Yes it is.. my father inlaw... just returned a 1 month old 2k Euro Laptop to Sony because Win8 went on a crazy loop(reinstalled it 4 times in past week).. and since Sony didn't offer a downgrade to Win7, he returned it and now he's going to buy a clean laptop and install the OS he wants.
Apparently Win8 got confused with his work apps.. and "UAC" crashed, making all his files impossible to access.
As I usually say.. an OS from M$ is only stable, one year after release. Stating otherwise is just pure stupidity.
Indeed what is wrong with NCSOFT this year. No Christmas free stuff - hats for example, no Christmas trees, no Christmas event, no Christmas spirit at all.

Anyway you are not right, L2 isnt working atm, by lame fault in code of last updates. Existing fix, whih is forbidden by Sace, edit game files not OS files.

A working solution is to simply turn UAC settings to Never Notify. Fixes a lot of problems with old apps.
As for this great maintenance, it means we start a new Year without a proper fix (thank you very much NCsoft). Just another one we can add to a long list of dumbest decisions of NC(Fail)soft :mad: .

1. I know people who installed Windows 8 on their $250 Compaq laptops and it went flawlessly. I recently went visit relatives down south and upgraded two of my mom's PCs to Windows 8. Both of them installed without a hitch.
Windows 8 has a built-in system restore issue. It doesn't "reinstall" itself 4 times, either. I'm not even sure that's an issue that has been logged on Microsoft's own forums.
Windows 8 was quite possibly the longest Alpha-Beta-RC of any OS Microsoft has put out. It has been quite stable since Beta releases, and uses much the same Driver Model that Vista and 7 used (this is unlike XP which went from 9x to NT and Vista which redid a lot of the driver stuff especially for graphics cards).
Game developers had more than enough time to test on Windows 8. WoW runs flawlessly on Windows 8. EQ2 runs flawlessly on Windows 8. The only games in the mainstream that are having a lot of issues, surprisingly, are those from NCSoft and especially those that use GameGuard. Aion and Lineage II both have issues logged both on NCSoft and Microsoft's sites/forums, yet none for those other MMORPG games. This isn't Microsoft's fault. NCSoft just dropped the ball here.
Lastly, Sony laptops are a bit different. You cannot install NVidia/ATI stock drivers on those PCs. You have to get your updates from Sony. They require Sony-distributed drivers. Maybe that was an issue. In either case, the Win7 drivers should install and run fine.
2. Windows 8 doesn't get confused with Work Apps. Windows 8 is Windows 7 with updated internals and a Start Screen instead of a Start Menu. Windows 7 apps run identically on Windows 8 as on Windows 7. UAC doesn't crash. Maybe you mean you set up his PC wrong and didn't migrate his account correctly on the upgrade, so he didn't have credentials to access those files or folders anymore? Again, that is user error, and the Upgrade Assistant makes it quite clear what will happen when you choose the various options.
Do you even know what UAC is?
3. The whole 1 year thing is ********. Windows 7 was stable after release. Even Windows Vista was stable unless you tried to run it on an underspec'd machines (which was common back then, as OEMs like HP were still selling 1 Core Celeron Machines with 256 MB RAM, 5400 RPM Platter Drives, and old IGPs and people thought Vista would run great on it.
If he didn't upgrade (probably not) then some of that doesn't apply. But I still think you're lying about the "reinstall 4 times." Really, it's just unbelievable for anyone who has used the OS. People are acting like Winodws 8 is completely different from Windows 7 when it's really just more of the same with a Start Screen instead of a Start Menu and the ability to run, basically, Mobile apps on a desktop OS (and they're developed using a Silverlihgt-based API/Dev Tools and sandboxed off from the rest of the OS).
Desktop Apps behave much the same way in Windows 8, except the OS is a bit more secure than Windows 7. The fact that it breaks Rootkits like GameGuard is actually a GOOD thing, but NCSoft should have had way more foresight than to not thoroughly test their game on that release knowing how Windows shipments work (most coming from new PC purchases on the consumer end, not actual upgrades) and being able to easily assume that people buying new PCs would get auto-upgraded to it.
Downgrading to Windows 7 from 8 is a waste of time for ONE app/game, because the OS is simply better than Windows 7 and other than a familiar default desktop there is pretty much nothing gained by going from 8 to 7.
Looks different != worse, and horror stories are fun to tell but you're lying through your teeth.

Windows 8 is not fresh or new in any way. Some of us have been running it for almost if not over a year and it actually RTM'd MONTHS before it released to consumers.
I'm pretty sure NCSoft's dev teams have decent PCs with VMs and MSDN Subscriptions... Nevermind you can reuse a fresh trial version in a VM by backing up a fresh install and simply deleting it when the 90 days or whatever are up...

Proly gonna be the same as with the accessory bug, they'll use player fix again. It was bound to happen, since they lay off competent and keep the incompetent staff on.

Problem is, NCWEst can't apply patches not officially provided by the Korean devs.
Now if our team could be so kind to forward this to NC Korea DEV team, and also tell them this: Put back old libraries, you incompetent *******.
As for the problem it's was due to NC Korea changing the libraries to use an older windows kernal; in this case Windows 7 instead of Windows 8. Not really hard to fix but takes a little time to work on the various libraries and how they are linked.

And we've already covered the 64-Bit thing in another thread. Again, embarrassing yourself. You can search to see where you're wrong. It works.
Like I said, every other mainstream MMORPG runs fine with the same system requirements listing because their developers have a clue and started testing their clients on Windows 8 6+ months ago and made sure it worked on release.
NCSoft is "special."
The game only runs well if you had an old client/another machine that wasn't updated and ripped Engine.DLL off that machine. For those people who multi-box on one machine and run W8/64B, they are SoL unless someone sends them that file.
