Battle Tournament Message From L2 Team

Hi everyone,

We would like to take some time to reflect on the current Battle Tournament event and address some of the issues that participants have been experiencing.

First of all, it was really important for us to run this tournament. The last (and only) Battle Tournament was run in 2006, more than 7 years ago. It was hugely popular and we really wanted to bring the excitement back to the community, and see how much interest a PvP event would generate.

And we were not disappointed. Registrations greatly exceeded our expectations (we anticipated around 60-70 teams to register, and we had more than double this number!), and the tournament was already fully booked after only a few days. We immediately shortened the registration period by closing it early, but it quickly became clear to us that we had to find a way to give a chance to all the teams that registered but were too late since it was on a first come first serve basis.

This is why we came up with the Team Deathmatch event, and while the argument can be made that it was not the fairest way to decide between the teams, it was the only one we could execute in time. The battle on Naia which had the most teams fighting (30+) lasted over an hour and a half which was pretty amazing. Say what you will, but watching over an hour of non-stop PvP is pretty entertaining 

We also would like to say a word about the setup of the tournament. We wanted this tournament to be as fair as possible and have everyone on an equal ground so that it would be more about skills instead of gear or character customization. So we decided pretty early on that all participants would have pre-generated characters with the exact same equipment, same race and no skill or gear enchants would be allowed. We also settled on the 1 healer / party rule, since there would be no enchanted gear or skill this made sense as the damage output of all characters would be lower than what you can usually experience in your daily PvP on your server. This also stirred up the teams by having them come up with new tactics and put them outside of their comfort zone. While there was some skepticism from the community at the beginning, it proved quite successful since then and we do not regret choosing this setup.

Then the tournament started. The first weekend was a real marathon due to the large number of teams fighting (32 teams total between Saturday and Sunday) and lasted over 8h for each day. We also livestreamed all the matches which was a first for us but we were really happy with the results. So far our channel (twitch.tv/lineage2us) has had 200,000+ views and we had around 500-1,000 concurrent viewers for each match. This is telling us that there is a huge interest from the community in the livestreaming of events, and we will definitely do more of that in the future.

Now, we would like to address some of the issues that we experienced during the tournament, and explain some of the decisions that were made:

• Force-attack:
o During the very first match of the tournament (Genocide vs Stronghold) we experienced an issue where one of the teams had to force attack. We quickly decided to do a rematch, which both teams agreed upon, and the rematch went well. We found out later that it was due to team members flagging on each other before the beginning of the battle, so we made sure to check that in every subsequent match.

• Losing buffs with noblesse blessing:
o The same day we experienced our first real game bug during the xa0 vs Sauce match, although we couldn’t confirm it until later in the day after we were able to review the logs. The healer from team Sauce lost all his buffs upon dying even though he had noblesse buff on. Once we were able to confirm the bug we decided to do a rematch the next week. This is quite a rare bug, and has been submitted to the development team for review.

• Porting outside of the arena:
o This one was tricky. The rule was that if you intentionally ported outside of the arena, then you would be disqualified. After the first qualification round it became clear that we had to extend the arena and be more lenient about this rule because many players were having issues staying inside mostly due to skills that can push you outside (which was not a disqualifier move), and we did. A few players did blink outside of the arena during the 7vs7, but since it was clearly not intentional and wasn’t a game changer we ruled against disqualification. There was one incident involving a member of Team Enmity during their 1vs1 match who blinked outside of the arena, and we ruled in favor of a disqualification because this had a lot more weight in a 1vs1 match.

• Resurrection skill not working during Quarter-Finals
o During most of the quarter-final matches, except the last one, resurrection skill wasn’t working. We had a lot of trouble identifying the issue because of conflicting and inaccurate reports. We first thought that resurrection wasn’t working at all, based on some players’ complaints, but since we could see participants resurrect during the match we weren’t sure if there really was an issue or not. We were also on a tight schedule and couldn’t stop the tournament indefinitely based on a possibly wrong assumption, so we carried on while still trying to identify what the problem was. Toward the last match of the day, we found out that one of the configuration files for the tournament was incorrect, and effectively prevented the use of resurrection skills (feather of blessing was still working though). Now we had to make a tough decision because re-doing all the quarter-final matches was definitely not an option due to schedule and resources constraints. Since the issue affected both teams equally, we ruled that the matches were valid and there would be no rematch. We fully understand that it may have prevented some teams from executing their battle strategy and may have caused some confusion. This decision was very painful for us, but please understand this was the only sensible choice we had at the time.

• Skill cooldown reset
o So the rule was that you would buff before the match starts, and your skill cooldown would be reset during the 5sec countdown before the match. We never prevented teams from using specific skills or buffs before the match started; the only rule was that you couldn’t start attacking until the end of the countdown. This had led to teams using 2 salvations (one casted before the countdown, and another one during the match) and we were ok with that. But this wasn’t restricted to salvation only, and any other skill could be used that way. During the last Quarter-Final match, team dismiss used Battle Rhapsody just before the match started and the skill was reset during the countdown, allowing them to use the skill a second time during the match. This was definitely not against the rules, so their match was valid, but we did agree after the match that we should try to find a way to prevent this from happening. So during the semi-finals, we removed the skill cooldown reset during the countdown, and this will be the case going forward in all matches.

All that being said, we had a blast running this tournament. The response from the community has been fantastic, and it clearly shows how much excitement there is around PvP events for Lineage II. It will definitely motivate us to run more PvP-based events in the future. We would also like to thank all the Lineage II team members and everyone else that contributed in one way or another to this event, working 5 weeks straight with no day off and being in the middle of a relocation (our team is moving to California this week) definitely made it a big challenge, but we pulled it off.

So come watch the last two matches on Saturday and Sunday, and cheer for your favorite team. Great show guaranteed!

If the matches were actually constrained to their 5 minute timer (many of them went over 5 minutes as recorded in the official replays), MrTish would have already concluded the match as a draw. Though it still would have been fine if he was DQ'd after the fact for accidentally porting out. The tank should not have been given time for his skills to reset and participate in another match as his previous match was a draw.
You skipped through the most important issue of the 1v1,
" There was one incident involving a member of Team Enmity during their 1vs1 match who blinked outside of the arena, and we ruled in favor of a disqualification because this had a lot more weight in a 1vs1 match."

That happened after the 5 minute mark. Care to explain why all the 1v1 matches were going well over 5 minutes even though the rules clearly say they'd last 5 m ins? And why next day NC Staff said, the matches would be "better timed" today?

Why did the teleport happening after the 5 min mark didn't carry any weight over NC's decision for the DQ? Or the fact that about half the matches had someone accidentally porting out too? Why change your mind about the rules during the 7v7 then randomly changing it back during the 1v1s.

Also I'm pretty sure the response was fantastic while matches worked as intended, NCStaff seemed human and people asking for a fair rematch were granted one (following your own logic, all the teams had the same chance at having the noble buff be bugged out so why did that team get special treatment? ), but then QF happened and I'm pretty sure the response turned into fantastically bad.
Thanks for the history lesson NC, but you did not really address anything. You said how you went about a few things, that is not helping anyone feel better about this.

You also failed to mention your improper time keeping, which would have made the disqualification for MrTish of Enmity in the first place invalid.

In the end it was still unfair to a few teams and that is how it's going to remain. I understand there won't be rematches, especially when your staff decided to proceed on and ignore it the day it happened.
During the last Quarter-Final match, team dismiss used Battle Rhapsody just before the match started and the skill was reset during the countdown, allowing them to use the skill a second time during the match. ok great, but u KNEW that rez was not working . This makes the match impossible to play and a GM with in game knowledge of the BR skill would know this was unfair.

yes u mean the last match of the day which was mine? where the team used double BR and we couldnt rez? rofl

over all guys i am VERY dissapointed in how this was handled. and the lack of game knowledge from GMs is also very disapointing. they need to know the game mechanics better and know whats a "buff" and whats an offensive attacking skill...

@ Cryo:

I am dissapointed how u would not help people test the rez on the day we said it was not working ( lootness group asked and you said no) also pming teams information that was not given out to all of the BT teams is not quite ethical either in keeping this a fair fight. Just saying you might need to be retrained

anyhow no reason to watch the last matches, nova won it all, and my team got it up the..... and lootness group too.
Pretty much this event was a sweep by chronos and NCsoft robbed us of the glory ! oh well, only 14 names gold on chronos instead of 28 :)

@ BT rules:
The 7vs7 Team Death Match will continue functioning as they have:
· Two teams will compete per match.
· 7 members per team.
· First team to kill every member of the opposition wins!

I was never killed in the 2nd 7v7, therefore this win does not qualify. Care to explain how they won when they didnt kill every team member?
Still nice to see such a post instead of NCSoft moderating all posts about wrong things, claiming that everything was ok.

Of course they would do that if there is the need.
of course eminty would of beat u if they could of rezed

GMs try to respond to my post, thanks.

I also did not die in my 7v7 vs team Superior in the quarter finals. I went into hide. While in hide and my group was down the GMs declared the match over. Can I say I was going to win it for my team? No, of course not. :) Just another example of not sticking with strict set rules.

I believe you guys at the time were considering the feasibility of standing up on feather at the same time when the match was declared finished?

Yes, then the match was cut short. We were discussing getting up together using feathers, while I was in hide.

Though technically yes both teams being affected by it makes it "fair". It is by no means a fair competition. Conflicting reports aside, as soon as there was a complaint you should have halted the matches and done a test. While yes it would have wasted a lot of time, redoing the matches. It would have been the right thing for you to do. Now you have yourself stuck in 'our hands are tied' because we sent people forward in the competition. So instead of having to redo a couple matches, you've lost a whole weekends worth of hard work.

I'm sure community would have stood behind you if you admitted the mistakes, swallowed your pride and said yes, well have to redo things.
Now you're left with a debacle of an event, and I'm sure most people will look to other companies for gaming events instead of this one.
To be honest, when GMs said Finish, i was 100% sure they were doing what they NORMALY do when activity is suspicious and they need players to stop fighting. So i saw the finish and stopped, then they declared dismiss winners. then instantly we started to complain about the double BR, and instead of assisting us , cryo said too bad ...

this all could of been solved on day 1

this no rez set up favors those teams that have a DPS group ( nuker dagger archer warrior ) vs the group that has survivability ( groups that involve a summoner which is not a dps class)
The gold name reward status just needs to be changed honestly. The problem with 56 gold names is the winners of them feel a little less special. That is all. I sure as hell see no problem with 56 players having them. People quit, they deserve them, we won't have another battle tournament for years if ever.

I disbelieve the winners are really going to be that upset if NCSoft rewards the quarter final players as well. If that can't be done, it should only be the 7 people in first place.
Thank you for an utterly useless post Vali.

Alright so where's the excuse for disqualifying MrTish after the five minute mark? Failure to uphold your own rules by issuing a DQ after a half-assedly timed five minutes is, in your own words, a game changer. There were several other players who went outside of the arena, by the way, in both the quarter- and semifinal matches. Why was nothing done about those, hmm? We're all still waiting on the justification for why matches were so poorly timed, too. "We forgot to start the timer when the match started so we just winged it and hoped no one would notice?"

This issue was brought up after the first 7v7 match of the day, and the Enmity team even asked Cryo to test rezzing while the party duel was in effect and he ignored them. Had the staff actually looked to see if resurrection skills were used instead of saying "well we see people standing up" and assuming it was working properly, a single rematch at the beginning would have been no big deal and the problem would have been resolved immediately, but instead it was allowed to continue throughout the day.
Since I was never answerd in PMs:

During the course of the 04/13/13 Battle tournament the following incidents took place which deserve consideration for a rematch:

1) During the relay match between team "xa0" and team "dismiss", the summoner "dismiss" had received full ISS enchanter buffs on his pets during the fight. This activity is in direct violation of the terms of the relay match in which only a set amount of buffs are provided to participants. This behavior was confirmed during the course of the fight between ishmila and 'dismiss' where 'dismiss's servitor cast hate on ishmila and ishmila was able to actively see the pets buffs due to target locking.
I would cite the events during the match between team "xa0" and team "Sauce" (04/30/13 12:00 PM PST), where NCJuji stated that he was able to confirm all skills/buffs used during a match:

--

Hello Everyone,

After reviewing the logs for the matches, we saw that the healer Bettybangzer on Team Sauce did indeed lose their Noblesse Blessing buff along with all their ISS enchanter buffs when they died. There were no skills from Team xa0 that canceled out the noblesse buff and the skill was not removed from the player. Due to this issue, we will be holding a rematch only for this match. Both teams will be contacted through email to schedule the rematch.

Thank you for your understanding!

Based on this account we would suggest that confirming this claim would be within an already demonstrated precedent for examining participant state.

2) During the 7v7 match between team "xa0" and team "dismiss" the match ended before all members of team "xa0" were defeated. The terms of the 7v7 format is that a winner is declared when all members of the opposing team are defeated. As ishmila on team xa0 was not killed the match was not over and it was an error by the NCSoft ending the match prematurely.
I have hosted the match on youtube so you can easily see what is being alleged:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnyw777UYz4

3) During the 1v1 relay match between team "xa0" and team "dismiss" a game glitch caused the poison zone cast by iZee to debuff/dot himself. It is a game glitch for a an othel rogue to be affected by his own poison zone cloud.

4) During the first and last 7v7 group battle between team xa0 and team dismiss, the dismiss team exploited a mechanic of the Battle Tournament format whereby long reuse skills such as Crazy Nocturne and Battle Rhapsody were cast prior to the match starting and were immediately reset. We assert that the intent of the skill reset period is to ensure that skills used out of the arena which may be on cool down are available for the match. This was further demonstrated when NC Cryo removed salvation buffs which had been pre-cast on several members of a team that was competing in the tournament prior to the match starting. Because this clearly demonstrates the intent of the skill reset period we assert that casting Battle Rhapsody / Crazy Nocturne by team dismiss was in bad faith.

5) The resurrection skills by the Iss Enchanter and Aeore healers were not functioning correctly during several of the matches including (specifically) the group 7v7's between team xa0 and team dismiss. Limited testing done by NCsoft staff at the time would have only seen Resurrection feathers (item skills) triggering allowing players to stand up. We believe that a side effect of the 7v7 relay triggered this scenario and that this tainted the xa0/dismiss match as key class skills/roles to the healer/enchanter were prevented.

Given that my team "xa0" has been put under a magnifying glass during the team "Sauce" (04/30/13 12:00 PM PST) incident and were forced to undergo a rematch we insist that other teams be held to the same standard.

Address these 5 grievances NCSoft!

The inability to use RESURRECT skills combined with dismiss abusing Battle Rhapsody exacerbated the problem beyond what is fair at all. If we could have rez'd then the double rhapsody could have been managed.
The more you think about Quarter Final Saturday, the less fair the competition was lol... sorry but those who won that day did not do so fairly.

- Sure no one could res, but certain teams had their strengths and weakness in different areas. Some teams NEEDED to be able to res.

- Matches called early when not all of the pariticpants had died in a 7v7, or used all their feathers.

- Using game changing skills multiple times such as: battle rhapsody, not normally usable a second time by a single ISS enchanter.

- Single disqualification incident of obvious accident and ignored on multiple other occasions. Also after the time limit for this players fight.

- Many players lost fights they should have won in the 1v1 relay matches, because the matches went to 6, or 7 minutes and GMs did not time them correctly.

I realize no one is perfect, but come on NC... Rematches should have been granted for sure and were not. The whole day should of been redone on Sunday... but I know that's a pretty big thing to admit to, which is why nothing happened.

Honestly gold names should be allowed to those quarter final participants, they are all just as deserving as semi-final people. You cannot at all say semi-final players deserve them more. Only other fair option is to just have the first place team receiving them, many people entered to have this opportunity and were robbed of their chance.
I understand you people if you are frustrated, because the lost matches by bugs, but understand, that we can say it was the first Battle Tournament (2006 was long ago:)).

I'm sure the next PvP event will better.

I did enjoy a lot to watch these matches. The Surviver matches was extremely good really one of funniest PvP fight in the Lineage II.

I do not know a lot about those players who play not on the Naia server, but on another servers, but was nice to see them too.

Some of players from Naia made me very huge and positive surprise, there was Ptitlaby who is good friend, but did think about him, that mainly got his reputation as active forum user and translator, but gave me evidence, that in the Lindvior update under his hands the Ponies will become to Warhorses:D.

There was after Masmerio who is as I know not from the old Naia players and his Main Class neither Healer, but played as Healer extremely good.

While there was the Dismiss Team, the Naia players often shoots to them, that they are cheater, overpowered etc. and just win because this.
But I think on this tournament mainly iLucie, Arrivederci and Oni (octep) did show, that they are really skilled players and to play against them isn't an easy PvP.

You know guys was good to see, that how hundreds of viewers who did flame the another matches, the game or the NC, just did stay quite when these guys started their matches and after some seconds of silent from the viewers became fans who did cheer for those guys and did say how amazing PvPs they did plays.

So even both the team Superior and Dismiss lost at the end, but they did achieve huge success in the community and got respect and reputation through this tournament.
I think this was the real victory and these guys are the real winners of this tournament.

Finally, thanks to L2 Team to make this event and did work through 5 weeks without free days.

I hope in California you will have some time to relax on the beach or in a cool cinema in Hollywood!:)
when those nova guys will stop to cry for everything?

This match was hilarious, I was too busy laughing at someone riding horse during pvp that I didn't cast a single skill with my bear, where do you see any "hate" icon on Ishmila debuffs? I understand he has big ego and try to make up stories to save his e-reputation. You guys need to calm down and realise you are whinning since few days, I sincerely hope you will move on because it's getting sad.

Thanks to NC team for organising this tournament, it was interesting to play under original and unusual conditions. Hopefuly we will see more events like this.
Everything I have stated has been confirmed.

What remains is what NCSoft will do about it.
Everything I have stated has been confirmed.

Should probably just collect all the screenshots/vid captures/ posts of NC just not caring and share them with all of the other gaming sites/communities. Maybe that will get NCs attention.
And under the rug all the issues go! I bet yall are glad you invested in that NCcoin.
You KNEW the rez was not working.

You REFUSED to test it. EVERY team told you, you can see it on your own videos, people pmd you telling you, how did you find out after? are you stupid? They asked you to test it right there before a match and your clever answer was "no".

You also said "WHO CARES" to double BR then backtracked on that the next day. Who cares? seems YOU do again.

You BROKE your own rules and expect respect? Disgusting they made you write this Vali, in your first weeks here and they are already making you be a shield for their mistakes.

At least you know you messed up and it will be forever a way to taint those who you "reward" by your actions. You devaluated the value of the gold name through this announcement.

But thanks for the answer, it was all I wanted. Now we know you do Bad Tournament.

And the response of the community hasn't been fantastic, don't kid yourself, each match is watched by less and less people and each thread is more and more complains to the point they have reached your Facebook walls about your bad customer support. It had potential, you ruined it.

This is actually not the truth. The rule was you could not "start" before the fight. Attacking was never mentioned, therefore the rule was left open to interpretation. This vagueness led some teams to believe anything was okay (dismiss party) and others to assume that if you did ANYTHING, you would be DQ'd (everyone else). This was obviously dismiss trying to bend the rules as far as possible, combined with NC's lack of foresight in providing clear rules.

Source: http://www.lineage2.com/battle-tournament/1_about.php (look at rule #5)

You would be better off to apologize for the vague rule, and to have rematched that fight.

But whatever =/

I feel pity that Vali, the new guy, has to fall on the sword and make this announcement. Every single member of the NC team knows that the xa0 dismiss matchs were a farce, and are too proud to admit it. The Enmity Superior 1v1 matches were equally as screwed up as well.

At a minimum, I hope NC learns from their mistakes and does not repeat them the next time around (2019?).
Let's make this easy .

Rematch the 7v7 on Saturday before any matches for xa0 vs dismiss. The winner can then play for the 3/4 slot.

Even dismiss group agreed to a rematch
that's what the new Hawkeye human should be , busy out sniper stance and pull out a sniper rifle and pick people off at 2k range.

but honestly, rematch this Saturday
While I watch BT and people playing without 3rd tools we see the complete diference of PvP between "event server" and the regular servers (daily PvP / sieges).
Not auto-target, no celestical-cut, no auto-use-warrior-hp-pot, no-party-protection....
I remember old and good ******** times, where bots are usable only in PvE; in this days the automated PvP made the complete kill of the game
Good job all people.

This is the real bazooka boy in regular pvp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVbM-dZqRU4

If possible, explain how to auto-change-stances to cast certain skills.
Question to: Ishmila, Diego and Vali.
This post does not remotely cover all the issues that have been brought to your attention. The tournament was inconsistent in the ruling, and if your purpose of this BT was to make it a reoccurring event, then you need to set that straight. Show us that your team is capable of hosting such an event again, because if you don't, then why should we waste our weekends, late night practicing, and going through the aggravation and frustration of participating in a event like this again.
Good Lord,

Listen to all the crybaby whiners!

Somebody needs to call their momma and get a clue about things work in this mean old world. Games are buggy, refs make bad calls, and most importanly LIFE ISN'T FAIR. You got a battle tournament, you participated, and if you lost, MOVE ON! You still have the game...go play it. Battle tournament is like an event, and in most NCSoft events, there's a possibility for random misfortune and for others to benefit where you lose out. Now if your ego's won't allow you to shoulder a little disappointment, and you just have to scream bloody murder until your virtual honor is restored, then I'd have to hazard a guess that outside of the game world your probably some 30+ years old, diaper wearing, suicide cases that's still sending threatening letters to FOX because Star Trek TNG was cancelled.

Take it like a man!
LIFE ISN'T FAIR.

Doesn't mean you can't attempt to make it so :)
There are some really competitive people here who spent many hours preparing and building up to this and they got screwed over, and it looks to be on all sides and two matches in particular (dismiss match, enmity match). I'm impressed with the maturity displayed for that, I would have had to wait 7+ days before being calm and reflective about it if it happened to me.

I'd like a bigger number of participants where something like the team deathmatch gets bigger or on an extra weekend or two. It seems NC did amazing with doing this pvp event and picking the participants but legit parameters shows how some clans are better and some are not, and it would be fun to see more people playing that out in more pvp events with legit parameters and no Z-r or w/e.

The only problem is who's competitive enough to put up with some very terrible rule keeping (and probably an, understandably, multiple weekends-spanning event). I hope Nc fixes the rules consistency, because there are some major problems and Nc is not even addressing them (dismiss match, 5 min timer, and very questionable enmity DQ) which makes it really scary for other participators and hopeful participators.

Or go outside, have fun and forget about some pixels prizes perhaps...

Haha, fair enough:D
I didn't see one thingy in all this wall of text. The tournament from a viewer point of view was extreamly boring. The most boring event ever! You should think about some commentators, guests invitation (if possible some players, who are actually playing this game) and may be some dialog with viewers.
Are there any plans for a new Battle Tournament?
