i see no reason to use anything more than a 4 button mouse for most games anyway. 12 is if you intent to play like an amputee. or are one.
thx for the opinion. Personally, I like click to move too.
I play with 12button mouse in FFXIV, because I use more than 12 skills and the easy access for shift+skillKey and ctrl+skillKey allows me up to 36 skills while having full movability.
It was the same with Tera.
Although I do agree with you in it does seem a bit overkill for most, but oh well what can I say. I like options. The more options you have, the more adaptability you have to be a better player :)
Using WSAD to move pretty much 90% of the time, since I use 'enter chat' option for my gameplay and 1-5 buttons as main keys, with E R Q F C Z on important stuff and F1-F4 as additional.
Can't really see any other ways to use WSAD, if you using F1-F5 as main keys, your finger tips will be too spread out.
The reason I ask is because I'm going to be working on making a new game, but am not sure yet (for the movement) if I want characters to use ASWD, click-to-move, or maybe both...
ASWD:
Characters who target something, and turn to face target upon use of attack skill. Running backwards with "s" key will make character run towards the screen (instead of walking half speed backwards). Then the usual, while holding right mouse button down, you can strafe with "a" and "d", or use those two keys as turn keys when right mouse button is not held.
I'm thinking screen should not move with character and be independent upon movement. Or I can make screen move with character optional, as well as ASWD and Click-to-move optional.
Click-to-move:
Basically your Lineage 2 movement, only the pathing won't have all the bugs L2 has.
I hate click to move. It is much less functional than WASD movement, creates problems where it can't differentiate between targeting and clicking to move, is less responsive than WASD movement, creates movement that is slower than WASD movement, doesn't allow players to circle or strafe as fast as WASD movement.
Basically click to move is inferior to WASD movement in every way but one, click to move allows you to play the game with one hand whereas WASD usually requires 2 if you want to PvP at a decent level.

With the Naga mouse in everyone's possession, if there was a new game release that followed the old lineage 2 model (prelude), which would you prefer?
Click to move
AWSD to move
This is like as dinosaur issue, very old game engines couldn't handle mouse movement/input smoothly and WASD is also somewhat emulates old game pad's ( think NES and you will get it ) so was the favored method long ago, the only reason it hung on for awhile is people are resistant to change at first, but once click to move was out there on a wide scale it won most over, and people starting out with it as a base system would laugh at the WASD system if they ever tried to re implement it on a wide scale. Even old school games that had WASD as its base like EQ/EQ2, or WoW which had WASD or arrow key's as base choice added in click to move when they could, and leave the other's in as option's for the dinosaur's more comfortable with that format.
You said it best, click to move gives you far more option's, freeing up key's to do other thing's. Gaming keyboard's and mice just add to those option's, and people like option's/choices. Only people out there that would choose WASD as a base system are just the dinosaur's that were used to that as a base and never took to the change when it came because some people at their core just can't accept change. Think of say disabled up to paralysed as well people, once click to play was the base system at the core of most engines and games, this enabled them to play as well ( there's even someone on these forum's that's paralysed that uses a mouth click/blow types setup that would be if not impossible, much more difficult to the point of useless if WASD was the system) so there's that as well.
Like you said, it add's option's, why would anyone want to backslide and limit themselves ? I like nostalgia to a point, doesn't mean I think we should turn back time and make Pong and Zork the base concept for all games now does it ?:cool::cool:

That's just because L2 is very old and while they have smoothed out most of the bug's, at its core those still exist, this isn't true anymore as anything close to even modern ( say 2010 up ) has base modeling and dynamic's that face, strafe and circle depending on what you were targeting, not movement mode, besides most games still include WASD as well to give you option's, just isn't the best way as base system, click to move open's many more option's, or you prefer your mouse hand to be doing only 10% of the work ( target and your done besides a special here and there or pickup ) when as click and move you have added option's, and with newer mice ( and new is relative here, they have had gaming mice a long time now, they just keep adding option's ) and now your work load can be shifted at will between hand's as you desire.
Give the people both options, like in Aion.
Exactly, even though now games are at their core click to move based, the WASD or arrow key's are still usable, nothing is limited, just add's more option's/convenience for player's.
