This game is as strong as its been for years, however the recent decision to close City of Heroes has me concerned.
I know some things just don't last forever, no matter how good they are.
So what I want to know is, If Ncsoft shuts down L2 forever. do you guys ever think Ncsoft would ever allow us to some how Keep our characters somewhere?
City of Heroes was the first mmo I had ever played. I remember having so much fun just creating a character, i didn't even notice that i had played all night. This all happened in 2004, a few months later I purchased Lineage 2.
So off and on, I've been coming back. Its my comfort food. Hell, I met my wife in game. It would pain me to see the story of Aden end in a year or two, without someway of immortalizing my own character in some fashion. To always visit even after the corporation decides its not profitable to run the servers anymore. Could there be anything we could do to keep our personal character alive?

LoL, well I think what you're upset about is time invested and having it taken away by something you have no control over. The only thing you'll probably be able to do is play private servers if L2 is closed. If they shut the L2 servers down this week I'd be considering GW2 more seriously. As long as L2 is profitable it'll be around. Hell look at Ultima Online.
I wouldn't really worry about it closing. I'm a bit confused, though, about what you mean by keeping your character's somewhere... If the game goes, the data would go too.
New
Can you site these numbers.
Last I heard, our North Am version of NcSoft is loosing money in our area by the month.
If we were actually profitable, they would not have closed those operations since Lin1 is still their bread and butter in Korea.
loosing money by the month? are you talking about when it was p2p? look how many addicts there are now buying ncoin. they made more money now in f2p than p2p. L2 will keep on living till there's nothing to buy anymore.
You will find the numbers here: http://global.ncsoft.com/global/ir/quarterly.aspx
NCInteractive aka NCWest operates at a monthly loss of 2 million US dollars. This comprises all games (Guild Wars, Lineage 2 ...). The addicts buying NCoin are not sufficient to cross-finance the development for Guild Wars 2.
Please note, the numbers for NCInteractive probably don't include the man-hours used by the developers in Seoul to come up with patches for the chat spam, to remove the Boss raiding buff which prevents people from logging in etc.

Yea well, I doubt they're going to close this down yet, though it wouldn't absolutely shock me if it did happen.

I guess that the closing down of City of Heroes (http://boards.lineage2.com/showthread.php?t=244866) is the proverbial throwing off of ballast on a sinking ship, intended to keep the remaining games (Guild Wars, Lineage 2 and Aion) afloat for some time to come :)
And keep in mind, Lineage 2 is some sort of classic, like chess or go. Even if NCWest should close down one day, different solutions will be found. Maybe we could apply at the embassy of the Republic of Korea in our country for a temporary Resident Registration Number, a sort of digital visa, which makes it possible for us to play on the Korean servers. Having to show up in person and producing a valid passport would also make it easier to keep botters and Real Money Traders out :D
I do believe lineage2 is a classic, no other mmo plays like this mmo. And I am sure that its going to be here for quite some time longer. I didn't mean to come off as a doomsayer, just a fan who enjoys the franchise. I don't always agree with what they've done with the game, but I'd never want to see all the time earned just suddenly vanish. For everybody, not just me.
The actual original concern came a year ago when star wars galaxies shutdown. While I was playing city of heroes 8 years ago, I was going to play that as well, however the store I went to buy the game was out of stock.
A box with some guy in bronze armor overlooking some scenery caught my eye.
I remember thinking how I could be part of somebodies army participating in a siege that would change the economics of the entire game. And that same army turning into a hoard as they approach the land dragon anthras.
Hell I still haven't seen Anthras.

I will have to draw the line if it comes to applying for a Resident Registration Number with the US embassy for the Republic of Korea... just to play a game.

Voted best LOL quote of the year!
Just save some screenshots dude. Print em, frame em, put em up on your walls, talk to them, worship them, w/e. When it goes down, build a memorial in your back yard, tombstone and all...visitors will come from all around the world to pay their respects.
