Prepaid Credit Card Fail

General Discussion Started Last reply 38 posts
Just wanted to share my first and possibly last attempt to purchase Ncoins in L2. PLEASE do not move this to any other area, it is needed to be viewed in this section.

Since NCsoft is slow to move on creating de facto Prepaid Ncoin Cards, most of us are forced to use a credit card. Some of us however do not want to ever own a credit card, so those that do not use a credit card are forced to try a different method that may...or may not...work for them.

I had posted a thread a little while back asking if any Canadian users had used a prepaid credit card to purchase Ncoins.

I had gotten a few responses, so I thought, "Okay, if those individuals made a coin purchase with a prepaid credit card, then I will too!", or so I had initially thought. Talk about being totally wrong.

I buy a Vanilla MasterCard prepaid credit card, go through the motions of purchasing 4000 Ncoins, and got a simple "Declined" message. I open a ticket. Response time from NCsoft was remarkably fast (KUDOS NCsoft you rock there) but once they investigated more, they told me the Decline was coming on my side, not on their transaction server side.

So here is the thing. If I post here and ask for ppl to share real experiences, and real information, not "purhaps I did" or "I might have", please offer me real information based on your own real-world experiences...so here I am stuck with a 50 dollar prepaid credit card that indeed has a $50.00 balance. Yes, I tried lower denominations. It would appear wherever the transaction server that NCsoft has located it, wherever it is in the world, MasterCard Vanilla prepaid creditcard company does NOT like where they are located, and will more than likely deny your transaction. I guess this will be the last time I decide to post here on the forums since the information people share here, is suspect. Someone please prove me wrong, I would like that.

Too Long Didnt Read: Someone told me to buy a prepaid credit card to purchase Ncoins. They said they did it successfully, and now it would seem they "lied" about it and they perhaps assumed it would work. I am now sitting on a 50 dollar prepaid credit card which was declined. NCsoft needs to make a new Prepaid NCsoft Coin card and catch up to the rest of the MMOs that offer this service. Punctuation typos....dont they rock!

why ppl refuse to get them self a credit card?
i have1 and i took the credit card just becuz of the game
(back in time monthy fee for play L2)

and sometimes u can buy a few coins to buy a xp item with it
there is something that might be happening... when u buy the 4000 coins pack, u dont pay 50 dollars, u pay those 50 dollars + VAT that i think its something like 12 dollars or a lil bit more.... so maybe ur credit isnt enought for the 4000 coins purchuase?
I had attempted all denominations and got a Decline. Was a tad disappointing to me.

I would now hope that NCsoft would now consider to create a prepaid coin card for ease of purchasing coins plus the added bonus of the extreme security found when using a prepaid coin card system. I refuse to use a real credit card online - or anywhere - due to lack of security. If for any reason my security is compromised, then so too would my credit card information. It is all about security to me, and for me, sometimes the best security is to simply "not go there" with some things.
get a bank card, with visa
no credit involved

Do you pay all your groceries and stuff with cash?
Did you ever contact your credit card company? If it's being declined on their side it sounds like a problem with them.

Your more likely to get robbed on the street than someone stealing money from your card from safe payments like NCsoft

thats true aswell... since i used paypal option and cc option aswell and never had a single problem with it :)
I called my company that underwrites MasterCard Vanilla, the balance is still $50.00. I will now use this elsewhere.

I pay everything with cash. I understand this may sound alien to some (aliens? blame them always!) but there are a number of ppl in this world that simply pay by cash. Debit card? No thanks. PayPal? No thanks. Prepaid coin card system? That would eliminate the need for credit cards in a hurry, and most MMOs today offer that exact service. I hope NCsoft catches up in their free2play conversion to include a prepaid coin card system that would allow all people, of all ages, to purchase the card and then use it. If you need to know my age, well it is well above 40 years. Pay by cash is best, no need to worry about monthly bill and no interest charges for balance not paid at the end of the month.
@Bing: I would still need a credit card to purchase those time cards from Amazon. Ping pong anyone? >.<

i said i usually buy them from amazon... but i bet u have fisic stores (lol im in Portugal and i know where 2 buy them from) that sell them... a game store usually sells em... and i bet that vanilla card can be used 2 buy those nc cards from amazon ^_^ ! anyway im trying 2 help u... thats all

and NC Soft did offer it... they had more options a few months ago :) they removed em because of some VAT problem i guess
Bing i SO appreciate your help!

I live in Canada and have no idea where to find these time cards in a store.

If someone that is indeed Canadian can point me in the right direction for these time cards I would try that out. Till then, cash is how I pay for all things. I am not even sure if NCsoft is still manufacturing those time cards or if they are at their end-of-life cycle already?
Official Question:

Is NCsoft planning on making a prepaid coin card to replace the time card that was available previous to the f2p conversion?
Using Google to do a search using a search phrase I am unsure of is like well, you know. Trying to buy Ncoins using a prepaid credit card lol!

So you found EB Games as a supplier of the NCsoft time card? Okay, I will need to hop a bus sometime and investigate that lead.

Bing thanks.

P.S. I hope the CM here would pass along my question to the devs like Juji, and perhaps get an official response regarding NCsoft making prepaid coin cards to replace their old time cards, since the game has evovled to f2p.
@Elrohir: I have used the Vanilla MasterCard prepaid credit card on other MMOs with no issues. I called them up got a balance on my card, and well thats that. Balance is there, so I will just go buy something small from a store. Maybe some beer, thats easiest thing to get I think. Thanks for your response too Elro.

canada game stores? would work ;) since its a related game produte
Blah, the simplest search phrase...well I apologise for making you do something for me. However, you assisted me, and in good faith. I thank you.

Okay, so you called them and got your balance but did you ask them why the transaction was declined? They would have that information.
Elro, its called being ping pong'ed. They said there was no issue, its on NCsoft's side. So I am left being like a ping pong ball, being swatted back and forth with nothing being done. So, I will leave this issue alone.

I do wish someone official could respond regarding the creation of a prepaid coin card to replace the old time card.

I doubt NC West is going to invest the kind of money needed to make the cards, best thing you can do, advice from another 40yo, is get with the times, get a Bank Card and save yourself from all these unnecessary hassles
Z0phiel I apreciate the advice, but I will not get a credit card. I prefer cash and carry, always have. I like knowing I paid, and its done, the present purchase is mine no worries. Hassles like the one I am currently experiencing are rare. So I will wait for an official response regarding the creation of a prepaid coin card to replace the old time card, and enjoy the game as I can. I did try to support the game. I will try to support it again by other means in the future I suppose.

Take care.
no offence, but are you like 60+ ? :p

(cause my grandmas dont have those cards either ^^ )
We've answered this question previous and said that we are currently exploring additional payment methods. At this time we cannot say what they will be or when they will happen, and please understand that myself, Juji, and Cryo are not "devs" that can make this happen any faster than it already is, but rest assured it is being worked on and there will be additional payment methods in the future. For now, there are alternatives to credit cards that have worked for many players.

Pre-Paid cards are all the rave now. Services like PayPal and Serve issue you cards that are linked to your PayPal/Serve accounts and those accounts are reloadable with MoneyPaks.

Pre-Paid cards can be used when you need them and then discarded. They don't check your credit and oftentimes don't need nearly as much information as a bank would request for a bank card. You cannot overdraft a Pre-Paid card, and since it's pre-paid in the event it gets stolen or compromised your losses are minimized.

I haven't paid for any games or services with a Bank Credit or Debit card since maybe 2005. I got with the times. Have you?

If any of my credit or debit cards get comprised I'm on the hook for exact $0.00. What is this, the future?
Okay so I know you didn't like what I had to say last time I wrote in one of your threads but I'm hoping this will help...

I am Canadian and as far as I know there are no prepaid NCSoft cards to be found in any game shop. I have been in EB Games, Future Shop, and Best Buy and I have never seen these cards even when the game was pay to play. I remember trying to look for them because I thought it would have been an easier way for me to pay as well. This is just my personal experience and who knows...it might depend on what area of Canada you are in.

Unfortunately I have no experience with prepaid credit cards so I can't say anything about that.
prepaid cards are so 90s
Seriously just get a bank account and a debit card and sign up for paypal. Everything is protected by your bank.

I get you don't want to conform to society, but you can't think you're going to shop on the internet with cash. These days you want something most people go right to the internet and buy it. Hell most ebay transactions will ONLY take paypal now.

Personal checks? pffft ancient times.
Common reason why Prepaid Credit Cards gets declined with online purchases is there is no "Billing Address" registered to it. Usually you can register the card online (or phone) and assign an address so that online merchants can do the proper verification.
If any of my credit or debit cards get comprised I'm on the hook for exact $0.00. What is this, the future?

Your money is still gone until the bank decides to put it back, which can be disruptive. Services like Serve are also FDIC insured and have similar if not identical protective measures, so that's no advantage for Bank-Issued Credit/Debit cards, Lol.

I've never used a check.

Society uses pre-paid cards. Those companies are making a killing. Have you missed that?

Paypal allows the use of a Pre-Paid card tied to your Bank account and you can load up your PayPal with Money Paks. You don't have to tie your PayPal to a bank account. Did you completely miss what I wrote in my post? Amazing.

The whole point of using the PayPal/Serve + Their issued cards and loading up with MoneyPaks (or having someone transfer into that account) is to avoid dipping directly into your bank account.

If you tie your bank account to PayPal and that account is compromised (and it has happened, many times to many people) they can still transfer money straight from your bank account or even make purchases online. In that case you're better off just using your Debit or Credit card.

Pre-Paid CCs were barely used in the 90s. Their use has grown exponentially since then. 1 in 8 Americans now use Pre-Paid CCs, and I wouldn't be suprised if their use was even more common overseas. eCommerce still has lots of issues with security, among other things. There's a reason why PayPal has the Cards now, as well as Serve and most of their competitors - and allow MoneyPak loading. If hardly anyone wanted them, they'd have not bothered, but lots of people DON'T want to tie in those accounts to their Financial Institutions and want alternate (and more mainstream) ways to load and access the money in those accounts.

IRT Address... Pretty much all of those card companies require you to submit a valid address.

Meh, I'll worry about it when (if ever) it happens. Got my first credit card just a bit over 30 years ago. I don't care if banks have my person information. I've had worse ****-probings buying cars, buying houses, getting a security clearance, applying for jobs, etc. Some people are just very paranoid.

Although, I did have a glitch on my credit report many years ago. Someone used my social and bought a $400,000 RV. It was cleaned very quickly and easily, however.
I've never used a check.

Well first I wasn't talking to YOU,but now I am.

Can you not read? I SAID anything fraudulent is covered by your bank. Further more I have never added my checking account to paypal. I have my debit card and my credit card on file which are both insured by the bank and CC company. Your financial accounts can be compromised at any point anywhere. My parents got theirs compromised just by using a ATM for f's sake.

Also if you have a decent credit card company or bank issued one they ought to be calling you to check with you about any high volume activity. I know ours did when we went out of state and had a lot of high purchases going through, now we just call ahead and let them know.

I don't live in paranoia, but I am cautious, use common sense.

dont bother hoping on a bus and going to EB games, you aren't going to find time cards there, they stopped having them like november-december last year, not sure what issue you have with the pre-paid card and I'm in canada, when I bought nc coin, I had no issue with using a pre-paid credit card, I think your best bet in getting nc coin is buy timecards online
make a paypal account. add your prepaid card in the account. and try buy coins with the paypal account. it should work. at least it works for me. i cant buy nccoins directly with my prepaid. but i can with paypal
