I've had an active account for a number of years and I've never complained about the game but this week's change kind of forced me to think about this.
First of all, I've activelly paid for my account for 4 years or something, and I've had several accounts and I was happy...yes, I was paying to play this game and I was happy.
Recently L2 went to an F2P model and inevitably we got a huge influx of players joining all around. Some are legit, many are not, etc. That was to be expected with a free model right?
Well, the thing that really ticked me off this week or to log in and find out that now besides trying to struggle with "Server too busy, try again" thing, I know must use a 6-8 digit account code.
Marvelous. So now, the "THEORY" is, is that when our Automated friends try to "Log In", they will have troubles doing so because they now have an extra layer of security to deal with.
Well, I find that to be very inconvenient way to deal with the Automatons(work with me, I'm going with the Transformers Theme here). So my question is, if you don't Randomly reboot the Servers, thereby forcing people to log out and log back in, what is the stinking point behind the Security Code other than an extra layer of "annoyance"?
If the company had problems banning people before for their "automated solutions" because they were paying for their account ( i can understand that as a company and a business owner), however, now that the game is actually FREE, the Banning of Automatons should be done with very little regard for their woes. Am I right? It's not like they are paying for their game time, it's not like they will be missed, and it will certainly clear up a lot of of that horrible Lag and not to mention the areas that are heavily overfarmed by them. No one will miss them, unless it's the Automaton owners themselves...
Anyone else finds this "solution" a bit more on the ludicrous side when it comes to deal with people using 3rd party solutions to play or am I the only one who thinks that this is assinine?

Nice respond. Yes, I didn't read the "patch" notes, nor will I. Also, nice touch to quote a sentence out of the whole paragraph and place it out of context. You need to pat yourself on the back bro.
Though its meaning is greatly diluted when I can run around for 5 minutes and count between 10 to 20 groups on auto-pilot, well, obviously something is still not working.
Like others already told, the "extra security code" is only a extra way to protect your account from others.
Not only the numbers change ramdomly from place every log, that you need a 5+ digits combination (i tried 4 and didn't work for me)
This would never prevent bots, since they can easely make a script to bypass, since the script would require the input of a number, and the visual keyboard won't even bother.

Ok, thank you very much Endurance, really.
Here's a question to NCsoft then, where's the "OP-Out" feature?
I didn't ask for this system, so forcing it on me does nothing more but to annoy me. It's a free game now, I don't have to pay, so "if" my account gets compromised, well, I'll be in no hurry to create a new one.

Some people care about their stuff, if you don't care is your problem, pin is here to stay.

Your argument would be more valid if you had any input into the development of the game. There are a great many features of this game I did not ask for, such as any class except Bladedancers. Should they be removed?

This is just a way for NCsoft to make sure ppl know that YOUR account, is not they're priorities.
When ppl lose accounts, items, and other, they come here on forum, make a hell of it, cry out loud, and blame NC for lowsy protection of their personal accounts.
This was purely a "new" way for NC soft to say: "Your account, your problem, your responsabilite. Got hacked/scammed/etc? Deal with it, not my job to protect"
The other poster said this was a quizz (must be mentally chalenged), this poster says it's an annoyance. I bet next poster will say they just can read letters and not numbers!

Obviously the OP has ADHD and those 5 seconds or so it takes to click the numbers is too much for him

Pfft, no one plays BDs anyway, except as boxed support. :p
I love how ppl with absolutely no idea about software security think this pin actually helps them against ppl stealing their accounts.
Go have a cookie, it will stop world hunger. Really.
While u do so, please count to 10, this will also stop any war in the whole world...
...and please forward all those emails with "send this to 100 ppl or u will die" text. It could really happens to you.
...talking about ppl believing ******ed made-up stuff...
...yes, that pin will protect your account against mean hackers out there!
EVERY game that implements any form of secondary authentication like a PIN doesn't have an issue with accounts being hijacked, go peddle your FUD somewhere else

veryvery bad analogy.
by counting or sending stupid text ur change nothing, but the pin system indeed makes it harder to hjack an account.
sure everything can be hacked sooner or later, but this pin system makes it harder and stops most cheap and obvious systems.
best protection is common sense, but most ppl on the world don't have it.

where did you came from lol?
you are wrong at so many lvls i won't even bother trying to make you understand.
i'm gonna eat my yummy cookie now :D
bye

I'm not a software security expert, why don't you enlighten the rest of us, since you're obviously 'pro' why the PIN security will provide an ounce of protection to your account?
Even the best systems used by the banking system is not failsafe, and we're talking about Banks, not some virtual account with virtual money.
So explain why the PIN Security isn't good enough mr 'pro'.
PS. just because your best friend's dog's friend's master's girlfriend's mom's boyfriend's son's third cousin's schoolmate just one time in band camp met a guy who said he was from Anonymous.

you my good man are an idiot! enough said!! Which comment u making bro? u pro or against? make ur mind up sheesh!
If someone wants into your account badly enough or if you are extremely sloppy with your own account information, someone will get in.
What the PIN does offer is a little bit of protection for someone who mistakenly enters their sign on information into a phishing site.
It's not perfect. It doesn't fix everything. I still believe it is a good system. I think an authenticator-type system would work better but it would never be mandatory.
At the end of the day, what NCSoft wants is fewer people claiming to be "hacked" and having to spend time "restoring" the account.

First of all, it's Mrs and my name is not pro. I'm way far from being pro but at least I talk about the subjects I have an idea, I don't go around saying things I have no idea about and saying everyone is wrong and I'm right like you.
Second I am a systems engineer graduate with 10 years of experience on the job.
My point is close to yours: nothing is fail safe if the user is not prepared to use it.
Most accounts hacks pass by ppl sharing accounts, buying adena and giving their accounts, etc. For all these cases, the PIN doesn't make any difference. Ppl will share the **** pin the same way they give away their accounts.
The other half of account "hacks" is by keyloggers. Yes, u have a fair amount of standard keyloggers, but most are targeted keyloggers.
In this case ppl would use a keylogger targeted to "attack" l2. So this pin can only prevent keylogger attacks form random keyloggers which are the few. Yet again, if the user is not is not prepared to protect their PC from a random keylogger, then the user is not prepared at all to protect his PC against a targeted keylogger (in other words: if he's so **** to get a normal keylogger then he's **** enough to get an L2 keylogger).
Why isn't this PIN good enough? Because the players using it are not good enough security for the accounts they want to protect.
5 minutes in google can tell you there are already keyloggers to get the L2 PIN and even download the source code. There are also "bots" to login with PIN.
So, how is this PIN thing going to protect the users who willingly give away heir accounts? Or users who keep installing malware? Or users who enter a phishing site and put their login info there?
PS.: if you would have read what I posted before in this forum u would have gathered all this info by yourself. Yet u made a post asking it playing the "I'm the cool one here". So cool that reading where u actually post is too much for u? This is the kinda user for whom the PIN is useless.
So you find these L2 keyloggers on purn sites too?
I have a hard time believing you have a fair chance of getting a L2 keylogger with this pin-bypass thing if you don't go to shady sites that are related to...oh yes - L2.
The chance of getting a keylogger from someone interested on your kids game is very low, the chance of that someoen interested with the PIN bypass thing is even lower. So, i ask, how is the pin not eficient?
Nobody said it's 100% ****-proof, but it works nevertheless.
saying everyone is wrong and I'm right like you.
Actually, you did this, more than 1 time Mrs. Bashie!

The chance of having ANY keylogger should be next to zero. But u see ppl installing them happily.
And that is actually my point. Who would want to go to shady L2 sites? No one! Oh wait... kids playing the game bcos they are promised adena or crap!
Do u rly think someone sending out a normal keylogger would care about your l2 account? I'm putting my eye next to the online banking login, not some kiddies play.
If you have a keylogger to get your L2 account, it's bcos u entered a site u shouldn't or u installed some 3rd party prog u shouldn't. Both cases imo u deserve it and a ban too.
I'm not saying u are wrong, I'm saying: "do u have any idea what u are saying and can u give a foundation as I did to it?" So far I've just seen u defending the PIN like a God, only with faith and half misinformation. I've tried to explain in this topic and others why I think this PIN is in no way added security to the average player.
