Over-enchanting weapons revisited

Was just curious if anyone else has noticed a drop in the success rate in over-enchanting weapons and armor over the last six weeks.

The reason I bring this up is I bought a +4 R99 Retri and during July, when they were selling Lesser Giants and Blue/Red save cards in the store, I got it to +6 with the Lesser and then went straight to +9 using the royal cards. Did I stop there? Hell no! I went for +10 and it failed. Since then I haven't been able to get it anywhere close. And please don't say I'm not lucky. I've gotten 2 Retri's now to +9 and 4 to +6. I have another Lesser Giants and 2 Royal Blue and 2 Royal Red cards but I'm not sure how, if and when to proceed.

In talking with some friends they too have mentioned noticing an increase in the success rate during this time frame. One individual got 2 R99 Retri's to +10! Just wondering if perhaps NC noticed the increase in the success that people were having and dropped the rate so we'd open our wallets even more so.

You're just unlucky, the enchant formula is hard-coded and it needs patch from Korea to change it, which may break many things. Doubt they did that.
Your wallet has been widely opened it seems, from what I read.

I don't buy into that and a few save cards and lesser by no means constitutes my wallet being widely opened.
So, you got lucky a few times, then had a "bad luck streak" and assume enchant rate has been nerfed?
Okay, that is the first time I've ever heard of this. (notice my sarcasm)

You got like 30% chance to enchant a magic weapon from 3>6+
7+ and higher is like ~15%.
Do the math.

How to proceed? stack your LUC as high as possible, buy +5 15 sec LUC potions if they are still available, and those +6 buff items from the alient event, pray for luck.

Well, I guess a helluva lot of people got "lucky" during that time frame and now all these same people are "unlucky". At least on Chronos... smh.
Imagine this scenario.
Lets for a moment pretend you asked 10 friends, they all got lucky a few months ago, and now they had some bad luck.

They ALL succeeded their enchant on their item.
They all had 40% success rate.
That equals into 0.01% chance of happening.
Good for them! They beat the odds!
*INPUT CHEERING*

Next month, they enchant a new item, this item has 60% success rate, wow, even higher! This should work for sure, last month we had even less success rate! Hahahaa!
But, to everyones horror, they ALL fail :(

Whats the chance of that happening?
0.01%.
Notice how it is the same %?

Why is it, according to you, only possible to get lucky while succeeding an enchant, but not getting "lucky" when failing an enchant?

Hope you get my point.

TL;DR There is something in this game, and real life, called luck.
Sometimes you have it, sometimes you do not.

Nice little story but we're talking about NCsoft here and they're only in this to fill their pockets so I have no qualms in thinking that they do mess with the enchant rates.

I really feel that Znipoo is about as close to accurate as it'll get. But I still always have the same suspicions that you have. My luck for instance, is terrible, so I don't even bother with the risky things anymore, while I've seen people do the very things I fail at with great success. I don't get it. If it's a 99% success rate for something, guaranteed I'll be in the 1% fail.
Have you noticed too that now we just so happen to have heavenly scrolls (for 500 hero coins) in the store again. Nice move NC... lower the enchant rate, people fail more, buy more coins to get heavenly scroll. I don't think this is all just a coincidence. I'm not even going to attempt to do anything until that scroll is out of the store at the end of the month.
OE'ing weapons or armour is a gamble and has been since L2 first launched, it has even been the ruin for some hooked on it. :mad:
If someone gave me 100b, I would use all that money for OEing weps. Gotta get that +24.
lol i always thought the max enchant was +20 :eek:
No problem:

Please note:
This screenshot is from September 6, six months into Underground (live in Korea on April 1), and there is still no second SA on that Vesper Thrower. The Mystic Tavern instances, where you get the Soul Crystal for that, are a myth :p

Koreans are mad lol

Max I saw on our servers was in interlude tsu*sls +22 haha
Ever since I got my hands on Kelbim and Tauti weapons, I've had OE withdrawals. I've been enchanting armor just to get my fix. Anyone need +9 and +10 TWLA pieces?
I guess just myself and perhaps a few others are the only ones that don't put it past NC to tamper with the success rates when it suits them.
Tampering with the success rate of enchantments is probably easier said than done. When you look at past events you can see that Juji can raise the base exp of monsters on his own. He can raise the exp bonus that Vitality gives on his own. He can also raise the drop probability for items, mats etc., but he can not raise the drop amount of adena. While once there was an event where the success rate of Maestro crafts was raised (at least in Korea; I don't remember whether we ever got this over here), there was never an event with increased enchantment rates.

So I tend to agree with mixa - changing these rates requires a patch from Korea. While it can be technically done, I doubt that the heavily overworked and horribly understaffed Development Department in Seoul will find the time and inclination to devote resources to such an undertaking just to sell a few NCoins more. The required man-hours would largely outweigh the additional revenue :)
well I just failed a skill oe at +12 4 times, +13 x2, +14 x3. that cost me billions the way chapter 1 codex cost. the chances were all higher than 80%.

and I wont even mention a pair of leggings I tried to oe...they +0 right now after billions spent

and a few years ago I had +14 duals where I failed close to 50 dewr over a few months.

so yea, either u get lucky or you dont.

on the flip side, I have gotten lucky a couple times making a +17 s80 weap, +11 armor's, +15 dark weap....but to be honest I failed more than I succeeded even tho the stats say I should succeed more than I fail on certain OE's.

Hi Yidao,
does it mean you can apply a second and third SA on S80 Weapon too?
Hi Yidao,

When Underground goes live, you will be able to apply a second SA to weapons from C-Grade to S80 and a 3rd SA to weapons of R-Grade and above.

About halfway into the next update a 3rd SA slot for lower Grade weapons and a 4th SA slot for R+ weapons was theoretically introduced. This was heavily bugged though and right now they are still at 2 resp. 3 SAs in Korea, with a fix being announced for later. The discussion about this epic failure starts here and continues on the following pages as new bugs turned up:

I hate you NCsoft!!!!!!!!!!! I am done with this! **** random bull crap! Why the hell did I chose to be a frigging mage!!!!!!!
lol
How many DEWR u waste on R95 weapon Sharlanna ?
when NC just introduced DEWR and there were almost no R99 weapons ingame at all I spent 31 DEWR to make a +15 weapon (cutter) ^^" and I know of 1 guy who spent more then 100 to make a +15 Retributer back then - mind you this is before LUC was ingame..

Only 3 and that was 6 to 8 months ago. Thank god I still have that as a backup. This kinda stuff drives me crazy. Unfortunately I'm not the kind of person to just forget about it and walk away. And LUC?... hahahaha... I'm now doing this on a dorfie of mine that has +17 LUC. Thought the added LUC would help... smh. The thing is, my R99 has 2SA's and is blessed so I have too much invested in it to sell and just buy one. Oh, and get this... I blessed it AFTER failing getting Bloody WITH elcyum!! I'm doomed and cursed. Makes me wish I would've taken C++ back in the day instead of Cobol so I could better understand the mechanics behind this. I don't know wtf is going on but the success rate feels like it's more like 2% and I'm not the only one that's *****ing about it.

That is sick!! Can't buy those suckers for under 5bil now.

I feel your pain Sharlanna...As a matter of a fact, I've tried pretty much the same thing. I saw +6 Blessed R95 retri for 2.5Bil on AH, so cheap! I thought and bought it; then I used my stash of Lesser Giant stones in my private warehouse, and got +0! LOL! Used 2 x EWR then Giant scroll to get it to +4...used Lesser Giant again then got +0 again! OMG! I repeated the process and got +4 ---> +6 with lesser Giant finally! Well, my goal was +10 at least so I used lesser Giant again...the result? +0...LOL

Oh yeah~~~The success Rate is so Low for Mage weapons...
Dang... what a waste! To be honest, I don't think I wanna invest too much for R or R95 weapons any more...Think about it, They are just level up gears and can't go bloody or dark.

You have no idea how many people I've spoken to recently who are having this exact same problem, especially with mage weapons. This is really getting old FAST! I don't mind failing/reset occasionally, or even one bad luck streak, but continually??.. something ain't right and I'm still kicking myself for going for +10 on that R99!! NEVER again. Got too much invested in it now with it being blessed with 2 SA's so no other choice than to keep going for it. Even have +17 Luc on my dorfie now. You'd think that'd make a difference.. HELL NO! *going to beat my head against the wall... AGAIN*!!

You have my sincere condolences Sharlanna. It's a tough time to be a mage...sigh... I am thinking about using a different approach for mage weapons now.
i.e. Get 10 x regular R99 retri and use EWRs+ Giant Scrolls to make them +4 or +5 then use Giant scrolls + Lucky Giant stones (+20% success).
I think I should get at least 1 x +12 R99 Retri with this method, then make that +12 retri blessed then make it either Bloody or dark.

I think this is the best approach hopefully...
I wonder how people make +15 or +17 R99 now...
How do they do it?
Just so you know, LUC doesnt really increase your enchant rate, it just gives you a higher chance to trigger LUC, aka "100% safe enchant".
If 35 LUC is 1% chance, adding +17 to that would probably make it 1.5-2% chance total.
Just random numbers but gives you an idea..

That is very optimistic.
If you enchant 10x from 2+, you should receive about 2x 5+, 2x 4+ and 6x 3+.

Then you have around ~33% success rate with lesser giant stones, meaning ~3 out of those 10 weapons would remain, highest enchant being 9+.

Enchanting that potentially 9+ retri would give you around 20% success rate with lesser giant stone.

Sooo yeah, better increase the number from 10x to 100x if you want a realistic chance for high OE magic weapon :o

Are you referring to Lesser Giant Lucky Stones here? If so, they aren't +20% unless I'm missing something here. Can get pretty costly doing this, but what else is new. 10 R99 retri's would run about 10bil. Then you have the EWR's, Giant scrolls and Lesser's. And I've yet to use a Giant at +2 and get anything other then +3 out of it, but then again I was just doing one weap.

How exactly would you approach OEing these 10 weaps? All at once? Like day 1, have them all +2 and use Giant's on all of them. Day 2, another round for each weap, depending on how that first outcome was. It's late and this probably isn't making sense but now you and Znipoo have me thinking.. god help me! LOL
I'm so confused. This is not new information, mage weapons have, notoriously been very difficult to enchant in L2 - hence why you used to enchant dark screamers to get OE'd **** swords.

Its also why you enchant soul separators/soul bows to get OE'd SoM

You have just been ridiculously lucky.

Here are the actual enchant rates per GM testing (via <secret dirty name for EU server>): https://*****forum.com/threads/9033/

Tests were done with straight weapon scrolls, no blessed, no stones, nothing:

in that test i attempted to enchant 1000 [IMG] amaranthine throwers [focus], which cost me 5003 [IMG] scrolls: enchant weapon (r-grade) (out of them 3000 were used for safe enchantment to +3). in the end i got 525 [IMG] amaranthine throwers [focus] enchanted to +4, 266 to +5, 145 to +6, 46 to +7, 15 to +8, 4 to +9 and only 2 to +10.

for my comparative test i chose magic type weapons - 1000 [IMG] blessed amaranthine retributers. their enchantment required 4324 [IMG] scrolls: enchant weapon (r-grade) (out of them 3000 were used for safe enchantment to +3). all in all i successfully enchanted 244 items to +4, 60 to +5, 18 to +6, and only 2 to +7. here is a diagram representing the data:

But don't think that taking something with a 25% enchant rate and slapping a +30% increased chance on it gives you a 55% chance to succeed. The +30% is 30% of 25% so you have

25 * .3 = 7.5

25+7.5= 32.5% chance (using +30% enchant chance scrolls/stones/etc)

Magic Weapons:
3->4: 25%
4->5: 25%
5->6: 30%
6->7: 11%

Physical Weapons:
3->4: 50%
4->5: 50%
5->6: 50%
6->7: 30%
7->8: 30%
8->9: 25%
9->10: 50%*

* Denotes that this number is not an actual representation, due to the fact that by this point, there were only 4 weapons left, and 2 of them made it to +10, not a large enough sample to determine.
How exactly would you approach OEing these 10 weaps? All at once? Like day 1, have them all +2 and use Giant's on all of them. Day 2, another round for each weap, depending on how that first outcome was.

I think I could just recollect my own experience with L2 random to give you some food for thought.

When there were jewelry recipes with 70% success rate, I failed 10 Moirai jewelry crafting attempts in a row. You can calculate the odds of that.
(Note I attempted to craft once or twice per day, not all at once.)

When I put attribute stones on weapons (~60% success rate) it usually looked like this: fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail success success success success fail success success success success success success. So, when I tried it with just a few stones, I ended up with nothing.

Once I raised 2 billion of adena, bought 10 Topaz boxes and tried to compound them. I knew the success rate for the Brooch jewels was ~50% at early stages and ~5% at stage 5. Guess what, I got 6 fails in a row! I was hoping to finally get a winning streak after that, but nope I ended up with a Topaz lvl 2.

And I still remember the event that took place in one of the early chronicles during which we had to gamble with a npc to increase the status. It was a simple game of heads&tails so I figured I'd just pick heads all the time to win at least at every other try. So, the event npc just kept telling me: tails! tails! tails! tails! tails! - many times in a row, at every stage. I did get the top status in the end (the Wolf's badge) but it cost me an abnormal number of the quest items: times more than expected, presuming the 50% success rate.

To me, it looks quite obvious now: never gamble with NCsoft (unless it's absolutely necessary, like in the case of Topaz jewels). The Korean RNG will always defeat you.

If you need an overenchanted weapon so badly, just buy it from someone. What do you need it for, anyways?
I don't trust anything over +6 anymore. I had better luck back in the day when there were no blessed scrolls or lucky stones. Even enchanting skills, can't tell you how many failed with 98% success rate,it's almost impossible, yet I'll bet I've seen it a dozen times.
But don't think that taking something with a 25% enchant rate and slapping a +30% increased chance on it gives you a 55% chance to succeed. The +30% is 30% of 25% so you have

25 * .3 = 7.5

In the case of Lucky Stones I actually think you are wrong. I am almost certain that they DO add a flat % increase to enchant success rate.

While I have never enchanted a mage weapon, I regularly enchant fighter weapons and armor. I have made multiple +8 / +9 Immo/TW Armor Sets, always using High Grade Enchant Stones (not blessed stones). Same holds true for numerous fighter weapons. I have made lots of +8 Req/Apoc weapons.

In respect to weapons, we already know that the success rate uses a different formula depending on weapon type (mage vs. fighter) and, high grade lucky stones give less increase than armor stones (20%). It stands to reason that even using lucky stones it is still going to be hard to get a mage weapon to a high enchant.

Additionally, I DO think your interpretation of enchant success bonus DOES apply to a Maphr Shirt (% increase of base chance). I have a +7 shirt and I have done multiple test on S grade gear. I have seen virtually no difference between Maphr and no Mapr. I literally think you would need a sample size of 1000+ to start to see a difference using a shirt.
If you need an overenchanted weapon so badly, just buy it from someone. What do you need it for, anyways?

I have too much invested in it now to buy one. I'm also stubborn. Why do I need one? lol... to do as much damage as possible maybe?
Man, sprocket, you sound like one of the lucky ones. I too believe the +30% is added to the base making it 30% of the 25%, not actually 30 +25, but that could just be from my bad luck. Too many fails using +30% failures ging for simply +4. And mage weapons have always been harder, hands down.
Guess I was one of the lucky ones. R99 retributer (Clean)

+2, (giant scroll) +3, (giant scroll & lesser stone) +6, (giant scroll & lesser stone) +10.

Reading this thread made me stop.
Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut

I did fail over 10 in a row on trying above +3 on r99 armor with Giant Scroll and Lesser stones. >.>

that was beyond ****** right there.

+1 Very smart! Wish someone would've told me to stop at +9 but that's water under the bridge. Thing is still at +3. I'm chicken to move forward atm. :D
Finally got this stubborn R99 retri back to +4 after a few resets.

Recap: my dorfie has 52 LUC. Inventory consists of 6 ewr's, 5 bewr's, 1 blessed high-grade lucky stone, 2 giant scrolls and 2 lesser giant stones, 2 royal blue cards, 2 royal red cards, and 5 Maphr's luck pots. Not sure which way to go here. I'm thinking go with lesser giant's. If it succeeds then go with the royals. If it resets... I'm gonna throw something!! I'm all ears for suggestions. :D
I would try to go 6+ or higher with normal stuff and the card.
Then use lesser giant stones + luc potions.
Every card I've used failed, think they are broken.
Every card I've used failed, think they are broken.

This retri was +4 when I bought it, used a lesser giant and got +6. Then used a royal blue and 2 royal reds and got it to +9.
+5 now with a Blessed High Grade Lucky stone. I'll wait a few days then go again. Last time I got it to +5 I used a lesser and it reset but my dorfie didn't have +17 LUC and didn't have any Maphr's Luck pots either. Haven't decided which way to go yet. This is nerve wracking! Once it's +9 that's it!!
Addiction, that's what there's to it :)
Wish ya good luck making it +9
My R99 Retri is now +9!!!!!! Weeeeeeeeee. Used a Lesser Giant's. Have a DEWR so I'm going for +10 and stopping there!!
Once it's +9 that's it!!

Not that I want you to fail the +10 attempt, but if you do, you should've listened to yourself.

............addictions..........

I got the DEWR really cheap so why not. If it fails it'll still be +9. Oh, and I know all about addictions. I quit drinking and smoking, so yea. :D

Congratz.

I almost always have success with the Blessed High Grade Lucky stones. The other stones, including Lesser Giant, meh, not so much. More often than not I enchant without using any stones. Now THAT takes stones! :)
