i dont complain easely lol... but this lag does get a bit annoying and i;ve upgraded my pc a few times now... its not getting any better from it.. think i got about 20gb ram on ma desk which is completly unneeded and a new vidcard lol :) keep aving to set ma videosettings back to lower cuz of lag.. nd then it even dun helps ._.
There was not much lag the last week or so, but today it is unplayable. Several 5-10 second lags every minute. Getting frozen screen and being killed by mobs which were not even SPAWNED yet before the screen froze. After 1h of lag and deaths we called it a night early today, the game is unplayable like that, and we had players from several different countries in the party who were experiencing lag.

Ya its horrible I keep mis targeting because of it can't miss target as a summoner in silent valley that's like instant death o.o
Devianne & Phoenix = lag
All other servers = no lag
hmm.. ur wrong there...
@Lyzira
my location: netherlands
server: luna

shud be fine imho.. its not :) its not constant like i got 1 hour without atm.. but been quite bad last few days... when i wake up i pray for no lag.. thats how the situation is

I'm on Phoenix, but not playing anymore. Don't want to end up hitting a mob for 1 second, and when the lag spike stops, seeing my toon dead on the floor. I'm playing from California, so lag shouldn't even be too bad. It started after the Yogi Event. After that, its had its ups and downs. Guess today is one of the the downs. :(
It's odd for me. I hear ppl on hero voice shouting about lag all the time, and my clannies are also complaining about lag. I had bad lag about 2 weeks ago.
Today though, I'm 3 boxing in Antharas Lair, and have 2 craft dwarves online in Giran of all places. And I experienced no lag at all. Thats 5 chars in game on 3 comps.
I really dont understand this lag. But I hope I dont get it back.
I am in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Sporatic spikes. Will spike for a bit then stop then spike then big frame loss then spike then stop. Maybe for 1/2 hour then restart.
I reminds me of Diablo when i was a necromancer running about 6 revives. Nothing like the skellys and full revives when i would move frame freeze frame freeze....God i loved that game ...sigh.
Just got done with a party on aria, we had people all over, Seattle, Florida, Toronto amongst others, and all of us had lag pretty much solid for the last 3 hours or so, only one person lagged so bad that they DC'd however.
Phoenix server.
The lag has been extremely bad lately.
Note: there was almost no lag during the recent "disappearing NPC event", but once it got fixed, the lag was back, and getting worse by the day (lag spikes every minute or so).
I have tracerouted the servers many time, everything looked fine before the end (NCsoft's) part of the route (which I can't ping for some reason).
One greek player (having the same issue) sent his PingPlotter diagram to me, it also looked good (no packet loss or ping jumps anywhere).
Note that I'm playing from Russia and connecting to NCsoft's network via Telia, while that player from Greece got a different route (through Alter.net).
However, both routes looked ok.
Therefore, the problem must be somewhere at NCsoft's network that is unreachable for tracerouting (hidden behind a firewall or something).
Lyzira, can you please tell how much time should it take before your so-called "support team" starts looking into it at their own end?
Is it so necessary to create a "flash mob" (of multiple players petitioning about the same issue) to make them do their job?
I, personally, don't need their speculations regarding my connection (when I'm having a problem near my end, I am able to detect and sometimes fix it on my own).
99% of players won't bother to submit tickets either (for various reasons).
Another question: when I log in Giran, why does it take a minute or two before every private shop is displayed on my screen? I know it can't be *my* connection speed issue (because L2 normally takes only a few KB's), and my video card is good enough to process all the polygons and textures quickly. My guess is: it happens either due to insufficient bandwidth reserved by the server for my connection (the server won't send me 1 MB of data, or whatever amount is necessary, within 1 second), or due to the server being selective for some reason and not processing my requests in time. The latter explains why some players are getting a lag spike (all at the same time) while some others are not.

That is actually a change which they put into the game a few expansions ago - you do not see all the shops immediately, they get loaded one after the other (before that, many people apparently were "frozen" as soon as they ported into Giran because their PC got overwhelmed by having to load all the shops at once). For people with a good connection, this is a bit annoying, but still works fine (you can /target shops or NPC which you know are there even before they are shown on screen). Since a few days though, I actually DO get frozen when I port into Giran, i.e. my client accepts no input at all for around ten seconds or so - I can click on the ground somewhere to move there, I get the blue marker thingy shown on the ground where I click, but my char does not move until ten seconds later (and then "beams" there, so the action was sent to the server, but my client gets no response back from the server until a few seconds later). Weird.
Bartz Teon Franz all other servers are just fine for me but Phoenix the only one that matters I can hardly move the spikes are so bad. From Central USA. Also it is at least 2x as bad as yesterday and yesterday was 2x worse then the day before.
man this lag is bs this is the second day of this crazy lag, and yes i know some of you are not lagging so don't bother telling me, but nc soft plz plz do something.
It's normal that the last two hops do not respond to ping requests, they are configured that way (for me it is tge6-2.fr3.iad.llnw.net). Just send the result file to them via the support ticket so they can see where people come from who have lag.
Good job with the petitions folks, based on the information collected so far we've taken a few steps to work towards alleviating the problem that Phoenix players have been seeing for the past 24 hours or so.
Please let us know if have noticed any changes (good, bad, or no change) as you play this afternoon.
When people write in with an issue and we discover that video drivers are out of date or there is some other reason that their system isn't running optimally, it is standard for us to correct those issues first. Sometimes these problems don't have anything to do with the problem at hand, and sometimes they do. Even if the issue is unrelated, it is still an issue that should be corrected to optimize gameplay.
So has your network guys checked for problems with the nic's/gateways/routers/hubs/switches ect and checked if there's alot of network collisions going on? If you need a outside consultation I can setup a VPN and check your network status to help pinpoint the problems. I can already tell you the problem is between the point where you split the network traffic to the specific server IP's and the servers mainframe or virtual host. Just a bit of free advice from someone who knows about computers and networks.
Also you many wanna check exactly what was done during http://boards.lineage2.com/showthread.php?t=204026 that maint. since it seems most the lag problems started around that time and gotten steadily worse.
I logged in tonight to check the server status. The Ping dropped back to 44 and there is no lag spikes now, but I got constantly D/C every few minutes when I was out grinding. Very strange. Maybe the Oly is going on, I will check it later.
Phx lag is still unplayable. Ive updated everything I can on my pc and still attack swing twice lag 10 seconds....unlock rinse repeat. We should all get a free month for how pathetic this snafu is.

Thank you
plz check deviane....the situation is bad..lag spikes all the time, its very hard to play.
I play from greece,my friend bd plays from u.s.a,and 2 other party members from
central europe and we all have 3-5 sec lag spikes.
We will send petitions when we will log in later...
Sorry guys, Aion beta... please wait until the weekend is over.
lol, if it really IS because of the Aion beta (and it is not all that unlikely, since it seems to be some network congestion near the servers and the problems DID start for me ca. 1 day before this beta event began, so maybe people were downloading like crazy), then I do not want to know what the situation will be like when Aion goes LIVE...
Wellll the servers been up and down since the beta opened. Everytime patches release and I get an email i start lagging like hell in L2. As successful as Aion has been in the West, L2s current state takes a serious back burner in comparison to Aion launching. They wont tell you that though.. :P
Beginning at 2am CDT (8am GMT) on Tuesday July 28th we will be performing a bit of network maintenance that may temporarily affect your connection to the Devianne and Phoenix servers. Maintenance is expected to last for one hour.
All servers will remain up throughout this maintenance and other servers will not be affected.
Could this have anything to do with the lag that half the people on Pheonix are now having?
I realise there are other things in life than lineage 2, but i pay for this game and therefore expect to be able to use it. I have had this lag since the update and haven't said anything on this forum because, stupidly, I expected NC to sort it out. Instead of telling people in the beginning it was their network you could have looked into it a bit more and possibly sorted out the problem by now. I have no idea how many paying customers you have, but I'm pretty sure it's more than enough to have a decent technical team and not just a bloke with a spanner!
I also have terrible lag spikes, only thing I can do nowadays is set up store on my laptop and that's it :p rest of the time I play L4D no lag there, TF2 no lag either, Guild Wars and no lag there too.
I connect from Costa Rica (Central America) and i play on Phoenix.
I personally have been having lag spikes which are pretty nasty.
I live in NJ, East Coast and play on Pheonix
Other players in my clan have been experiencing terrible lag even up until early this morning.
Some of those ppl play in England, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, California, and arizona to name a few of the states.
Some of our ppl ended up going to play some on Teon because the lag was not bad their and the lag on Pheonix was unplayable.
And it definatly appears to be packet loss, many of them recently bought new pc's with updated graphics cards and drivers, and are not having lag playing other online games.
Soo its Monday now. Im suprised Lyzira has not responded here to hold back our frustrations some more. On top of that, nobody from NCSoft has still admit blame for the lag. They owe their customers some kinda of money back, but you can bet your you wont ever see a dime returned. No appologies, no explanations.. lol. Its amazing what people get payed for as a job these days..
This has been going on for way too long which means you are either incapable or unwilling to sort this out. If it's incapable call in someone who can and if its unwilling tell us so we can give someone else who is willing our hard earned money to play their game.
I am fed up with this and feel its unfair to expect people to sit back and accept it. I said earlier that I'm sure you must have enough to pay a decent technical team and after seeing your profits for the first quater (most of which was said to come from lineage and lineage 2 sales) I now know that you definately do!
So please dont tell us that you are working on it, because I would say at this point you aren't working on it enough.
So can we have a realistic time scale as to when you really will put some time into sorting this please?
I just wanted to let you guys know that we are still working on figuring out the issue. I know this isn't the answer that you wanted to hear, but I'm afraid that a quick fix hasn't been discovered. We have players from all over using all kinds of different connection paths experiencing lag on these two servers. Not everyone is experiencing lag either so the investigation is still going on.
When you do submit a ticket and our tech support folks follow up with you asking for more information, please respond with the information requested!
To those of you who are connecting from the states and experiencing these lag spikes on Phoenix or Devianne, can you post your ISP here? Most of the reports we have been receiving from the states appear to be coming from Comcast users more than any other ISP by a significant amount.
We have not been able to determine the cause of the lag that our customers from out of the US have been experiencing but we are continuing to investigate those problems as well.
I'm on Devianne experiencing these lag spikes, it has been unplayable for me for the past 4 days. I have Comcast as my ISP but how do you know that a majority of your players as a whole may be using Comcast in the first place? This may be the reason for your skewed responses towards Comcast.
Any ETA on this fix? My subscription auto-renews within 6 days but if it's not fixed I'm canceling.
I am from Greece (obviously I have a Greek ISP) I play on Devianne and I have big lag problems for the past days. But not only me. All my clanmates from various parts of the world are on the same situation. Game has become unplayble, ie. not fun any more. Honestly, log with a low level toon on a Devianne siege or TW and tell me how fun is that.
I am affraid that tech support tries to find individaul solutions on a widespread problem. The problem seems to be pretty straightforward: 100% packet losses near NC servers. Why is it so complicated to check it? Your support asks from players to use the tool to test connection. If someone simply gather a few of these reports, I am sure he would have a clear picture of the problem (if not the solution).
Finally, yy complain is that NC never apologizes for problems like that. They pretend they never existed. This drives me crazy.
Not sure if this was already posted but.. from what I can see, both Aion and Lineage 1 are having the lag issues too. I don't play either of thise games nor do I have any lag issues, but I thought I'd throw that out there anyways.
Grats on the server restart last 4-5 days things seemed fixed for me you restart the server and now there all jacked up again lag spikes once a min. Comcast ISP. Me thinks you need to hire some smarter techs to work there cause if they cant solve this type a problem in over a week there not to good at there job.
Time Warner cable ,North Carolina , major lag for the past 8days or so
Same here - Time Warner Cable, North Carolina .... my regular average ping used to be around 28. Now I am lucky if I get 58... average is 111 ping.
I've never seen that before 'til last update.

So I'm afraid that isn't the problem that we are seeing. If we were seeing a 100% packet losses close to our servers, then all of our players connecting to these servers would be having the problem which they are not.
Please follow up with our support team when they respond to your tickets folks.
Do you know why players wont help you guys out with stuff like this because you are determined not to say "hey sorry guys this was our fault".
You have asked us to run programmes (which me and many others I know have done). I then get from you, what I consider to be, an insulting email asking me to run another programme to determine if "my" internet is lagging. You have also asked another friend in a completely different country to clean out his computer after running 3 programmes for you. I cant believe that you would yet again insult our intelligence by trying to insinuate that it is the players internet or computers fault. Why wont you just stop this and get on with what you guys are payed to do and that is run a game for us to play. At the moment i am paying for jack because me and hundreds of others cant play it. Surely even you can see that its more than just a coincidence that everyone started lagging the same way, at the same time and only on these two servers.
Please if you want our help dont then insult us by sending back some half wit email trying to get off the hook. I am not asking for compensation or anything like that, I am simply asking for what I pay for, a game to play and a decent service, which at the moment I am far from getting!
I think you may be misunderstanding our tech support replies if you feel that we are trying to get "off the hook" for a lag issue.
The first program that we ask players to run confirms that the computer is optimally set up for playing the game. *Many* players that write in with outdated drivers, unsupported system set ups, and other various problems that contribute to many issues. After this has been resolved, we generally run a trace route to determine exactly where the connection is having trouble between your computer and our server. Without this information, we cannot diagnose the issue nor can we hope to resolve it.
Its the new mystery event the mystery is if can you xp during this crap. Seriously though this is getting stupid to many people from to many states and country's are having problems for it to be something that far from NCSoft HQ or there ISP. I think the IT department needs to take some refresher classes on how troubleshoot problems and give some respect that most customers that actually receive and run there programs prob know a little something about computers. Seriously if you think the problem is on my end i wouldn't have 45 ping to every other server and have 4k ping to phoenix. Admit you have a problem and find a fix before you lose your playerbase.
*Many* players that write in with outdated drivers, unsupported system set ups, and other various problems that contribute to many issues.
Really? Because I dont think this has ANYTHING to do with the problem at hand. So stop telling us about a lot of players. On top of that, start appologizing to people. Tell us you're sorry the servers have been unplayable for so many for over a week. That's about 3-4$ you owe a large share of your customers for service you can't provide. What exactly do you do aside from direct us to ingame automated tickets that thus far, haven't accomplished anything, as the problem is not small and minute, but rather widespread and definately on your end. What are you being paid to do exactly that is helping us out in anyway? Would everyone be better off not wasting their time posting here? Please answer some questions!!

I understand the trace route but having the newest drivers isnt always a good thing. A one year old driver may work better for someone then a driver released today. Unless there was a game update or you changed something about your system the likelihood of a someone going from a smooth running game to a unplayable mess cause of a old drive is very unlikely especially on a wide of scale as this. Not trying to bash anyone but its very frustrating as a paying player to do what seems to be someone else's job that your monthly fees are suppose to be paying for then not to be able to play adds insult to injury.
i've been running alot of tests for my support ticket so I can only hope i'm helping out what is wrong they did tell me to do the defragging and update drivers which i complied with since it wasn't a difficult task to perform. It did not fix my problem however I seem to be at a point where they have narrowed it down to the "issue" at hand so from now on hopefully all information i'm provided is helping figure what the root of the problem is.
wow defrag? that's really kinda just sad they even asked that all it does is puts entire files near each other on the physical disc and puts the most used files near the edge. But even if you had the worst fragmented drive ever that wouldn't cause near whats happening. Seems like there pulling at straws with that.
As someone who has been working on computers and networks since it was dos some of the things being asked of people makes me laugh or cry not sure which. But makes me doubt we will see a fix anytime soon so I guess cry. Considering I just got disconnected from lineage while typing this make me think i'm right considering vent and streaming music was unaffected hard to think its my isp =/.
I am still doing what they ask, but feel now it is just for the sake of looking like they are actually doing anything.
I dont think you realise quite how frustrating this is for not only us, but others ingame too, that cant do the things they want to either because half of their clan cant move!
We appreciate that this wasn't going to be a 10 minute job but you also have to appreciate that when someone is told to clean out their computer to try to run the game without lag, people may start to get a tad annoyed.
If you had bought something (which we all have in advance) and were treated like this I doubt that your reaction would be any different.
I now get very bad lag when i run 3 clients on my computer to the point where everything just freezes. If i minimize two then the third still spikes but is more or less playable as long as i fight non aggro/non social mobs.
The thing that NC should consider is that the game was running fine with the system i/we had no matter how screwed up NC may think it is. Also this is not an isolated case but many are having the same lag problems. I doubt that everyone's disk needs defragging all at the same time or everyone's drivers are outdated.
I know it isn't easy to fix stuff like this but you may want to apply the limited resources to checking your end. I believe this started after the last event update.
today for the first time I am getting real bad lag problems on sahya server plz fix this problem
if any admin or whoever is over this problem needs any info ask
So logged in to help with something at 5.50, logged out again with an apology at 6.10. It was worse today than it has been, not sure what you guys are doing but i suspect drinking coffee and laughing at all us stupid people that pay your wages!
Unfortunately I renewed my account only a week or so ago, otherwise I would atleast be able to have the satisfaction of knowing you werent getting my money while I cant log in.
Can you please atleast tell us what has been done by your technical team so far to try to resolve this, because as far as I know the servers havent been bought down, so definately not a maintenance.
Do you know why players wont help you guys out with stuff like this because you are determined not to say "hey sorry guys this was our fault".

Can we ban this guy??... for real.
I do work as a tech support engineer for a company and you have no idea the types of calls we get. Like Moxie suggested, they are several factors in the computer client end that contribute to major network issues. Drivers one of them. Spyware.... have you ever checked netstat and saw how many connections opens you have??? I mean, if you read my other posts, I am one of the ones that I am getting hit hard because lags in-game. However, there are couple of steps we ALL need to go thru for proper diagnostic of the problem. Your post is just an insult and disrespect to all the readers. However, the lag started mostly since the last update I am not going to argue that and on top of that... not all getting the lag at the same time.
My brother also works for a very large online teaching company and they are not allowed to leave site if the servers or network go wrong for any reason until it is sorted. As for banning me, for what reason?
I have asked what is being done for what i am paying for, if you bought something and it didnt work, ie a car, and you knew there was a fault with the engine and were being told its the way you drive it, would you be happy with that?
So you have your opinions and I have mine, If you are happy to sit back and let them take your money for not playing then good for you. I am, as a consumer, allowed to ask what is being done by them for a service I pay for.
As insulting and disrespecting other "readers" in that post show me where.
I said I was running their programmes so before ragging on me try to read what I said. As for individual problems I know what kind of things happen with computers and networks, but this is definately not an individual problem. So dont take your frustration out on me.
Hey i pay for 5 accounts so i should be really mad but if its a code problem its gonna take some time to check it. While they do that i guess they want you to check your end.
I'm very critical of NC when it comes to bots and/or cheaters...ask anyone...but this stuff can takes time.
While we are still continuing to gather info, a great many tickets are pointing to packet loss that is occurring within Comcast's network. If you are a Comcast customer and experiencing lag on Phoenix or Devianne, be sure to follow through with our tech support department so that they can confirm that this is the issue your connection is having and give you the information you will need to take to your ISP.
If you are not a Comcast customer and are still having lag issues, we are still working on pinpointing the trouble and we are still gathering information from players who have written in. We need you folks to follow through with the requests from our support team, I cannot stress this enough.
Phoenix is going to hell! it would be very funny if NCsoft would say ... Guys we have some bad news, we are not supporting Lineage 2 anymore, its to much work! either you stop crying or go play Aion.. our new baby:).. Gad dang!
I think Ncsoft should call up the company thats lagging us..and say: Hey
our customers are lagging as hell! must Lyzira come up there and choke a..... cous we cant call em.. the guy would laugh and say: is this a joke? are you realy calling me cous your game is lagging you are just one individual person...and then he would flick his finger lol

How could you expect NCsoft to treat customers well in AION with this attitude in L2?
Phoenix is not going to hell. It's as lag free as ever for me, not even a hint of a problem. If it were actually a server problem, everyone would have having it.
You should be pointing the finger at your ISP and your ISP's peering and transit arrangements. Somewhere between you and Phoenix, there's a router that's dropping packets. NC can't do anything about that. Your ISP might be able to though. Do a tracert on the problem, find the malfunctioning router, and email those details to your ISPs tech support. Chances are it's out of their network but they will at least know the correct contacts to pass the info to.
Oh and PS, the Aion servers (the beta ones at least) are hosted in the same physical location as Phoenix (somewhere near DC/Virginia) so switching games wouldn't really help you. There's been plenty of people complaining on the Aion beta forums about the same issue.

Are you ******ed or what???
I did traceroute a good number of server IP's, there was NO packet loss anywhere.
A friend from Greece sent me his PingPlotter diagrams, guess what, he was connecting to Phoenix through completely different ISP's (local and global) and there was no packet loss anywhere either.
A clannie from New Zealand can't play at all, guess we all are using the same router huh??
The only thing we have in common is the LAST MILE at NCsoft's end, and it CANNOT be tracerouted.
Understand?
And whatever is the cause of the problem, it's obviously acting very selectively, i.e. some players have lag while some others don't. However, the server-wide lag spikes that simultaneously affect multiple players from different parts of the world are THE fact.
I'd like to hear how NCsoft explain that.
Im playing on Devianne from Netherlands, and this lag started for me already 23 June!
I made a ticket for support and all that i get to hear is that its my pc thats wrong.
The last thing was about my McAfee that is changing things in registry. So i did what they ask remove McAfee completely, reinstall pc, reinstall L2 but ofc i still lag like everyone else.
Im getting so tired of getting the blame to the customers pc's and programs, while tonz of ppl are lagging.
I have to agree with Aconyte. I have a ticket open with NCSoft support for a while now. I did regular pingplotter traces, and THERE IS NO PACKET LOSS at the hops I can see in my traces which respond to ping requests, which is basically everything up to the data centre where the servers are located. Also, in a recent response from a GM they admitted that the Aion beta caused severe congestion on their network. I quote:
"We were experiencing some heavy network traffic and saturation during the last CBT event for Aion. As a result, there were issues of really slow download speeds and lag spikes on the game servers themselves. As far as we're aware, the issues that were present on our end have since been resolved. At the time, though, these issues were affecting game servers for our other games as well (including Lineage II)."
Funny thing is, though, that even during the Aion beta, many players could play completely without lag and that even now, after the beta is over, many still DO have lag. Whatever it is, it a.) is nothing anywhere close to the players' computers which the players could fix themselves and b.) it does not affect everybody. So I guess it is a router/switch/whatever which not everybody uses, maybe their data centre is connected to the internet via several providers or via several connections, and only one is affected.
Duno seems to me a bit convenient that is not a server problem but almost every1 elses problem with their ISP, particularly with all the dcing and server down and extra maintenance time.
Last one i got was dcing in the midle of aplying a but, no lag, no error, no gameguard just u have been dced from the server randomly.
Atm i cant even sign up to territorial wars as a clan.
I don't know Comcast, but if it is a big ISP giving bandwidth to other providers (outside US) might explain the geographical spreading of the problem.
No, actually I'm a network engineer for a living. I do not appreciate the personal attacks when there was no call for it, and I didn't even reply to your post in the first place.
I did traceroute a good number of server IP's, there was NO packet loss anywhere.
Anywhere that you can see, at least. Your later comment suggests that you do understand that the problem lies beyond the last router that responds to ICMP though.
A friend from Greece sent me his PingPlotter diagrams, guess what, he was connecting to Phoenix through completely different ISP's (local and global) and there was no packet loss anywhere either.
A clannie from New Zealand can't play at all, guess we all are using the same router huh??
Well it's fairly likely that all, or almost all connections to Phoenix do go through the same last few couple of routers before hitting the server. I assume NC has multiple redundant paths upstream of their servers (most likely 2). One of these is the issue. However, these are quite likely beyond the point at which previous routers are dropping all ICMP packets, so you can't see this via a traceroute.
The only thing we have in common is the LAST MILE at NCsoft's end, and it CANNOT be tracerouted. Understand?
Yes, perfectly. In fact that is exactly what I just said - the last mile at NCSoft's end (which is probably still not directly under NCSoft's control) is most likely to blame. But not the server itself. My original post was only saying that the SERVER was not having an issue (like some other people had suggested). I wasn't suggesting that there was no problem somewhere in that end of the network though.
And whatever is the cause of the problem, it's obviously acting very selectively, i.e. some players have lag while some others don't.
Which again suggests it's not a server issue. Again, my original post was just in response to the misconception that 'Phoenix' has gone to hell. I was merely stating that no, the server itself was not responsible. I was NOT suggesting that noone was having problems, but you seemed to have misinterpreted.
I was also NOT suggesting that NC can't do anything about it - they can put pressure on their bandwidth provider to fix it. But it's not under their direct control. Given that people aren't reporting packet loss before the point where ICMP packets are dropped it seems likely that there may be a malfunctioning router close to or within the actual data centre. So NC should definitely be able to get some leverage on this with whoever they rent the server farm bandwidth from.
* * *
PS. As an aside, I was playing the Aion CB all last weekend and yeah, people were complaining there too. But again I was unaffected. It's definitely something going a bit wrong somewhere in the upstream to that particular data centre (same location as Phoenix).
Here's an interesting test: those of you getting bad lag on Phoenix, how it is if you try and play on Sayha or another West Coast server? If you still get lag there, then it must be a widespread problem with a particular network (that your ISP happens to connect through/peer with). If it's lag-free, then that'd indicate it's just the Virginia/DC data centre's issue alone. Doesn't help your situation but it does narrow the culprit down a bit.
Yah, the poster above has a good point. If you have lag spikes rather than constant lag, tracerts/pings won't show you the problem if you just do a couple here and there. You need to run them for an extended period of time.
PCCW is notoriously crap by the way, not surprised they have a dodgy router in there...
My original post was only saying that the SERVER was not having an issue (like some other people had suggested). I wasn't suggesting that there was no problem somewhere in that end of the network though.
Well I was just angered with the fact that a few people repetedly posted useless messages like "I don't lag therefore there is no lag at all and the server is fine" as if they checked the servers' functionality with their own hands.
those of you getting bad lag on Phoenix, how it is if you try and play on Sayha or another West Coast server?
Yesterday I logged on Bartz and did not find it laggy (as much as I could tell while killing keltirs around DE village).
I was also NOT suggesting that NC can't do anything about it - they can put pressure on their bandwidth provider to fix it. But it's not under their direct control.
A few years ago there was a similar problem (massive packet loss) that occured at llnw.net (LimeLight Networks) that provided bandwidth for East Coast servers. From my point of view, it looked like the "last mile problem" (since it was NCsoft's ISP).
Guess what, NCsoft's "tech support" responded they could not do anything about it and denied their responsibility for the issue.
But I'd like to emphasize that I was able to detect where the packet loss occured that time and report it. This time, everything looks fine, including llnw.net.
I am not sure if Phoenix is still hosted at llnw.net though...
I also think this is why technical support is missing this completely, the default settings on ping plotter is 15 seconds interval, which for anyone who ran this program for them did so with the default setting and resulted in them not observing a single lag spike unless they happened to be on the lags peak amplitude intervals.
I think you underestimate the users' intelligence. :p
For example, I've always had it set to 1 second/ 200 samples.
You might overestimate the support team's competence though...

Well yep looks like a east coast data centre issue then.

Yep and you know what, THAT time affected me (L2 was basically unplayable). I remember that well. This time tho I'm lucky for some reason. But I imagine the basic tech support people can't do much about their ISP directly, it probably only got resolved until someone higher up finally got angry at them :P

I have huge lag spikes on Devianne and Phoenix.
No problem on Bartz, Sayha, Aria, Teon, Franz, Luna.
East Coast Server is the problem for me, unfortunately, my toon is on Devianne. <_<
Yes, perfectly. In fact that is exactly what I just said - the last mile at NCSoft's end (which is probably still not directly under NCSoft's control) is most likely to blame. But not the server itself.
Nope. You were saying:
You should be pointing the finger at your ISP and your ISP's peering and transit arrangements. Somewhere between you and Phoenix, there's a router that's dropping packets. NC can't do anything about that.
Which seems not to be the case, if there is no packet loss for the customer on the traceable part of the path to the game server. If it's untraceable - it is (or shall be) under NCsoft's responsibility, direct or indirect or whatever.
May I ask who is responsible for the overseeing of online games in america, i mean there must be a government agency or something. I am just unable to find out what it is. I cant find it on the lineage 2 site either. If someone does know could they please post. Thank you.
I am asking for some simple information and its not about that, so until you know why I want the information just mind your own :)
I very much doubt they would be able to sort out that problem, or i would ask for a decent technical team. I actually seem to be better for the past 30 mins I have been on. Also for the daddy daddy thing i'm probably a tad old to be doing that.
I tried  and just came up with the people that do other stuff, like rate the game content and stuff. Give me a suggestion of what to google please :)
I already asked that question earlier in the thread. The devs have ignored it and will continue to ignore that question. They spend time in really useless threads.. pretty frustrating.
What i find interesting is when i first logged in yesterday the game crashed my computer to the point it shut off then i logged back in and probably had glitches on my end with my wireless mouse.
I got it to work via a VPN connection. So now instead of connecting from Germany directly to the Phoenix server, I first connect to a VPN server in the US and then from there to the Phoenix server. No lag at all, absolutely perfect connection. Only problem is that it costs me extra money per month to do this >.<
But it also shows to me that it definitely is not my own ISP, since BOTH connections go from my computer to a server in the US, only from there the routes to the L2 server differ.
Just a quick note. A few people have asked me in game what VPN I am using, how to sign up there and so on. While I am happy to tell you what worked for me, I don't want to be responsible if you sign up, pay and it does not work for you for whatever reason. I also don't want to play tech support if you cannot get it working at all. Also, I just googled and chose the first search result which did not immediately look like a scam, so there may very well be a cheaper or technically better option than I chose (I just wanted to test out if there was any improvement at all regarding the lag).
If you want to try out the VPN thing, just do what I did, google for "VPN US" or something like that and choose something. It sure seems to work for me, I played the whole afternoon and evening and had no lag whatsoever so far - and when I connected the normal way, the lag was back.
i sent a petition through their suport page, got instructions, followed instructions talk to my isp and lag is reduced by 90% atm *crosses fingers*, they even wer kind enough to send me the report highlited for me to show to my isp. Very helpful indeed.
i know u guys r lagging but are u getting disconected too??
it wouldnt be that bad for me if i didnt get d/s but having to relogin every 10 minutes is ******* me off >.<
this games ******* me off in general -.-
and yup just died 2 more times as soon as i get to hunting spot trying to play a game i pay for every god **** month -.- this is the service i pay for?
Yesterday, Aria was really laggy and was getting disconnected as well. For a little while it was getting better the week before but last night seemed the worse I have had since the Gracia update. Also there are large "rifts" in certain areas on the terrain, where you fall thru, could this be part of the problem? Before Gracia never noticed them. I have seen them in Varkas and Swamp of Screams so far.
Why would we know what part of the US government does that? You might have to go "google it"... *shudders*
Sorry, didn´t realized that mr troll here is the collective mind of the L2 community...
How do you know who knows what to speak in such a global manner? If you don´t know anwser then fine, but MAYBE there is a soul in the L2 community that might know it.
We've been suffering with this lag for some weeks now on Phoenix. I'm based in the UK, and noticed that lag often starts around midday / 1pm for us (so 6/7am CST I think) and lasts for the rest of the day. This happens regularly - we haven't had a single day since this began that it hasn't happened, although the times it has occurred have varied somewhat. Spikes are severe - action totally freezes for between 1 and 5 seconds maybe every 10-15 seconds and for the rest of the time there are lots of dropped frames, for example a character appears to be standing still, but the animation for shots being used appear during combat; movement around the landscape may appear very slow, and suddenly spring forward, or a char won't respond to a click to change direction. At its most severe, lag spikes can be 20 seconds or more in length, and all action freezes, but the camera is still moveable, although it's never actually caused a disconnection.
My partner and I both play L2 on separate PC's using a shared internet connection via a wired router, and have done so for a number of years (I know, it's sad!) without any lag problems. This lag just appeared one day out of the blue (when we were in a sweet MoS party, which we had to give up on) when we had already been playing smoothly that day for some time. It did not appear to be the result of a maintenance period or update of any sort, and certainly not any kind of hardware change since we were already playing L2 at the time. Although we experience the same lag symptoms on both computers, it doesn't happen at the same time; a lag spike which might freeze one account doesn't necessarily cause the other account to freeze.
In order to totally satisfy myself it wasn't a hardware or ISP problem, I have created and played chars on Bartz, Sayha, Teon, Luna and Devianne while my partner continued to play during laggy periods on Phoenix via the same router and internet connection. Bartz, Sayha, Teon and Luna all played fine, even when my partner's account was totally frozen on Phoenix. Devianne, however, showed exactly the same kind of lag as we'd been experiencing on Phoenix. I even swapped machines (which are very different specs) and played smoothly on the non-East Coast servers on the second machine while the first showed all the same lag when it was logged into Phoenix - which I think safely rules out any out-of-date driver issues as one machine has very up-to-date drivers and the other most certainly does not!
Sorry for the long post, which probably doesn't add a great deal more to what's already been established, but I feel I needed to add another voice to the requests for assistance. I'm not looking to blame anyone or accuse NCSoft of not fulfilling their duties to their customers, and I appreciate that this fault may not even lie within NCSoft's hardware at all. I just want to be able to play and enjoy the game that I am paying for.
I 2 or 3 box on 2 different PCs behind 1 cable modem and they lag out at separate times leading me to believe its client to host connection not isp and I play unreal 3 and DDO with no issues at all. On the PC I 2 box on a netstat yields 3 connections to the NC servers per client is that normal?
Tonight on Bartz, I kept getting lag spikes. One time resulting in death (cost me over 2mil to get a brez, yay). Sometimes I would even disconnect. Please fix your servers, NCsoft.
"August 10, 2009
We will be performing network maintenance on Tuesday, August 11th beginning at 7am PDT / 9am CDT / 10am EDT / 3pm GMT. The official website, official forums, Devianne and Phoenix will be affected by this maintenance. Estimated down time is less than one hour. Regular server maintenance will follow at the normal time (10am CDT / 4pm GMT)."
Lets hope they figured it out and fixing in the morning before regular maintenance.

I dual box as well and noticed that the lag does not happen at the same time on two computers that are side by side. When one lags, the other looks fine. When the other lags, the first one looks fine. When one disconnects, the other does not. I am at devianne btw,...
If the extra Phoenix / Devianne maintenance time was supposed to address the lag issues, I can report that it's not done anything at all for me. Lag is still there as bad as ever and I've just had to give up playing because of it for the second day running.
Hey atleast their trying to find the solution and working as hard as they can (i hope)
Are they? I don't know where you read it, but I've not seen anything posted about what they are actually doing to resolve the issues. I did see one thread asking people questions, such as what server and what times they experience lag, to see if there are any sort of patterns occurring. But apart from that, I've not read anything on what they are doing behind the scenes.

Yesterday's morning (Euro time) before maintenance was one of the worst days in my entire L2 playing experience, in the terms of lag.
One of the lag spikes took more than 1 minute; usually the client would get d/ced from the server if anything like that happened, but nope that time it stayed connected, and then I suddenly found my character in the middle of freshly respawned mobs (that is, there was no communication between my client and the server for minutes, then the delayed data packets got through all at once).
After the maintenance, it got somewhat better (playable, at least), but regular few-seconds-long lag spikes are still there.
if the maintenance was not in any case related to the lag issue, then why do you point to a thread that clearly shows the date of the maintenance as a date that should, somehow, make a difference in the lag experienced by users on Devianne or Phoenix... just a question of course.

It could be an Aion-related maintenance. And it could make the lag worse, for example.
there is a lot of lagg on the sayha server also, some days are better than others but there seems to be always lagg. not only myself, but i hear it from clan members all day:eek:
It could be an Aion-related maintenance. And it could make the lag worse, for example.
yes.. but as Lyzira said, the maintenance was not related to lag issue, and therefore, I'd consider safe to assume it shouldnt affect the lag outcome either, nor for better nor worse...
then, she points to a thread that makes this date somewhat lag-issue related... which is the contradiction i at least see..
of course, it could be something like what you point out, but then my guessing would be that NCSoft is somehow aware or has an idea of what the problem is, and are trying to implement fixes without telling us.. or what would be worse, the problems experienced by users in L2 would be directly related to Aion.
summarizing.. it'd be interesting to hear from Lyzira clarify why (at least for me) if the maintenance wasnt mean to improve the lag situation, she asks if ppl are still suffering the problem. Or that, if indeed they fixed a different problem they suspected was the reason behind the lag, this doesnt seem to have improve the overall situation
The maintenance was on schedule to happen to those particular servers regardless of the lag situation. This was simply some necessary internal maintenance. We have performed similar maintenance on all of the other servers. (Last night the Sayha, Teon, and Luna had it and last week the west coast servers did). I apologize for any confusion that there may have been regarding the other thread that was created to collect information. Next time I will be sure to make two posts distinctly separate. :)
I have been reading all of these lag posts, and listening to all my clannies complain about their lag. I have no lag, but wanted to know why so many others do so I could try and help them.
I have seen alot of talk about Comcast being the problem...I have also seen many other ISPs mentioned. One thing no one has mentioned is, even if you are signed up with another ISP, it doesn't mean you aren't using the Comcast network. It sounds to me like alot of ISPs are routing through the Comcast network to get to the L2 server, and this is why there are so many non comcast members experiencing lag as well.
Keep sending your traceroutes in to NCSOFT!!! Help them to help you!!
I wanted to add that it would be particularly helpful if we could get more traceroutes from players who are within the US as we have far fewer of those.

No change here, it's still horrible.
I'm still getting regular pauses in gameplay, as if something is periodically blocking the data exchange between the server and game client.
To me, Lineage2 has turned into a turn-based game instead of real-time. :(
Today, after 5PM GMT I began to get minute-long lag spikes while standing in an empty room in empty town (Schuttgart), i.e. each time it took more than a minute to target (or untarget) some player or npc. Finally, it resulted in a disconnection...
Is it just me or is the forums running extremely slow for anyone else now too?
This is unrelated to the Phoenix / Devianne lag but yes, the boards are running a bit slowly this morning. This should clear up within the next hour or two.
those lag spikes are really anoying my game was running fine until yesterday today im back to unplayable mode, i doubt i will renew my subscription if this keeps going on
I still don't understand,.... I've never ever lagged before for that many days.... and all started during the last event. :S
Those lags spikes are horrible...I've already opened a ticket with support and send them the trace file they asked for. I am just waiting their response now.
Because Devianne is un-playable atm (at least for me), I started a new toon in Bartz and managed to get to 25. Incredible enough, no lags there....
Maybe they should just take Devianne/Phoenix server down for a day or two and put them in the same data centre as Bartz, since THAT connection to the internet seems to work just fine for everybody.

And yes, forums are slooooow right now.
Bartz is in California, Devianne and Phoenix are in Virgina. It would take awhile to make that move it not a simple process physically relocating a server.
well i don't care about the down time if the lag is fix once and for all, but again moving an entire server does not sound as simple as moving a couple of drives around, i can image that something like that will take maybe from 2-3 weeks to make it work properly
Still unplayable. Comcast in Philadelphia. I lock up for 15 seconds at a time, then smooth for 5 seconds rinse repeat. Id rather gouge my eyes out than play this crappy game after dying twice int he last 5 mins due to this crap.
I recently switched from wireless to a direct connection with an Ethernet cable to the modem. This completely fixed all the lag for me, I was getting spikes as bad as the worst ones described here, now it runs smooth as butter. How many of you that are getting lag are using wireless??

It makes no difference for me (and I bet 99% of all others who are having lag). Playing on Phoenix from Central US (Chicago). Comcast cable.
I have tried hooking directly to the modem no change in lag or disconnects. Today it has gotten worse, this keeps up no point in trying to play anymore.
Well after about 3 weeks of lag it completely cleared up for me I guess. I hope it clears up for you all as well. Doesn't seem like NCsoft was the source of the fix for me, if you are all still having problems.
do you think theres anyway i can get a free server transfer been playing on sahaya for a week now n no lag there. i just am ready to gouge my eyes out since i have no funds no real gear and shots are freaking impossible to make when u have no resources. otherwise im gonna stop playing n look for a new game. cause right now im paying 30 bucks for me and my wife to log in pop cubics and log out....
Any update on this crap? Its been 6 weeks of unplayability. Seige today was the most frustrating gaming experience of my life. 20 seconds of lock up followed by 5 seconds of fast forward, rinse repeat. Seriously its past the point of researching the problem, its into the relm of incompetence and neglect.
Aion open beta launched today in US and Euro...same time lag started..
Yup. Very noticeable lag increase and packet loss in the pingplotter traces exactly at the time the beta servers went up. And whenever the Aion servers went DOWN again, the lag disappeared. If this is a sign of what is to come when Aion finally goes live later this month ...
Hehe I knew there'd be posts like this over here...
The Aion servers are so drastically overwhelmed that they are completely unplayable. Since they are in the same data centre as the east coast L2 servers (including Pheonix) I suspected L2 would be being affected as well.
NC needs to look at their server hosting situation. Unlike L2 where they've split the servers up between west and east coast, ALL the Aion servers are in a single place (east coast, same location as Phoenix and the other east coast L2 servers). They bought 6 Aion servers up earlier today for OB and they IMMEDIATELY got filled. They're all full. They obviously had a few spare servers sitting around though because now I see there's 11 Aion servers available ... the 5 new ones are mostly low population but filling quick.
And this is just beta. At retail release I reckon they might need 15-20 Aion servers. Maybe more? Aion is looking like it's going to be 10x as popular as L2 ever was, so I hope NC knows what they are getting themselves into, with regard to server capacity. I think Aion will surpass their expectations on player numbers, at least initially. So they better have plans in place to cope with the load, or they will lose a lot of subscribers early on.
But this business of a) putting ALL the Aion servers into a single place (which is risky from a network engineering standpoint); and b) sharing the bandwidth with L2 already hosted there, is stupid. Paying customers for L2 shouldn't be impacted by issues caused by other games.
As it stands now, whacking all the Aion servers on the east coast has resulted in both Aion and L2 being unplayable for me at this time. I have 2 accounts in each. You hear that NC? that's 4 accounts, over 2 games, that I pay for that are unusable right now. ><

I believe it to be the auto programs people are running illegally that is creating the lag. NC can't do anything cause if they do these cheaters will quit and that would create a financial crises.

Game is completely unplayable for me, since yesterday second siege time, on phoenix... It continue now also, unable to even move for 30+ seconds each 5-10 seconds... great
Massive lag again began today during sieges at phoenix and is continuing now. GG ncsoft.
i guess its natural ppl would use any means possible to get the attackers to lag during sieges, and get an advantage by doing so... these could vary from simply logging in loads of toons inside the castle, to rumours of using 'other tools' to generate lag...

I'm NOT from US or Canada but THIS LAG IS REALLY OUTRAGEOUS, TERRIBLE and UNPLAYABLE NOW!
Did a file check and EVEN open up my pc to clean it and reassemble the parts and yet it lag so darn bad! Trust me Lyzira (whatever yr job functions are), when SO MANY players write in and complain, problem do NOT come from our side but yours! In my 4yrs+ playing L2, this has got to be one of the top 3 lags in my experience.
Pity those that has THIS bad lag (every 3 sec lags 20 secs) and continues to play and ending up dead.....my condolences......I log out after i tried on some toons and realised lag is still on (even had 1 toon in Gludio lagging bad).
Oh yes....this BAD LAG started from nearing towards the end of second castle siege ....Phoenix server! It's been more than 12 hrs now and i can't believe it hasn't been fixed YET..........sigh. I log in and test every few hrs and I ACTUALLY initially thought it was my ISP or PC that gives me the lag...how foolish of me lol.
They haven't been able to resolve the lag issue that affects quite a lot of players on Devianne and Phoenix for 9 weeks now, don't expect they'll resolve this lag issue that affects more people any faster...
Phoneix, midwest US (minnesota). Bad, bad lag, since last night right after seige, logged in this morning still bad lag, and I have tried a few times since, it is unplayable. Fix pls.
I have had the lag on Devianne until today. I wfound this fix from a while ago, and decided to try. I don't know what it does, but I did it, then a lease renew, and zero lag!

Completely unplayable for me today. Was fine-ish until last night, even the first siege was fine, but today I log on and horrible, insane, soul-sucking lag. It took me 30 seconds just to open the dialogue of our clan hall manager o.O
It boggles the mind how a company which demands MONEY from the players to play the game can let such horribly bad lag exist on their servers.
(keep in mind that I only could play the last few weeks because I was using a US VPN connection to get around the lag which I have on the direct route from my German ISP to Phoenix, and that lag is also still there since about two months)
Phoenix is totally unplayable! This is the first time I've ever had lag issues.. Just Fix the lag.. Almost everyone is lagging so don't lay the blame on our ISP's just fix your end please
Conspiracy theory, straight from the Aion board :) (do not know if this is true or not, but would be kinda funny if it was) I spoke with AT&T and AT&T (It took me 3 hrs on the phone with AT&T) has ADMITTED to throttling/blocking AION/NC soft due to "over use of bandwidth yesterday" I was on the phone with them all night. AT&T, level 3, and other BB providers have done the same
I dont think the problem is specifically NC Soft's servers. The problem is that there is so much traffic that there is a Internet traffic jam in Baltimore at Level3 Communications.
Now, you would think that NC soft would get their providers up to speed and ready for today and maybe they did. Maybe something is out at Level 3 but it hasnt been fixed. Who knows.
Run tracert and see if you dont get anything after Baltimore.
Me and the wife had no lag here, MTS ISP in manitoba, canada. but sure enough, as soon as she got maybe 20 minutes in on her +50% runes (which dont even appear to be working) she can no longer connect at all.
