Last night he was killing afk ppl in CoC, prolly he is trying to learn how to play this new class - feoh.
Like u said its such a waste of gear, i bet he was shocked when he got killed by an afk dorf :D
But it's seem he playing all day long how he could possibly not knowing how to use his gears?
