As a returning player

Can someone give me a straight up example of how this whole subclass thing works now?

Let's say I am a Phantom Ranger at the moment

When I reach Awakening, will I be forced into Yul Ghost Sentinel or do I get a choice? For instance, can I go straight for Yul Trickster?

If I am forced into Yul Ghost Sentinel, am I allowed to sub Trickster then?

This whole new system is really confusing. Thank you for your help.

Each class awaken into its corresponding class, so Ghost Sentinel -> Yul Ghost Sentinel.

Otherwise you can buy a chaos essence from the store and change the GS into a Yul Trickster with DE appearance and stats.

And yes, a Yul GS can dual class Yul Trickster.

Oh. That is extremely enlightening and simple and clear. Lol. Thank you.
