This forum is flooded with ban threads. Bot this. Legit that. Ban this. 3 day ban. 5 day ban. Wrongly banned. I'm innocent. Prove it. Law suit. I mean holy hell. There's literally nothing else to read but crap about bans. I think I'll quit visiting this pathetic forum that caters to spammers and babies. We could use some new words put into the filter: #bot #legit #ban

I'd rather read about Dreamseeker spending his mortgage in the ncstore, or telling us how gamechanging he is.
Its because the ban hammer always works as well as NCSoft works. We all know the ones that script, and we see a bazillion programmed toons running in certain areas. So why doesn't the ban hammer target those first and clear the lvl'ing areas. After that most scripted players turn off the scripts. When they see that NCSoft actually has something that works they hide until they think they can beat the game again.
The problem arises when NCSofts "script detector" targets any that it thinks are "scripted players". Has happen before, will happen again. I've played for 12 years now and I've never tried to "automate" the game. I paid to play so I play. I don't watch my screen play itself, what kinda sense does that make to someone that actually likes the game? Since the arrival of the NCStore I have paid even more to play as have others.
So, the threads that you see can be filled with legit peeps that have been wronged. I don't kick them down unless I know what they've done or what they've been doing. In a perfect world 100% of those banned deserved it. This is not a perfect world.

It's also trivial to detect a noob who thinks he knows everything but knows nothing.
Yes, it's trivial to detect a client side .dll but not so trivial if the client has been hacked and tries to hide it. You must realize that the user's computer is not under your (game developer's) control but under full control of the user/cheater.
If the anti-cheat mechanism requires client's cooperation in ANY way, then it can and will be broken.
1. The dll doesn't even need to be in the L2 folder, it can be injected from elsewhere.
2. The dll can behave like a rootkit, i.e. hiding itself by hacking modules/functions used to get essential information (like list of modules of your process).
The hacked client appears to the server as any other regular game client but provides automation for the cheater.
There may be some hidden detection functions in the client, still unhandled by the cheat dll, but sooner or later (after a few bans and packet inspections & deeper code inspection) these will be found and patched. This is also a reason why bans come in waves and not too often. I don't believe ncsoft when they say every week that they banned <insert random integer number here> accounts. If they do, they are shooting themselves into the feet. Sad but true.
As I already said in another post, it's a constant war between game devs and cheat devs. If one side lacks active development, then the other side prevails.
A big part of the anti-cheat protection could be server-side only, based non non-human behaviour. That way they could at least degrade the bots from chucknorris level to progamer level, which already helps a lot.

I am fairly certain that my two accounts have been banned....
Now this is not cool because I have never used 3rd party software...EVER!
My highest level char is 91, has been at lvl 90 for the past year and the most gold I own is right around 136 mill. My accounts have been open since 2007 and they are going to ban ME? I play for fun but still, losing all the items and the chars I have put all that time into is beyond messed up. I cannot log in into either account but when I went to try and make a new one, I had no issues. I received no emails or anything saying my account was suspected of being botty. This blows, guys. Like big time. I am all for banning the bots who ruin the game for legit players, believe me. I have raised hell about it many times. But when legit players who clearly do not use botting (I think my account and lvl speaks for itself) are booted out, something has got to give.
1st wave = 3 days
2nd wave = 5 days
3rd wave = perma ?

I see 2 possible increments for future Suspensions(unless next is Perma-Ban)...
Next Ban add 2 more days... 3,5,7,9,11 etc.
