. But knowing altar and knowing that with CDL you're pretty much at the little bit of your HP bar to do your maximum damage...
I don't know. Maybe I'm just too much a wimp to try THAT option.
Anyways, I traded my Soultaker for a Storm Screamer for a nuker. I'm happier that way. But if I had to choose between a Necromancer or a Sorcerer...
Yes but he/she wants the fastest class to level, if you are thinking on this route might aswell get a mentor or this decision becomes a bit redundant (wanting to xp as fast as possible).
Well that is true. But sometimes not having a mentor isn't much because you don't want to.
Sometimes, especially nowadays with mentees being idiots and switching mentors the moment their mentor disconnects, some mentors are wary. And on Bartz, I'm not sure how many are available for mentoring, or how many would mentor outside their clans, etc etc...
I was lucky as I don't like shouting for mentors, and I got my mentor out of a pure lucky strike. At first she didn't remain logged for longer. But I think the moment she saw me leveling and going high in levels even when she wasn't around, she started trying to help and putting her char on so I could level faster. Though she still disconnects here and there.

I was lucky also, i logged in and asked a clan leader to sponsor me to get clan oath armor (since it was gonna be impossible to get it on god) and managed to be his mentee. So that's one of the things it takes, join a clan, even if it isn't a definitive clan but it's a bit easier to trust that way and being comunicative in that clan even if you intend leaving at a later date.

but can it be done with a sorceress just as well as with a necro?

This, a hundred times this.
Not having a mentor isn't because you don't want to (Who would be dumb enough to refuse mentoring?) but because one isn't available.
I dunno how it works on other realms, but on bartz I shouted for weeks that I wanted a mentor on my warsmith and never got a repply, so my guess is they will only mentor people within their own clans to prevent dumb newbies who would ditch them the moment they are offline.
PI can be done on pots with a sorceror carefully. With a necro its easier because you can take double the damage with transfer pain and with vamp claw you can fill up fast in between herb drops. Once you have herbs for empower and acumen, its smooth sailing. For a sorc it becomes easy at 81 with aura blast.
About altar avoid the dimsional mobs and You can killl everything before it reaches you

the hour of truth is here, doing class change now......
As for mentor buffs or no, the current even gives plenty of scrolls with the same buffs. Grab some of those and PI quest as Necro should be a breeze. I had mentor buffs, granted, and finding parties was never any more difficult than any other mage. At 81+ dino isle flies by. Grab as many mobs as you can with transfer pain toggled on, mass gloom, vamp mist, maybe one nuke, corpse burst, all dead. :)
Also, being able to have a summon and pet out helps with magic resist mobs substantially. Get a wolf and pop a summon = smooth sailing when solo'ing and helps with certain dailies quite a bit. Especially when places are crowded since you can "claim" multiple mobs at once. :P
