With the level cap being removed next week I was wondering what the state of the current player base is level-wise.
I've nearly finished 99->99 100% and I've gotta say it wasn't nice, considering the new XP curve I'm wondering how many people will actually make it to 100, let alone 102+.
98-99 = ~ 00.94 trillion xp
99-100 = ~ 04.20 trillion xp
100-101 = ~ 02.30 trillion xp
101-102 = ~ 35.0 trillion xp!!!
Considering 99-100 is 4x 98-99, and people struggle getting 99. Then 102 is 8x 99-100 or 35x 98-99, I'm wondering how many people will actually make it.
After continuously but very casually playing since 2007 my highest characters are lvl 92 :D
But that's not really the problem. The problem is in Korea, where literally no new players are attracted to the game. All newly made accounts over there soon turn out to be Chinese RMT bots. And since there are no new players, the developers consider it as a waste of resources to develop content for lower levels. On the contrary - in the hope of deterring RMT bots they are making life as difficult as possible for low level players. And since low level content is unattractive, no new players start on the game (unlike in Lineage 1, where there is a constant stream of fresh blood).
Trying to keep the few remaining veterans playing and paying by offering additional endgame content is a valid approach when resources are limited. But a game that is not attractive in its own right and in the here and now, but constantly has to refer to the glorious days of the 2004 Bartz Liberation War is bound to die.
Well at least they could add in store lvl 90 character for 5$ or 10$. Maybe that would attract fresh blood). But I understand that means even easier gameplay for bots.
NCKorea's main revenue comes from selling game time points for 1000 Won (about 1 US dollar) per hour, with discounts when you buy more. The green vouchers about 2/3 down here: http://nshop.plaync.com/lineage2/play/list
Those game time points are consumed from lvl 85/Awakening onwards (up to lvl 85 the game is free to play). Ferine can probably give you the exact numbers, but when we assume that leveling from 85 to 90 takes around 200 hours, while keeping in mind that the game time is ticking down as soon as a player enters a non-peace zone, i.e. also when he or she is PvPing and not leveling (Sieges, Olympiad etc.), a lvl 90 character would have to be sold for around 250 dollars to make it profitable for the company when compared to characters leveled by players themselves.
By the way, they have this payment system in all Asian NCsoft territories (NCKorea, NCTaiwan, NCJapan; China is licensed out and different), so the problem concerns the majority of players worldwide. The only long-term solution is to go back to a pay-to-play system from lvl 1, like for example the Russian version of Lineage 2 Classic, maintaining and constantly refreshing a small but select player base. But as said above, for that there must be attractive low-level content in its own right, and not just the race to 105 and endgame PvP. They could for example set it up so that Gludio Territory can not be entered by characters of lvl 40 or above, Dion not by characters of lvl 50 or above etc., so that people can have undisturbed low-level Sieges and fight among themselves over low-level Bosses. But there will never be the money to finance such a major overhaul of the game. So death it is :D
There is no fire left. The longer it takes to level, the less fun I have, and the more drops are nerfed so the less stuff I see on the ground, the less fun I have. NC has basically carved out all the fun from the game.
Hmm, well only 15 votes, but only 1/3 of the people who voted are below 99, which I guess is a good indication people are ready for lvl 100+.
I wonder how much longer the game will last without adding back drops, adena, or any reason to XP apart from gaining levels?
I know personally I'll probably hit 101 on main, maybe 101 on dual if Wynns are actually improved, then get fed up with the level 102+ bots kicking my *** and just stop playing.
Hmm, well only 15 votes, but only 1/3 of the people who voted are below 99, which I guess is a good indication people are ready for lvl 100+.
There is also the possibility that the people who are below level 99 either don't check the forums very much, if at all, or don't answer surveys on the forums very much, if at all. So this number could be much larger.
And I don't think ready for is the right word so much as ever going to get to lvl 100+.
99/99/80/80 on my main and staying that way. I busted my butt at times since 2004. Minimal use of xp pots since GoD. Never botted, never will. But my grinding days are over. I have no ambition to continue trying to level up any more. I was so happy I made it to the top, and they take it away. Screw that. Not spending a penny more.... and still not sure if I even have the motivation to play much anymore anyways. Just saying.

Well,if the skills are learned at level 101,then you may consider "griding" up to 101 and then slow down.
I heard they will re-introduce a "level damage penalty" between levels, but i'm not sure tho. That would make game more balanced (a "same" geared othell at levels 85 or 99 land the SAME DAMAGE if hitting the same target) but that would mean a level 105 will be far stronger then a 100...but we already know, only our pro "legits" will hit level 101+,i'm quite sure i will (eventually) stop at 101 just for the new skill, doing some casual exp sometimes.
Almost 4 years in Naia with xHaseo toon and i'm 99 (20%) 96/80/80...this should say everything.

You would probably get a more realistic impression of the level distribution if you took screenshots of the crowds around the Olympiad Manager and count how many of them have AP sickles around their name. When you compare those with Korean screenshots (http://lineage2.plaync.com/board/image/list) from around June 25, 2014, when the level cap was lifted over there, you will see that in Korea almost everybody was already 99 with 16 AP at that time.
But as I said above, the real problem is that only 1/3 of the people who voted are below 99. In a healthy server ecology you would expect a large number of players in lower levels, getting less and less as more and more give up due to the ever increasing demands of the grind. What we have, both in Korea and at NCWest, is not a healthy server ecology.

Actually the AP Sickles aren't a great measure of how many people are already maxed out on XP, simply how many people have full AP/Skills. When I hit 16 AP I was at about 30% XP, people seem to be around 30-50% XP when hitting 16 AP. As we know 99-100 is the same as doing 1-99 2x or 99-100 2x. A person with 16 AP will still have at least 1-99 grind to do all over again before they are ready to hit 100 (250 hours no runes)!
Without XP runes and vit pots people are looking at 0.2%/hr in a decent xp group at 99. To make the XP a little more bearable with a destiny pack (+100% xp for a month) and a single vit pot per hour you are looking at spending $3 per hour + $60 a month, giving 0.6%/hr at 99. That's $540 to hit 100 in 166 hours playing a minimum of 6 hours a day for a full month.
Of course it's nothing compared to some of the old grind, making 0.3%/hr in the low 70s when the cap was 75, or 0.1%/hour at 79 when the cap was 80, however back then 80% of the remaining population simply turned to PvE bot programs, which I imagine will become even more prolific amongst live players next update.
@Tiferet:
99 and under 50% on one or more classes = main 99 below 50% and dual somewhere below 95. :P
96 with 100% SP which sucks as I cant collect more for AP?
You can collect as much SP you want. It keeps ticking. The SP bar that say 100% just indicate that you have enough SP to get your first AP. When you get that first SP the bar will probably still show 100% for you to take your second AP and so on.
You need to open the window to see how much SP you really have accumulated to calculate how many AP you can get when you hit lvl 99.
But let's consider, better than yourself to say that besides you there are other "Golden" wings players making DW, and they do not need that, but throughout this Ertheia chronicle time, I have never seen and will never see someone being banned there doing DW.
Now think on the contrary, if these players had the opportunity to come out of Faeron, and could freely exp such main/dual classes to run the risk of being accused bot or then banned (rightly or not)
Sometimes, I suppose that such open-field farm areas are extremely empty at the same point that the vast majority of players already benefit from some third-party software.
There is no fire left. The longer it takes to level, the less fun i have, and the more drops are nerfed so the less stuff i see on the ground, the less fun i have. Nc has basically carved out all the fun from the game.

It's not about the grinding to me... the thing I find disturbing that on my main, all my enchantable skills are a minimum of +5...passives and actives...and the worthwhile ones, I have to +10, and that was a pisser! It's just so annoying to me to move the level to "unlimited". I'd be happier if it were a solid lvl 101 lvl cap, or something like that...that way there's a goal. And to take all the hard work and adena away in my enchanted skills, well..that's just r@pe. Just makes me not feel like doing it anymore. No hate, just lost interest.

As a very casual player I'm burnt out on this game. My work hours are going up for the summer and an hour or two per night given a immediate party ready to go is not going to cut it. And I don't spend my weekends playing anymore.
I guess if the game was actually worth the time I'd keep going, but as the state of game is I think I'm done. I had some amazing fun times, made some life long friends and there won't be any game like it for me. I like to check in and see how things are going, but they seem to be the same old things.
I do agree that this game is not attracting new players. Zero marketing and new player starter areas and quests are pretty saddening. As soon as the game opened up subscription free I knew what was coming and so did a lot of people and quit immediately and haven't returned. My old clan fell apart, the leader and all of it's officers and most members quit and went to another game.

That is a little bit the problem of Korean thinking, they don't realize that the number one reason people don't come, is beacause everybody is talking bad about lineage, all new players hear when they first log in is what ?
Complaints about bots, complaints about how people can't level, complaints about not enough healers or buffers in the game.
They viewed everythin from the perspective of " if the game is free more players will come", but they should have simply fixed the problems, the mouth to mouth publicity of a game is still bigger then anny other, for instance I keep my friends away, not bringing them here, they don't have the patience to deal with the bot misery after a bizzy work day, so as long as bots exist, my friends won't come, most people do this.
If you leave a game because of bots, what will tell your friends, will be like " dude don't play L2 it's totally botted up and it's pay to win now".
That is the truth.
Secondly, when they balanced out classes, they only balanced them out pvp wise.
No lvl 85 -90 healer can solo Bloody swamp at a decent speed, not even in a +8 Twilight Robe set with + 16 apocalypse Mage weapon, still slow as hell.
So yes, if some classes rely to much on party's, and can't solo decently.
U will have a lack of healers and buffers.
The most simple solution would have been to give them a PVE skill that is powerful to solo like any other class, but ... that skill won't work in PVP problem solved.
If they can't think of that, just like Emperor Chin said about conquering Korea, i'll do Korea last, pea brains.

Do you actually know why u feel like that ?
In the past , u were FREE to go where u wanted, now ...
U are BOUND by daily's
There is no REAL choice of hunting grounds anymore ...
In the past u would log on and think, hmm where am I going to level, or am I going to farm some items, or am I going to do that quest or am I trying to get a party ...
All over, no more freedom, they took that away and FORCED us to follow a path THEY layed out...
Wich is nice for a while, but it should have been a choice, there need to be more solo grounds where even a HEALER can solo
and grounds where u can trio and grounds where u need a party to grind.
Dungeons where u need a strong party and most of all they need to give back AOE grounds.
We want our freedom of choice back, that was the thing that made this game FUN, ... FREEDOM.

Uhm, there is a solo healer skill, it's called Superior Inquisitor and it gives healers an extra 60% PvE Damage.
I solo AOE'd bloody swamp on GoD launch with just a +3 Apoc weapon and a +3 heavy set. This was before getting +1.2k p.def from robe passives and before the nuke damage boosts etc. Now it'd be soooo easy to simply pull a train in bloody swamps, AOE it and repeat.
A standard gear healer can AOE Bloody Swamp, Nursery, Fairies, Seal of Shillien, Cemetary, Hellbound,Blazing Swamp etc just as well, if not better than a nuker can. With decent gear I can solo tons of place including Hellfire AOE spot and Dim Warp.
Solo Healer I make 1.4%/hr at 99 with pots. No other toons doing damage or debuffing, just ISS + SE buffs. Most people won't be able to achieve this, but I bet with affordable gear people could do 0.7-1%/hr with pots.
It's not that the class can't make decent XP, it's just a case of knowing how to play, getting the right gear and experimenting.

On a different topic I kind of agree with the xp spot thing. There used to be TONS of places to xp and different ways to XP there, now there's still quite a few XP locations but they're VERY anti-aoe and you're forced to hunt there the way they were designed.
I think the major problem is the balance of gear now. Back in the day a nuker group in FoG could use almost any nukers, a stacked Titan was better than a decent gear Titan, but not by that much and so on.
Now there is so much difference between a stacked toon and a decent gear toon it's untrue.
One party I was in in LoC was struggling, we could only hang on the edge of a pit and killed at a medium pace. We switched our 99/12 AP Soultaker with full +4/+5 R99 gear, and one crit dmg ring for a 99/16 AP Soultaker with a +8 Bloody weapon, decent epics etc and we went from struggligng at the side of a pit to sitting in the middle of the pit clearing it out easily....
I have a +7 Dark Retri, epics, lvl 4 brooch jewels etc, low end of top gear... I had a little play in the colosseum with my friend who has FULL gear (you name it +15 Retri, +8 Dark robes, Insanity, Lindvior, lvl 5 jewels etc), That damage he was doing to me vs the damage I did to him was insane.... I hit him for 600-700 dmg with 50% reflected back, he hit me for 3-8k!
The game is just that imbalanced that any way of getting ok xp for ok toons would make well geared toons xp far far too easily.
Yes, very true about solo acts in game. There aren't much in the options at all. Farming a quest for rewards or just for drops and decent xp. You're stuck with instances and dailies

There is a nice Russian proverb:
"Mice were crying, got injected, but continued to chew cactus."

How much real money did you spend to get all your gear? Thats the problem with this game

100% Agree with you.
I quit smoking so I decided I'd give myself $150 a month to spend on vit and events (Smoking was $300 a month). With all the events etc and my gambling issues it ended up being a LOT more than that as I just blank out and spend.
If I spent my large allowance of $150 a month I would've spent $1200 over 8 months. Gambling spend bumps it up to probably $4k+ over the past 12 months. The guy I was fighting probably spent like $30,000 on all his gear/toon.
The worst thing is the economy is dying, I'm struggling to buy/sell things like I used to, so I'm pretty broke (most of my adena was from playing the market NOT NCStore). Levelling is horrible without vit pots or runes, but I don't want to spend any more money, I want to build up RL savings.
So to put it short I simply can't afford to play. To keep up an enjoyable levelling rate I need to spend $$, but to spend $$ I need to play less and work on making more $$......

First off, grats for quitting smoking! I quit drinking but still smoke. It's on my bucket list. :D Spending $150 a month is modest imo. I've seen people spend THOUSANDS on weapons! I mean you can literally buy a decent car for that amount!
There's a lvl 99 Erthe Sayha Seer that thinks he's tough **** because he's running around with a +15 dark retrib, epics, etc etc. He's been coming out to loc killing me and my party. I have a +9 R95 Blessed Retrib with 2 SA's, (augment is Lvl 3 Clarity), +6 Full Eternal, +5 AQ Soul, +5 Enhanced Istina Ring, +6 Valakas Necklace, Longing, +15 INT Tats, +3 Jewels, Stage 12 Venir. After a few attempts trying to kill him (nearly impossible since all he does is hide not to mention his gear) I gave up and just stand there and laugh! The jokes on him. Pretty sad actually. He'll probably kick himself years from now wondering what the hell he was thinking spend $8k+ on a bunch of pixels when he should've been stashing it away for retirement.
P.S. He has a +17 Dark Bow he's selling for 500 BIL!! LMAO!!

I saw mostly you talks about how much the cost of the gear of the people and whats up in Korea.
I think leveling is not a problem. complete the academy takes like a week I think, without any boosts. since there is available every armor weapon to your weapons below 85 the Adena or drops isn't big role.
Even it far isn't hard as Yidao told, but yes it can be a little boring sometimes.
Yes the idea of Yidao about the level limited contents can be good, but if we look the mentality of US and EU players, a part of failed "top players" would create alt chars to dominate on these low level limited contents.
So with this the problem, that our l2 community is a bit rotten and all about the ego not about the fun for most of the people. But it is right in Korea too since the different poll results showed most of old l2 players in Korea just care about himself.
It could help much more if the NCsoft would extend again the party level range and high level players could level up fast and easy their friends to higher levels as it used to be.
Also there is no point to watch anymore who is what level, since won't be level limit, there is no point to rush to in leveling anymore. Because always be a higher level.
It is mean, there is no point to buy anymore XP runes and Vitality potions.
I guess I just keep to purchase the Prestige Pack and thats all, maybe sometimes buy some extra coins for any event what looks to interesting or useful, but thats all.
To watch which player what type of gear own or how much Dollars invest to get it also useless.
I remember back in past DanielDefo and such people how much money spent on illegal Adena ebay, now atleast a part of this type people spend his money to NCsoft.
After all most of you lazy, greedy and egoist and cry like a little girl. Not just you, its right to the Korean players too and Russian ones too and to all.
The problem is not low level gear and getting 85 as the game is designed for high lvls. You need Real life money to get good gear so you can do something in this game. Also since they nurfed the drops and adena just doing pve and trying to farm is pointless now.
There is no way a new player can start with out spending a lot of money.
How much fun you going to have when you go to a siege with bad gear and getting 1 shot all the time.

There is no way a new player can start with out spending a lot of money.

Yea, but $8000 for a weap!! Gimme a frickin' break! As far as being 1 shot at siege... we all know there are other "mechanics" that out rule even the best of gear.

Nobody pays 8000 dollars for a weapon, unless parts of their brain are missing in which, this whole conversation makes a little more sense. I saw a +16 DARK pvp bow sell for FAR less than 8000 dollars and that was when PVP stones DID not exist to the masses, except to clans that held aden/rune on the dim server (Nova/SH)
If he bought a weapon back then, your story makes a little sense. If hes bought that within the last 1.5 years, then hes a poor fella who got robbed, and is thus trying to recover his losses asking 500 billion for a +17 dark bow. Its worth about 90-100 billlion, and that's stretching it given the novelty factor of being +17.
