The Nature of Botting

I've struggled for years to define exactly what it is that makes botting in Lineage 2 so disturbing to me, personally. This post is an attempt to cement that definition and express my viewpoint on what a bot is.

Everyone signs the same social contract.

Everyone picks a race.
Everyone picks a sex.
Everyone picks a height.
Everyone picks a hairstyle.
Everyone picks a face.

Everyone begins this game with an act of self creation and expression. We choose our names. People scream who they are in all caps. Other people understate themselves with none. ASKFOR. dekciw. Crown. Life. pku520. ErB. Mong. spam. LIE.

These names and faces and pixels in motion are living expressions of real people in how they play and interact with each other. Each is unique, unpredictable, and dynamic - evidence of life that can't be simulated or completely defined in one unchanging block of text that might attempt to define how something called a 'human' behaves in any given condition, and what the nature of that thing is.

A character with a name and a face and an identity - a human identity - no longer being controlled by any person at the keyboard is a thing that, when fully understood, should terrify you. It is the lie of humanity where no humanity exists. A thing that moves and jerkes and runs and talks like people without ever having been one. A thing without a heartbeat that was not born, has no mother, does not sleep, and does not think.

This is what made Poe's Mask of the Red Death such a terrifying thing to comprehend. Something that wore a mask and walked like a human through a crowd in silence. When they rushed to pull back the mask and direct their fury at the wearer, there was simply nothing there. Nothing under the mask but empty space. The total lack not just of a human, but of anything.

Death was under the mask because nothing was there.

The lack of a human and the death it represents is what I see when a cluster of bots twitches across my screen. I see an animated mask of pixels and sound created to make me think I am not alone when in fact I am, and was from the beginning. The people around me were never people to begin with.

Long term, wide spread botting leads players to begin seeing one another not as people but as the lie of other people. Distrust becomes the default and the norm between two people interacting with each other for the first time. New players are treated as if they don't exist because everyone thinks they truly do not exist. Game interaction loses its humanity, and that humanity is what attracts us all to this game.

We don't need programs to compete. Humans play Lineage 2 as it exists today in ways no script or program can be equivalent to. Agreeing to play with each other as humans is what makes our community a community of consent and not ****. Violating the social agreement we all made by using a program to control a character obliterates the fundamental trust our community is based on, replacing the foundation with lie. The concept of a lie being the foundation of all human interaction is one that will drive a human insane.

It does not need to happen twice.

Real bots are obvious. If you see them, write down their names, the time and date, what they were doing, and take screen shots. Submit this information to NCSoft through the http://us.ncsoft.com/en/support/ interface.

Yes, bots are being banned. Keep reporting them. Keep them out of good clans and away from the community until NC has the time it needs to read the reports and remove them from the game.
poetic, A+ write up :)
This really touched me. You should be spending your spare time out-side of Lineage. Perhaps a writing career? Anyway, very well said!
i really enjoyed reading your post, loved it, and share your thoughts about how botting affects how players see each other.

In the last few weeks i've been seeing bots everywhere i go, im trying to not think that way, but its pretty hard with all the obvious ones running around.

Never understood botting anyway, why play a game if you dont actually play?
After so many aggressive trading of insults in this forum, is good to know that we still have something good to read here ... I hope not only touch the consciousness of the players ...
Gratz man :)
Oh, the humanity and all the passengers screaming around here. I'm sorry. Honest: I can hardly breathe. I'm going to step inside where I cannot see it. ~ Herbert Morrison
The best post of bots I have ever read :D
The people just insult bots but you... you did like a poem against bots, very well :)

PS: Sorry for my bad english :S
Very soulful. I almost want to highlight the last two lines but then that distract from the overall message.
Thank you all for the feedback. It was validating.

That's what I'm talkin' bout! Well written piece indeed.

Perfect! Botters not are players, and they never will be.
Ya know...i hate botters as much as the next guy...but...there is 1 upside to botting i really enjoy.....The idiots bot so much...they dont know how to actually play their toon and a lvl 82 can whoop the *** of a lvl 85...it makes pvp so much fun when ya embarrass them in front of their clannies :D Stupid Botter says : "Hmmm what does this skill do i wonder" ... while im kicking the daylights out of him and leaving him dead on the side of the road for the vultures to move in lawl
I dont understand people who bots, why they download a game if they wont play it?
I'm bumping this because I feel like it is relevant to the other post and helps explain the issue in more detail. I got a few positive pms from people ingame after this post telling me it helped them understand why they were bothered by bots without being able to define the reason.

If this should not have been bumped, or if the topic is not helpful to the game and the community here, please delete the thread or just this reply.
ok this is how u get rid of bots if THEY WANT (managing company): in european servers they have a very good anti bot/3rd party game protection. also they made an event were ppl would go hunt (find & report) bots and admins would ban them. also the banning rules are not so hard meaning that ppt got 2 strikes (a 1 day ban fist time and a 7 day the 2nd time the were caught) the 3rd time was forever ban.
the result was that the are bots almost extinct, 90% of online players being humans.
all i takes is will power and some of the yes we can spirit.
And this egg event will be extended 1 week. Botters will have 1 more week to bot the **** out of their heads. Like wtf, some has like 12k of small eggs lol. Impossible! Unless they have 4-5 toons farming eggs at the same time.
I think is a total missinterpretation of why people bot and how many see botters, but each person has their opinion.

As for the eggs, i go to fairies and get over 1k eggs in 3 hours, just because you cannot get 12k eggs, it doesnt mean the people who have them bot or that is impossible.

+over 9000 post. But Assuming that people use bot if u can't defeat them easily especially if you're higher than 5 Lvs than them is totally a lame excuse isn't it? make sense? yes? okay? okay.. We're playing legit since we started to play this game. and its really funny coz people call us bots because we have the same names. well everyone have their opinion but we don't give a *** really what people say. but Cheers.
