If your mentee is between 40 and 50 lvl you wont get any mentee coins until your mentee reach 50 lvl first. Then you will receive mentee coins for every lvl your mentee gains

And keep in mind that you need to open those mentee mails before your mentee reaches new level, otherwise they wont show up.

The patch notes and in game mails says remember to delete this messages after you receive the mentee coins only because if your mailbox is full you wont be able to receive new at all so you will lose the new mails and there is no option to get them after that. But you can receive multiple mails from all your mentees at once as long as you have free mailbox space.
