healer is cool. best chronos :) other servers are bit empty.And prepare your wallet ) to have good toon you need buy a lot of items from l2store. :( Its not same 12 eur/month... its more likely 400eur and more / month. :D
Oh dear, you do not need to spend a single cent for this game if you do not want to and you are satisfied with what you can get in-game.
Watch question-mark dialogs, it tells you about Path to Awakening which will give free gear and recommended locations to hunt till level 85. Get a mentor, plenty of 85+ players are desperately seeking mentees because they benefit from it as you level and prom.
Most played servers are Naia (EU timezone) and Chronos (GMT +...something timezone) because they were created by merging legacy Lineage 2 servers before game went free to play. Most people play there, chance of finding clan or random group is highest on those two.
As for classes ... hard to say. Basically every class is played. Archers now got some boost in terms of damage, everybody is rolling summoners because they rule and rogues have couple tricks in their sleeves too. I would say Tyrr Maestro is one of more unique clases because it's a crafter and can only be levelled from Dwarven Artisan. Also Orcish Iss Dominator is very rare because currently it can buff only clan members which makes them hard to level outside any clan (need support from clan). Tanks and healers are core of every party and you won't be disappointed rolling them. Of course it depends on your preferences and playstyle.
First round from where do you play. Second round do you like to play instanced or open field gameplay.
If you play from America or Australia and you are instance focused choose the Chronos if you like the open field XP choose the Bartz, there is the population lower you will find more free XP places.
If you play from Europe or Asia or Africa and like the instances choose the Naia, if you prefer to open field xp than the Magmeld or Shilen.
About classes, choose the class what you like, this will help mostly to enjoy the game.
Some people wrote before, that there are bots on the servers, this right, not as much as the trolls write down, but you will see more too. First of all in the 1-90 level areas, but in these levels the leveling speed still fast, so I guess you won't have real big problem with them.
When you arrive to 97+ levels, you won't really see bot trains on these spots.
A good tipp, do not read the forum, there are many trolls here, who makes disappoint you when you try to read different stuffs on the forum.
If you like to play in solo good offer to buy a Prestige Pack from the L2 Store it is cheap and give good bonuses.
Only pick a healer if you like getting blamed for others' flaws. If that's how you get your jollies, then be a tank instead. Thin line between love and hate either way, but at least pre-Awakening tanks actually are fun to level. Can't say the same for healers until after Awakening.

My two cents to you, go play something else. This game isn't very fun for casual play, and hardcore mode will force you to consider spending money or botting or no-lifing it (probably a combination of all 3). As someone else mentioned, this isn't the 15 dollar a month game it used to be (or even 45 if u ran some boxes). There are quite a few ppl easily dropping 10-20k USD per year into their toons now.
Of course some may feel differently, but I'm giving you an honest opinion from an end-game point of view.
With that said, if you still want to make a fresh start then go to Bartz. It seems to still have a lot of under geared/lower level players in "high end" clans, so you wouldn't be as terribly far behind as you would be on Chronos/Naia. As for class, Archer is FOTM DD still, ISS/HEALER/Tank are always in demand. Make an 85 ISS to serve as your own buff box, and then screw around with some classes to 85 to see what you like. Takes a few days to a week to go 1-85, and the gear is free up until then.
